A PLACE OF UNIQUE CULTUREBosnia and Herzegovinas capital, Sarajevo, is the country's largest city, as well as the countrysadministrative, economic, cultural, scientific and sports center. Situated in the area called

Sarajevo valley, the town is surrounded by Oylmpic mountains - Jahorina, Bjelanica, Igman,Treskavica and Trebevi. River Miljacka flows through the city. The area has been inhabitedsince ancient times, and the Illyrians, Romans and the Slavs have all left their traces. For several

hundred years, the borders of two great empires, the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian, which

represented the two superpowers of the world of that time - East and West - met in Bosnia and

Herzegovina. This made the country and its capital a crossroads for different worldsa placewhere Europe and the Orient met in the heart of the Balkans. Sarajevo is a place where, during

a 10 minute walk you can see places of worship for the worlds most widespread monotheisticreligions: there are Orthodox and Catholic churches, synagogues and mosques. All of these

traditions have given Sarajevo a specific aroma and a particular cultural mix. If you add the

heritage from the socialist period, the resilient spirit which emerged during the siege, as well as

Sarajevos modern and vivacious scene, you get a fascinating spiritual tapestry. Sarajevosvalley, which first appears as a small and narrow space, actually serves as a vast platform

where different expressions of traditional culture find their place, along with everything that is

seen as modern, progressive and alternative. Just like bridges, Sarajevo is destined to connect

different forms of spirituality, to make new, unique one.

    SARAJEVO, JUNE 28TH 1914.

Two bullets which were fired in a Sarajevo on a sunny June morning in 1914 set in motiona series of events that shaped the world we live in today.

On June 28th 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand - heir to the throne of the Austro-

Hungarian Empire, and his wife Sophie, who were in the Sarajevo on an official visit were

shot dead by Gavrilo Princip, one of a group of six assassins. The couple was returning

from an official visit to the City Hall when the assassin, 19-year-old Gavrilo Princip whowasburning with the fire of Slavic nationalism, changed the course of history. Many

historians agree that this wasnt the direct cause of the World War I, but that it was aspark that set a series of events into motion which then lead to its outbreak - World War.

The conspirators, all of whom were arrested and tried, were buried at St. Markscemetery in Koevo, a Sarajevo neighborhood, where a chapel for St.Vitus Day was

erected in their house. The archduke was killed in front of the building which now housesa museum covering the history of Sarajevo during the period of Austro-Hungarian rule.

    AIESEC BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

AIESEC in Bosnia and Herzegovina exists since 1953, which makes us one of the oldestAIESEC countries in the world. As part of former Yugoslavia, Local Committee Sarajevo

was the first one to be established in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo was the first to

be established in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since then, thousands of Bosnian-

Herzegovinian students were AIESEC members. One of the things we are most proud

of is the story of AIESEC in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war from 1992 to 1995.

AIESEC managed to survive, working under conditions no man could work. AIESEC

Bosnia and Herzegovina gained member status as independent

    country in 1993.

In the beginning of 2000. AIESEC Sarajevo gained a full-member status and later on, in

2006. so did AIESEC in Mostar. In 2011. initiatives in Zenica and Banja Luka were

created. Zenica and Banja Luka gained statuses of Official Extensions in 2012. Local

committees in Tuzla and Bijeljina are in the process of being formed. So today, AIESECin Bosnia and Herzegovina works in 6 major cities.
