DESCRIPTION

In 2009 HP invented the concept of Converged Infrastructure. Since then Converged Infrastructure has become embedded in all HP enterprise offerings and it has changed how our customers do business. In 2013 we are experiencing a dramatic increase in demand for Converged Systems that take Converged Infrastructure to the next level. These are products that use Converged Infrastructure to combine servers, storage networking and software so companies can deploy faster, achieve more, and solve unique problems. In April HP announced the formation of the new Converged Systems Business Unit, a significant investment in development of products for virtualization, private cloud, big data, analytics, end user computing, next generation management and other areas. In three years, HP has built tremendous success, experience and market momentum with our Converged Systems offerings like CloudSystem and SAP HANA appliance. The new Converged Systems Business Unit will build on that experience and drive the Convergence revolution for the next decade. In this presentation by Tom Joyce, SVP and GM of HP Converged Systems, you will be introduced to the new organization, present some of the current products, and talk about future directions for converged management of the IT infrastructure and CloudSystem.

Every 7-10 years, technology delivery undergoes a tectonic shift; one that opens up new business and access models. A shift that changes the way technology is consumed and the value that it can bring. A change in what is possible. A removal of inhibitors that unleash the power of innovation. Today, mobility, social, big data, and the advent of cloud computing are representative of such shifts offering a new means for IT to help organizations accelerate progress towards solving their most pressing challenges (including speeding innovation, enhancing agility, improving financial management). These shifts can unleash the power of IT to not only support but help shape the business. Mainframe era brought IBM direct attach and ESCON followed by EMC Symmetrix, IBM DS, and Hitachi Client/Server brought 2-node architectures from DEC, Data General, HP, and others to meet revolution created from attach of Microsoft The Internet, Mobile, Social, etc. are all being driven by virtualized server environments but most of the storage array architectures remain built for the mainframe or client/server era and fail to meet the business needs required to be competitive in this new era

It will be a hybrid world

Build Cloud services

Presenter
Presentation Notes
We at HP believe that it’s going to be a hybrid world – a journey to where enterprises leverage the best of private cloud, managed cloud, public cloud – as well as traditional IT. HP recently conducted a study: 75% of IT executives plan to pursue a HYBRID DELIVERY MODEL. And 72% said that PORTABILITY OF WORKLOADS between cloud models are important to their cloud implementations And finally, 65% are concerned with VENDOR LOCK-IN. Why do we believe, and clearly most IT executives believe, a hybrid model is the best for way to go? Because a hybrid approach provides the means to address the IT service delivery challenges facing IT organizations today in the most efficient and cost effective way. This means taking advantage of the capabilities (SLAs….availability, security, performance, compliance, cost) offered across private cloud, managed cloud, public cloud as well as traditional IT. It means looking at the portfolio of applications in your organization, segmenting them according to their respective SLA requirements, and then aligning the applications to the appropriate deployment model. And thus creating the most optimal use of internal and external resources. In this new hybrid world, the role of the CIO and IT organizations expands from the traditional builder of services to a build AND broker; creating a seamless experience for end-users independent of service source.

Presentation Notes
The HP Converged Cloud Architecture is designed to be open at every layer of a cloud solution regardless of the delivery model chosen or if a hybrid delivery model is required. When we introduced the HP Converged Cloud vision a year ago we talked about the need for a “Infrastructure as a Service” controller to provide a bridge between cloud delivery models so that it was easier to transition from the management of physical and virtualized services to true cloud delivery models. The primary concept was the customer need for a standards based cloud service definition that would allow developers to more easily create cloud services and then manage them across their natural lifecycle from development, deployment and updates or upgrades regardless of the cloud platform. We made a strategic decision to use OpenStack as an important foundational component of the HP cloud architecture. OpenStack provides the cloud run-time environment to support portability of services and a common extension or plug-in model for HP and any vendor to add value to OpenStack. The main components of this approach Portal: A common cloud consumption experience across delivery models or cloud platforms HP Cloud Management, Security and Developer tools: An integrated and modern application lifecycle management for cloud based application development Cloud OS: A single, common, standard-based architecture with a natural extension model that can support all delivery models and offerings OpenStack: HP believes the OpenStack is the most mature and most open choice for delivering on customer driven cloud use cases Enterprise grade HP OpenStack distribution with Cloud OS What we have also seen is that while OpenStack is a great cloud run-time environment it does not have all the enterprise requirements our customers and partners expect or have the many integrations and content required to implement for the average developer or company. This is why HP has delivered on the original vision of using OpenStack and extended it in standard ways to provide an enterprise grade HP OpenStack distribution that is being used by our product groups to delivery solutions now as part of what we refer to as HP Cloud OS. Delivering Cloud OS To deliver Cloud OS we curate the HP OpenStack distribution using the HP Public Cloud. This is how we know it’s enterprise ready because we run on it first in beta for the HP Public Cloud and then when it moves to GA we can use that validated image as the basis for our internal HP cloud OS that can be embedded in any HP cloud solution. Building, operating and managing cloud services with native support for modern application lifecycle requirements The converged cloud architecture also provides support leveraging the best of breed tools from HP for security, application management, operations and information management as well as being open to let a customer choose to use their solutions of choice. This focus on driving support for developer agility and operational efficiency by design is an important benefit for enterprise who do not want to be forced to adopt cloud environment specific tools. Consuming Cloud Services – common experience with HP Self-service Portal As part of the Converged cloud architecture we also designed for the self-service requirements of the developer and business. While this seems simple many times it’s this last mile of solution delivery or access where many enterprises lose out of being able to move faster and increase efficiencies. We provide turn-key solutions for deploying a full self-service solution to support real world use cases like the dev/test value chain, provisions approved enterprise solutions on demand or providing customer and partner facing solutions to purchase, manage and upgrade applications and services. In addition, brand business applications can also access and leverage any layer of the Converged Cloud Architecture to support solutions built by a developer, enterprise or partner.

Presentation Notes
CloudSystem is the industry’s most complete, integrated, open solution for customers looking to Build & Operate cloud services. Based on market leading HP Converged Infrastructure and automation, management and security software, CloudSystem supports all cloud service models (infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, software as a service) and deployment models (private, virtual private, public). CloudSystem is open and supports heterogeneous environments (multiple operating systems, multiple hypervisors, multi-vendor infrastructure) giving clients choice and avoiding vendor lock in….and enabling the leverage of existing investments and minimizing risk. CloudSystem reduces the complexity of getting started since it’s delivered as a complete, integrated solution. It allows customers to provision complex services in just minutes, from infrastructure to application. And provides complete lifecycle management; from provisioning to monitoring to retirement. All this lets you reduce total cost of ownership up to 56% by using system resources more efficiently and by automating time consuming manual tasks. HP is leading the industry with our unique support for out-of-box cloud bursting, a feature of HP CloudSystem that enables enterprises to broker service delivery across multiple clouds from a single, integrated point of control. With CloudSystem bursting, businesses can more easily, safely, and cost effectively supplement local resources with resources provided by other clouds to meet extra capacity demands, to extend geographic reach, or to leverage specialized infrastructure service offerings. Bursting support is available today for HP Cloud Services (OpenStack based), Savvis, Amazon/EC2, and CloudSystem to CloudSystem.

Another market leading feature of our flagship CloudSystem offering is Cloud Maps. Cloud Maps are pre-defined service profiles or templates that accelerate the process of building a cloud service catalog and accelerate the provisioning of the application, middleware, database and infrastructure associated with the service; saving hundreds of hours on service creation and deployment. It often takes less than an hour from the time you obtain a Cloud Map until the application is available for consumption by users. And over and above the time savings, HP Cloud Maps: Enable repeatable, proven deployments that lower risk and assure optimized performance and service levels. Working with application/software partners, Cloud Maps eliminate design and ongoing application maintenance errors, giving clients proven cloud service designs right out of the box. Offer functionality not available previously, for example customers can now check for compliance and deploy patches. Using Cloud Maps, customers can save up to 200 staff-hours per application in design, development, and deployment and can choose from our rich catalog of business applications. Cloud is a complex area that we’ve greatly simplified with Cloud Maps. HP Cloud Maps automate the provisioning and maintenance of physical and virtual infrastructure, operating systems, and applications -- enabling greater flexibility, compliance, and reliability for our clients.

Presentation Notes
With the ‘out of the box’ cloud bursting, customers who wish to use an external burst service can simply select that bursting service from the infrastructure provisioning portal in CloudSystem. The Matrix Operating Environment will automatically provision the service to the bursting partner in the same way as it provisions local resources. It’s that simple. Able to reach out to a SP to grab resources with Matrix, Enterprise and SP Very flexible Entire service can be deployed at SP Partial service can be deployed at SP (eg DB local, web at SP) Expand a private service to SP for extra capacity - Why do this Extra capacity when CloudSystem private resources have been fully used – auto burst in this case Locality to customer The bursting services will be offered by a network of certified bursting partners as part of the CloudAgile program. Savvis is the first partner we are working with and they will be delivering these services by the end of 2011. Other partners will come on board in 2012 We’ve been showing a demo to customers and it really impresses them. They want to learn more about CloudSystem immediately and set up a evaluation or PoC. They understand that the OOTB/simple burst will come later this year but they are so impressed that they don’t mind and want to go ahead now and add burst later.

Presentation Notes
HP’s cloud leadership is the result of a long, deliberate and pragmatic journey. While others have been talking about the promise of cloud, we have been executing on the vision. Our value proposition encompasses HP innovation, vast partner ecosystem, and end-to-end solution offerings. Whether you’re in enterprise IT or a service provider environment, you can bet on HP. We’re the one team with the products, ecosystem, and solutions to make customers and the cloud industry thrive. Today we have scores of customers across web, search, service providers, and social media that have implemented production clouds based on HP Converged Infrastructure and automation, management and security software. We power: 8 out of 10 of the world’s most trafficked web sites 4 out of 5 of the world’s largest search engines 4 of the 5 leaders in Gartner’s Magic Quandrant for Web Hosting and Cloud Infrastructure as a Services. The 3 most popular social media properties in the U.S. As well as the spectrum of private and public clouds around the world. Fortescue Metal Fortescue Metals was formed in East Perth, Western Australia, in 2003, and has since established itself as one of the world’s largest producers and sea-borne traders of iron ore. It has constructed ports and heavy-haul rail lines as a part of its logistics infrastructure. CHALLENGE: The company’s legacy, piecemeal IT infrastructure was inefficient and lacked the flexibility needed for rapid business growth. Also, the equipment demanded a significant administrative workload, preventing IT staff from responding proactively and innovatively to business needs. WHY HP: They turned to HP because they were able to quickly implement HP CloudSystem Matrix, creating an agile infrastructure easily maintained and managed remotely by HP, that allowed their IT staff to focus on the needs of our employees and customers, as well as to drive innovation RESULT: As a result, they now provision servers 98% faster with HP CloudSystem Matrix, provide geography-independent resilience with HP PODs, and are able to predict IT costs more easily with utility consumption model Turkcell Turkcell is listed on the NYSE and ISE with a market cap of $10B, with 63M subscribers in 9 countries, and the leading operator in 5 countries. Turkcell is the 3rd largest mobile operator in EMEA (in terms of subscribers). CHALLENGE: Turkcell was looking into entering a new market (ICT) faster and their current infrastructure wouldn’t support the aggressive timeline required to deliver services faster WHY HP: Turkcell is working with HP on a complete business transformation from developing a private cloud environment to a complete hybrid cloud environment powered by HP CloudSystem delivering IaaS, PaaS and SaaS, enabling new revenue streams from cloud services that are flexible to deliver these services tailored for each customer on demand. RESULT: As a result, they have more operating cost predictability, low capital investment and minimal risk in new technology adoption (no quants at the moment)
