Löyly is an urban retreat inspired by the sauna culture of Scandinavia. Our facilities are minimalist, peaceful and warm communal settings for you to gather, restore and relax. Through traditional sauna, Swedish massage and holistic skin care, we support everyday health and well being.

About the OwnerJessica Kelso

Löyly was established in 2006 by Jessica Kelso in Portland, Oregon. It started simply enough with Kelso’s personal love for Scandinavian style saunas. She had found respite in them while traveling through Europe and wondered to herself “Why can’t I have this all the time?”. Sauna culture is about community, health and relaxation—every day—so she set out to create a space that would be accessible without losing the beauty and quality a good sauna offers. Kelso hopes that Löyly’s translation of sauna lifestyle across continental and cultural divides encourages closeness or “hygge”, a Danish word which means warm feelings between people. Her personal passion has now become a restorative Portland pastime.

Löyly, better living through radiance.

In Finland there are over three million saunas, averaging one sauna per household. Ubiquitous and utilitarian, they gather people together across generations, genders and geographies to sit, splash, laugh and heal together. This ancient tradition is not about self-indulgence, but rather about self-care. The Finns believe regular sauna is essential, a place where everyone is equal and you “leave your worries with your shoes at the door”.

We named our sauna after the Finnish word for the great wafts of steam that are made when someone ladles water on the hot rocks of the kiuas (a special stove used to warm up the sauna). Much like the singular experience of the sauna the word is quite unique. Löyly is derived from an ancient word meaning “spirit, breath or soul”. It is this notion, of the wonderful ethereal spirit of the sauna, that we aim to promote. That which lifts us!

“Sauna facilities are communal urban retreats, where you come together with friends and strangers to relax and have a good time. It is unlike anything else that we do, totally different than a solitary spa experience or going out to a bar. In Finland, people behave in sauna as they do in church, with a reverent yet cheerful attitude. It feels special, yet everyday. There is a sense of goodwill and lack of hierarchy that generates the kind of human connection that so many of our social experiences are lacking.”

—Jessica Kelso, Founder / Owner, Löyly

Inspired by a recent “sauna tour” of Finland, Kelso has paired up again with architect Brendon Farrell, whose simple yet stunning style has created a dramatic space with reserved Scandinavian design. Löyly Northeast keeps all of the special touches clients have come to love at the flagship SE location, but matches the demand for additional massage facilities, sauna space and reservation time.

In March 2015, Löyly expands to a new facility in Portland’s burgeoning Northeast quadrant. The new space is significantly larger than Löyly SE in order to accommodate five rooms for massage, a cooling room and two large cedar saunas.

“When the steam hits my skin, it’s like embracing an old friend.”

—Open Places, April 2011

“This, to me, is exactly how a spa should be: not a one-percenter temple to overwrought luxury where people, staff and clients alike, are forbidden to speak above a reverential whisper, but—yes!—a clean and friendly and therapeutic place where things smell nice.”

—Travel Crush, April 2014

“The Löyly experience is truly something special in Portland. I suppose reaching your Löyly is like reaching dharma”

—The Anti-tourist, May 2008

“It was perhaps only a matter of time before the D.I.Y. ethos touched the spa world, and it has done so with style in Portland, Ore., with Löyly, a handsome, minimalist sauna in the southeast quadrant of the city.”
