ASK THE RABBIQuestion: Can I feed my dog meat and milk that were cooked together?

Answer: The Torah forbids us from cooking meat and milk together. There is also a biblical prohibition from benefiting from these mixtures. There is a rabbinic prohibition (i.e. still not allowed, but not as severe a prohibition) for us to eat cold meat and milk that were not cooked together, though this rabbinic prohibition does not apply to our pets. All of this means that it is not permissible to feed a dog something that contains meat and milk cooked together. In this case, you would benefit from the mixture because your dog would benefit- so this would violate the Torah prohibition. If you wanted to feed your dog a mixture of milk and meat that was not cooked together (i.e. two things that were cooked separately and were both cold) this would be permitted. Some say that the rabbinic prohibition of mixing cold milk and meat together also does not always apply to babies and toddlers, who are under the age of chinuch (education), which is generally agreed to be 3 years old, minimally. This is because doctors often recommend that children must drink milk, and doing so is crucial for their health and is for their benefit. According to this approach, if one needs to they can give a baby/toddler milk while he eats a hamburger (because milk is beneficial for his health and they were not cooked together) but one cannot melt cheese on a hamburger (this would constitute cooking). You can learn more about the reasoning for feeding uncooked milk and meat to a child in this teshuvah by Rabbi Linzer: www.tinyurl.com/meatandmilk Bottom Line - One cannot feed meat and milk that were cooked together to one’s dog, as this would be a violation of the biblical prohibition to benefit from mixtures of meat and milk that were cooked together.
