That Awkward Moment (2014) Director: Tom Gormican Writer: Tom Gormican Three best friends find themselves where we've all been - at that confusing moment in every dating relationship when you have to decide "So...where is this going?" Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis, Jessica Lucas 5. I have chosen romantic comedy as my chosen genre because this is my favourite genre of films. The reason I like this genre of films is because they are aimed at my gender and age. Stuart Halls reception theory is that your age and gender will decide what your opinion on things will be, whether they are preference (meaning you like that genre of film) Negotiable (meaning you can give or take this genre) and oppositional (meaning you dont like that genre). The thing that attracts me to these kinds of films is because I like the fairy tale ending that they all have. I like the cheesiness and how unrealistically in love they make people out to be. But because they are comedies the storylines aren't straightforward and boring. People might say they are all the same but I think the comedy element is what keeps them different. Although they are over the top they are still realistic. Whereas an action or Sci Fi film I sit watching thinking this is would never happen. I like Rom Coms because they are easy to watch and you dont have to think about it too much. One more thing I like about Rom Coms is that they usually use actors/actresses that I like e.g.. Mila Kunis and Zac Efron 6. Intertextuality Intertextuality is when a film uses a factor of another film. Whether this is a quote, character, setting or scene. Just something that has happened in another media text. For example in the film That Awkward Moment a man is eating ice cream because he is heartbroken and his friends make fun of him and call him Bridget Jones. This is because in the Bridget Jones films shes known for crying over a tub of ice-cream about her break up. 7. Star Theory Star theory is based on the fact that the audience would go to watch a film because of the cast. I admit I would go and watch a film based on some of the cast. For example I went to watch Wolf of Wall Street mainly because Leonardo Dicaprio. The people who cast films choose well known stars because films will make more money. Richard Dyer was the theorist that came up with star theory. They use certain actors to attract the audience they want. For example if producers wanted an older audience they would use stars like Pierce Brosnan and Judy Dench. But if they were aiming for a younger audience they would chose stars like Anna Kendrick and Chris Hemsworth. 8. Frameworks of interpretation: The Other Woman- Codes and conventions of this movie are love, romance, comedy, city locations, sex, contempary pop music. For example the whole film is about 3 women who are all getting played off by the same man. At the beginning it looks as though the film is going to be about love, when really its about friendship. The soundtrack to this film is The Sun Is Rising by Britt Nicole. This is a convention of a rom com as it is an up lifting song that makes the audience feel happy at the end of the film. In the film Friends with Benefits they talk about how rom coms always have a love song at the end of film to make you feel happy and to make you feel as though youve enjoyed the film. 9. Media Literacy How do I find out about the films I watch? The main way I find out about the films I watch would be through social media. Social media is a good way to find out about new films because the trailers get advertised on there. Fan pages are created so you can follow and read updates on the film. Social media can get the trailer or film poster watched or looked at by millions of people in a few seconds. The cast and crew of films can write posts about the films and their fans will see it instantly. Cinema trailers and TV commercials are another good way of finding out about films if they are aired at the right times. Cinema trailers will be aired usually before the film of the same genre is about to be shown. For example they wouldnt show a trailer for a children's film before they show a film rated 18. Finally, magazine reviews are also a way of finding out about new films. 10. Active Audience An active audience is where fans of the film write about it on social media. Whether this is on Facebook, twitter or blogs. Some films even gain Fandoms. These are the groups of people who love the film, they are the hard-core fans of the film. These fans go to extreme lengths to meet the cast and know everything about the film. They use social media to organise meet ups and conventions.
