BETH JACOB CONGREGATION

120 Years 120 Years

From the Auction Chairs

Fellow Beth Jacobians,

The year was 1893. The first Ferris wheel was built, Oakland’s population crossed 50,000, and the city began enforcing speed limits for horse-drawn carriages. Meanwhile, a group of 40 Jewish families came together to found Beth Jacob, a new orthodox shul at the corner of Ninth and Castro streets in downtown Oakland. For over 120 years, Beth Jacob has been a pillar of the East Bay Jewish community, and it continues to grow and thrive. Tonight, we gather to celebrate both the history and future of this great congregation—not with speeches, but rather in the grand Oakland tradition of eating, drinking, and socializing with friends. Also, by giving Tzedakah (mostly for the opportunity to eat, drink, and socialize some more).

Beth Jacob’s strength has always been its community. And while it may take a village to raise a child, it certainly takes a small army to put on the Annual Dinner. We therefore would like thank, glorify, and praise these great volunteers (in no particular order):

RABBI ALBERT AND RABBI FOX: Our spiritual and organizational leaders, for their counsel, problem-solving, and willingness to field our questions and kvetching. They handled everything from kashrut to furniture.

THE VARIOUS AND EVER-ROTATING BJC OFFICE STAFF: Elaine was our one constant in the BJC office throughout the entire planning process; she and the other staff provided necessary behind-the-scenes office support, and for that we remain grateful.

RUDI BROOKS: For keeping our second home neat, tidy, and prepared.

DEBORAH SOSEBEE AND MELONY BRAVMANN: Our auction co-chairs, who compiled all the auction offerings, put together this booklet, handled all bid sheets, and coordinated all the items and events.

ADREA GERBER AND HARRIET SCHIFFER SCOTT: For managing all the member donations to the auction—basically for working with, nagging, and providing creative ideas to the entire congregation.

TOVA BERNSTEIN: For handling all business solicitations.

KEN BRAVMANN: For greatly improving the software behind how auction donations were processed. While this work was behind the scenes, it greatly improved the lives of our auction and donations chairs.

OAKLAND KOSHER FOODS: For preparing and serving all the delicious food we consume tonight.

SEMIFREDDIS: For donating the bread that accompanies dinner.

JENNIFER BLUMENFELD: Our webmaster and crack IT expert, for making the dinner webpage both attractive and functional.

BONNIE CARASSO AND ELKE BARTER: For their vision and graphic design expertise, including the dinner logo, branding, and invitations.

MIRIAM BARRERE, KIRSTEN BARRERE, AND PAM MILLER: Our decorations co-chairs, who will transform our BJC microcosm into an epic Oaklandish macrocosm.

REBECCA ASTRACHAN: For coordinating all the RSVP’s, reaching out to some of our members to encourage attendance, and for setting up the bar so that Ben and his team could keep the beverages flowing all night.

JACK ZIMMERMAN: For being the master of odd jobs, from stuffing and mailing invitations to running numerous errands.

BEN MARCUS AND HIS BARTENDING TEAM: For running the bar and ensuring that the entire congregation will be well-watered.

JOEL ACKERMAN AND STEPHANIE MAMANE: For providing Ben with the tools (OK, the drinks) to keep the bar fully stocked.

MARSHALL SCHWARTZ: For arranging the license to allow us to serve the delicious libations, legally.

ZEV RUBENSTEIN: For emceeing the evening and keeping things lively.

DAVID GLUCK: Our audio department, for putting together a musical tour of Oakland.

DAN LEVIN: Our AV-department, for ensuring that you can hear both Zev and MC Hammer.

TEEN VOLUNTEERS: Our younger congregants who will make sure you get in the door, know where to sit, and get fed.

RAY EDELMAN: For soliciting underwriters.

UNDERWRITERS: For providing the generous funds that make this evening possible.

For anyone that we forgot to mention (or who generously volunteered after this booklet went to print), we are truly sorry. We thank you for all your hard work in making this evening’s dinner a success! To all of them, and to all of you, we say: thank you!

What do you say to a man (or woman) upon reaching 120? HAVE A GREAT DAY!

What do you say to BJC on the occasion of its 120th birthday? HERE’S TO 120 MORE WONDERFUL AND GLORIOUS YEARS!

Can’t touch this,

JESSICA BLAZER AND MICHAEL GERBER

The Complicated Stuff

Bid Sheet Tutorial

Welcome to the Bid Sheet Tutorial. In this lesson, you will learn how to score the event of your dreams, maximize your potential, and bring about world peace. If you have questions, contact Deborah Sosebee or Melony Bravmann.

First, READ THE EVENT DESCRIPTION so you know how many slots are available. The slots are awarded to the highest bidders downward, and, if there are multiple bids at the same price, to the first bidders signed up at that price. In the example below—an event that can accommodate eight people—the two slots at the highest bid ($70) got in, as did the four slots at the middle bid ($60), and then only the first two at the cheapest bid ($50) (see highlighted names).

The Foxes, seeing that the Friedmans and Sosebees were taking up four slots, realized that they had to increase their bid to at least $60 in order to be in the top eight. (This action forced a Bravmann and a Blazer out of the running.)

The Zaks, feeling extremely lucky, just waited it out—this time their gamble paid off. Of note, the Friedmans DEFINITELY wanted this dinner, so they bid $70 before anyone else bid $60 to ensure they would have a slot. Also of note, there may end up being multiple bid sheets if there are not enough columns to accommodate increasing prices.

You Can’t Buy These in Stores!!

This year, three fantastic prizes are being sold in a Basket Auction. So, you may be wondering:

What is a Basket Auction, and how does it work?

In our Basket Auction, there will be several items on a table, each with a basket in front of it. You get to choose which item(s) you want to win by buying tickets and placing them in the basket(s) of your choosing. You may buy as many tickets as you want and place as many tickets in whichever baskets you want. When the auction closes, the baskets will be taken away, and one lucky winner’s name is drawn from each basket. Obviously, placing more tickets into any one or more baskets increases your chances of winning. Where can tickets be purchased? Tickets for the Basket Auction will be sold at the dinner when you enter the upstairs social hall. Tickets cost $50 each, or 3 tickets for $100. You may purchase as many tickets as you like; the cost for the tickets will be included in your bill. The items available in the Basket Auction are:

1) MULTIPLIER BASKET: Winner from this basket receives one ticket in each of the following three baskets

2) OGLE GOOGLE: You and three very lucky guests will spend a half day at Google headquarters in Mountain View. The excursion will include a guided tour in the computer science museum, covering the first computing machines up to current smart phones, with detailed explanations and the history and biography of the people behind it. You will also “fly” in a simulator to Jerusalem (no passports needed and you can bring a note for the Kotel), and be plied with an endless supply of snacks, drinks and coffee. If you’re lucky, this tour will coincide with the Google science fair—an internationally recognized competition for young (age 13 - 18) scientists. The science fair is the final competition in which visitors get to meet a panel of the 20 runners-up, discuss their projects and see demonstrations. This is a great opportunity to educate your kids about computer science and have fun.

3) HAJDU PETITE SIRAH: One Double Magnum of 2013 Hajdu Petite Sirah, Mendocino County, Eaglepoint Ranch. This inky purple wine is made from grapes sourced from one of California’s most famous vineyards. Look for notes of blueberries, chocolate, tar and scorched earth. One of only three bottles produced.

4) PIXAR POSTER: Pixar is at it again! This summer they will be releasing Inside Out (try to wrap your head around that!) and one lucky winner will go home tonight with a poster for that film. But not just any poster—a two-sided poster signed by director Pete Docter!

High bidder and seven adult companions will spend a day in Portland, Oregon with Yitz & Hilda Applbaum for a tour of House Spirits. Founded in 2004 in Oregon, House Spirits Distillery is a leader of America’s craft distilling movement. Its award-winning products are batch-distilled and are inspired by a passion for quality spirits and delicious cocktails. Its flavorful, innovative spirits include Aviation American Gin® (one of the fastest growing gin companies in the US), Westward Oregon Straight Malt WhiskeyTM (a favorite of many whiskey connoisseurs, including Aimee Fisher), Krogstad Festlig AquavitTM, Volstead VodkaTM, and a line of limited release small-batch spirits. This package will take place on a date mutually convenient to the buyer and the Applbaums, and includes same-day, round-trip airfare, distillery tour, sushi dinner, and maybe even a bottle or two of House Spirits products. Start thinking now about whom you’ll “spirit away.” Put together a consortium!

Minimum bid: $2,500.

Paddle Items to Support Beth Jacob

Stimulus Package

Imagine this: You can’t attend the event or find items you want to buy, but you want to support BJC. Or this: The evening is winding down and you were outbid on a couple of items. So maybe, just maybe, you’ve got a few extra dollars to spend.

For $180: HELP US BID A FOND FAREWELL AND GIVE A HUGE THANK YOU TO RABBI AKIVA, CHANI, D-ZEV, MATANYA AND NEW BABY NAIMAN as they “transition” from our community back to Israel. For $180 you will contribute to a delicious, kosher, nutritious, organic, locally-sourced, hand-made (okay, maybe we’re getting carried away here) upstairs Kiddush in their honor in true BJC style.

For $54: HELP US MAINTAIN THE SAFETY OF OUR CONGREGATION ON SHABBAT MORNINGS. We have stepped up security at BJC in light of recent events in Oakland and abroad. For $54 you can help offset the increased cost of providing excellent coverage during Shabbat davening and Kiddushes.

For $18: PROMOTE LEARNING AMONGST OUR TEENS (AND ADULTS). We are looking to stock our library with sefarim (books) specifically geared towards our teens for them to distribute and use at NCSY events, during Shavuot all-night learning, and when they have a few minutes to fill and are looking for something to read. And if we raise enough money, we’ll be able to augment our adult offerings as well!!

Thanks to several generous anonymous donors, we are able to offer a stimulus package again this year.

Under this plan, everything you spend between $100 and $200 will be covered.

• If you spend up to $100 at the auction, your bill will reflect that amount.

• If you spend $100—$199, your bill will be $100.

• If you spend $200 or more your bill will be reduced by $100.

This plan is OPTIONAL. You are welcome to avail yourself of this stimulus package. You are also welcome to pay your bill in full and leave the stimulus money in the shul’s coffers.

Special Raffle: Win Dinner for Six at Covenant Winery

This year we are raffling one of our most exclusive events—DINNER FOR SIX AT THE NEW COVENANT WINERY IN BERKELEY.

Jeff and Jodie Morgan will prepare a four-course dairy/pescetarian feast taken straight from their newest cookbook The Covenant Kitchen, Food and Wine for the New Jewish Table (Schocken/OU Press), to be released this March, 2015, while co-host Jonathan Hajdu will ensure that the meal is expertly paired with wines from Covenant. Covenant Winery is the only functioning urban kosher winery in America since Prohibition. And while they don’t really believe that there is such a thing as the “greatest” kosher wine, it’s nice to know that renowned wine critic Robert Parker has called Covenant “the greatest kosher wine on Planet Earth.” Covenant wines—even at $100/bottle—sell out quickly and are enjoyed throughout the world: from the USA to Paris and London, to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Canada, Mexico, South America and Australia. Additionally, there will be three signed copies of their new cookbook available to share amongst the attendees.

Tickets are $100 and only 50 tickets will be sold. Unlike the lottery, buying multiple tickets actually increases your odds of winning! The tickets are being sold on a first come/first served basis (at www.bjcdinner.org), so if there are any left, that’s where you’ll find them.

The winner will be drawn at the Beth Jacob Annual Dinner on Feb 8th. You do not have to be present to win.

Please note: Raffle tickets are not tax deductible.
