No matter how long you’ve been a football fan, the beautiful game never ceases to amaze. The finale of last season’s Premier League was astonishing. With the game between Man City and QPR entering injury time, City needed to score two to wrest the title from the other side of Manchester. With the United game over, Ferguson and his players milled about anxiously waiting for news from the Etihad Stadium. When it came it wasn’t good – and scarcely believable. First Dzeko and then Aguero had done it and Man City had won the Premier League for the first time.

It capped off a glorious campaign which offered untold betting opportunities. The good news is that it’s now even easier to bet on football with Betfair. You can place multiples wherever you are with Betfair Mobile and use Betfair’s Cash Out function to lock in a profit when you choose. Plus, the Betfair Exchange offers you great value on every single match.

To help you make the most from your bets we’ve compiled a fantastic guide to the upcoming campaign. Inside you’ll find full fixtures for the Premier League, the Championship, Bundesliga 1 and the Spanish Primera Division. We’ve packed your handbook full of essential stats, recommended bets from our experts (including Harry Redknapp), and tips for making the most from Betfair’s unique betting environment. Don't settle for less.

Enjoy and, whoever you support, I hope you have a successful season on and off the pitch.

The Premier League is never straightforward with plenty of twists

and turns. And never more so than last season when Man Utd threw it away when the title was in the bag. That means there’s plenty of extra value to be had in their price this year.

At some point in the season to come, just like last year, they’ll go top of the league and that should make them favourites. At that point you can trade your 3.5 or let it ride.

I’m not writing off Man City. They’ve got massive firepower upfront and are big, strong and fast. They’re rightful favourites

but 2.26 is a skinny price. With Roberto di Matteo in

charge I think Chelsea will compete but they need to improve, and I don’t see them winning the title. The difference between the Blues and my old club Spurs isn’t as big as their odds suggest – 6.4 and 36.0 respectively – and I think it will be a good battle for the top-three between those two. I can see Liverpool running Arsenal close for a top-five spot.

My advice – back United, then sit back and wait for the drama to unfold. And, if you’re a clever punter, trade that price all the way through the season.

KEY FIXTURES

You might think these two fixtures look competitive, but you’d be surprised. Chelsea have only won three of their last 20 visits to Arsenal and, incredibly, Spurs haven’t beaten United in the league in their last 22 attempts home or away! Home prices will be very short so look for added value with Betfair Multiples.

Norwich, Villa and Swansea could get sucked in, but we think these are the three likely to make the drop. Wigan are the best bet – it’s going to be tough for them to pull off a third consecutive escape act.

QPR received nine red cards last season, the joint-most by a team in a single Premier League campaign (with Sunderland 2009/10). Djibril Cissé didn’t help – he played in eight games last season: he was sent off in two and scored in the other six. Fulham were the only team not to get a red card all season.

HIGHLIGHt

Newcastle were last season’s surprise package, finishing a creditable fifth. Alan Pardew takes most of the credit, with new signings Demba Ba and Papiss Cissé scoring 29 goals between them. They did lose home (3-1) and away (2-0) to champions Man City though, so this is the perfect chance to prove last season wasn’t just a flash in the pan.

Trading places

The beauty of Betfair is the ability to back and lay selections, effectively taking opposing sides of a market to lock in a profit. Say you backed Liverpool pre-season for €100 at odds of 40.0, only to see them get off to a flyer. Their odds have now dropped down to 9.0, but they’ve got three tricky away fixtures in the space of a few weeks, at Man Utd, Arsenal and Man City. Trading out would guarantee you a €345 profit for a stress-free season.

Man City’s total of 93 goals last season was the third highest in Premier League history, behind Chelsea 2009-10 (103) and Man Utd 1999-2000 (97). Man Utd scored 89 goals, the highest tally of any club not to have won the Premier League.

The average number of goals per game in the Premier League last season. See page 21 for tips on betting on the popular Over/Under 2.5 Goals market on Betfair.

Key fixture

The Manchester derby this time last year was critical to Man City getting back in the race. This time Man Utd play at home and it should be another crunch encounter. In 15 visits to Old Trafford in the Premier League, Man City have only won two, but they saved their best for last season when they humiliated United 6-1. Expect this one to be much more competitive.

Dennis IrwinThe Premier League is getting more entertaining every year, but the ex-United and Republic of Ireland legend can’t see past the two Manchester teams for the title

ExpErt opInIon

Who do you think will battle it out for top spot?I can't see past Manchester United and Manchester City again. Both teams will improve this summer with more signings. Chelsea have spent a few quid and after finishing outside the top four last season I expect them to do better. Arsenal will be up there as well, but it will be interesting to see how Spurs and Liverpool get on with new managers, and whether Newcastle are as good as last year.

Do you think another team can surprise us?I always think Everton will finish well if they get off to a good start, but they always start slowly!

You’ll know better than anyone how much last season will have hurt Sir Alex Ferguson…They only lost on goal difference, and that was despite injuries and people saying they weren’t at their best. They will be involved again

because the manager has been there so many times. Shinji Kagawa is a creative player who can play just off the front man or wide and the young players, like Danny Welbeck, are more experienced.

What do Chelsea and Arsenal need to do to close the gap?Chelsea have a few new players already and a manager who did well at the back end of last season. As a club they will want to get closer to winning the league, although they have lost Didier Drogba who has been so influential for them. Fernando Torres has come into form and their new signings will freshen things up. Arsenal did tremendously well to finish third last season despite the upheaval of

Page 15: Betfair Irish European football league guide 2012

Rooney or Torres for top goalscorer?

www.gambleaware.co.uk18+

15

Paul Lambert has a tough job. He did well at Norwich but Aston Villa is a different kind of pressure

players coming and going last summer and in January. They’ll be better prepared this season but will need to improve defensively.

Who will finish top goalscorer?Wayne Rooney will be up there. Torres will play more games and he has his confidence back. It will be interesting to see where Robin van Persie ends up and whether the new Arsenal boys Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud impress.

What do you think of the general standard of players coming to the Premier League this season? The standard always rises. You can’t stand still or you'll get left behind. The top teams only need marginal additions to freshen things up, but there’s no doubt the league will be stronger. You only have to look at how many goals were scored between the top clubs in key games last season to see that it keeps getting better.

There have been a lot of managerial changes this summer, who’s caught your eye?Aston Villa have had a couple of quiet seasons and Paul Lambert has a tough job. He did well at Norwich but Villa is a different

kind of pressure.

How would you assess the teams likely to be involved at the bottom?Wigan finished last season well,

so it’ll be interesting to see if they can continue that form. Villa will improve under Lambert while it’s harder for the teams in their second season in the top flight. Swansea and Norwich impressed last year but it’s tougher second time around, and they both have new managers.I think the three teams coming up are good enough to stay up. West Ham will be hard to beat while Reading and Southampton like to play football, like Swansea did last season. You can always bank on one surprise team getting caught up in trouble as well.

Page 16: Betfair Irish European football league guide 2012

People say that the first meaningful Premier

League table is the one at the end of the year. In 2008 Rafael Benitez infamously predicted that if Liverpool were top at Christmas they would have an 80 per cent possibility of ending the season as champions. They were and they didn’t. Other teams have topped the table at Christmas and fallen away when the going gets tough and squads get exposed.

There is one team however that seems to get stronger as

the season progresses. It's fair to say that Man Utd have completely dominated the Premier League, winning 12 of the 20 titles. Seven of these were won when another team topped the table at Christmas.

If you really want to use the Christmas table as a prescient guide, look to the bottom of the league. Of the 20 teams that have propped up the league while tucking into their Christmas dinner, only one – West Brom in 2004/05 – has gone on to escape relegation.

CashOut

Instead of placing a bet and waiting to see if it wins or

loses, Betfair gives you the option to trade out of your position when you want. You can do this manually or with Betfair's unique one-click Cash Out feature. Cash

Out automatically works out your optimal profit, or limits your liability, in any given situation. All you have to do is click, confirm the amount offered and your bet will be settled (pending any standard In-Play delay).

Say that you’ve backed Fulham for

€100 to beat Norwich at odds of 1.9. Your potential profit (before commission) is €90. Fulham take the lead and their odds drop. By laying Fulham at 1.4 you can now guard against the possibility of Norwich coming back into the game. By using Cash Out you can guarantee a profit (before commission) of nearly €36 with a single click.

Because Cash Out saves you time, it can make you money when every second counts. When Dzeko equalised for Man

City in injury time in the last game of last season, Man Utd were still 1.09 to win the league. If you’d clicked Cash Out, Aguero’s incredible last gasp winner wouldn’t have left your bet in tatters.

Cash Out is available in any market where this yellow icon is displayed

Page 20: Betfair Irish European football league guide 2012

The Correct Score market is a great place to profit

from football, and you don’t have to predict the exact result to win. Here’s a good example. After doing your research on a game you’ve identified that the home side very seldom fails to score. You also think the game will be tight – both sides are frequently involved in low scoring encounters.

Assuming Team A are going to score at least once, then by backing 1-0, 2-0 and 1-1 prior to kick off you can cover all the results under 2.5 goals. You can then use the Over/Under 2.5 Goals market for insurance.

The facts

1 Team A have only failed to score once at home this season.

2 You don’t expect early goals but you think they’ll come as

Team A frequently score at home.

3 You can’t decide an outcome on the Match Odds market

(home/away/draw).

After 20 minutes, if the game is still 0-0, you can take out cheap insurance by laying Under 2.5 Goals – you’re looking to get at least your initial €34.50 outlay back here.

For an outlay of €34.50 you'll win €53 if any of the three scores come in.

www.gambleaware.co.uk18+

20

Correct your betsAre you using the Correct Score market to maximise your chance of a profit? We show you how…

Page 21: Betfair Irish European football league guide 2012

Once these four bets are matched, all you need is

for Team A to score and you are in a no-lose position. You don’t really want the away team to score, but that’s why 1-1 is covered. 1-1 should then decline in price and the price for Over 2.5 Goals will also come down, so you should still be able to get out at close to break even. If

it stays 0-0 until the end you'd lose all your bets, so you should consider taking a hit and cutting your losses using Cash Out if it’s still goalless after 65 minutes. You’ll make a loss but if you start taking these trading lines it’s important to protect your bank and have a strategy that takes all factors, including the worst case scenario, into account.

In this market you’re betting there are either two

goals or less, or three goals or more in a game. It's popular because there are lots of stats that give you a good idea as to whether a game is going to be tight or not. Some managers are happy to concede as long as they're scoring freely at the other end. Remember Blackpool in the Premier League? In contrast, teams like Greece have become

famous for a safety-first approach, with plenty of 0-0, 1-0 and 1-1 scorelines.

It's also a great market for In-Play betting. Certain teams tend to score early so you can back the overs and trade out when they score. If the early goal doesn’t go in you can trade out for a small hit, or even back your initial judgement if the game is looking open and back the overs for more at a better price.

25The Championship is one of the most competitive leagues

in the world, with no strong favourite and near enough 20 of the 24 clubs given a chance by the Betfair market. As you’d expect, the three relegated Premier League teams are among the contenders, but a mixture of big clubs, those beaten in the play-offs and rising Championship forces will be going all out to grab their shot at the big time.

Leicester have thrown plenty of money at the playing and coaching staff in recent years and with manager Nigel Pearson in his second season, a more settled Foxes outfit could make a genuine bid for promotion.

Bouncing back to the Premier League straight away is never easy – just ask Birmingham or Blackpool – and a swift return for Blackburn, Bolton or Wolves is not assured. Bolton look best placed, with Wolves an

unknown quantity following the appointment of Ståle Solbakken as manager. Blackburn under Steve Kean remain unconvincing. The ever-entertaining Blackpool and Ian Holloway are also a great bet to be challenging for the top.

If you're looking for teams with a bigger price, fans of Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton will be dreaming of the Premier League again after coming up from League One. Southampton proved last season that successive promotions can be achieved, and in this most open of leagues it’s not so outlandish to think one or both of them could go close.

Who says Barcelona are the best in Europe?

For several years now, the Primera Division has been a straight

battle between two clubs. Real Madrid and Barcelona seem to stretch ever further away from the rest with every passing season, playing almost in a parallel competition of their own. That makes picking the title winner quite easy – it will be one of these two!

This year, the third placed team will finish far behind the big two, perhaps even further than in previous campaigns. Of

this year’s candidates for the third spot, Malaga will continue to grow and I think they will offer a genuine challenge to Valencia. However, the team that catches my eye is Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic Bilbao.

Last season the Argentinian coach did great things, but a lack of experience undid them. With a better understanding of the players and the game in La Liga, I believe Bielsa has reached a point where he can lead his team back to the glory of previous eras.

The Bundesliga 1 season starts soon and, as the new brand Ambassador of Betfair, I’m looking forward to many exciting games. As a customer you can be confident that

you’re getting better prices, and along with that I hope we will also get to see the very best football. I’m very curious this season to see whether one of the other teams can keep up with Bayern and Dortmund. Maybe even my Leverkusen team, who knows…

Enjoy the new Bundesliga season!

Rudi Voeller is the sporting director at Leverkusen and a Betfair Ambassador. We asked him a few questions about the upcoming campaign.

What are your ambitions for the new season? Our minimum requirement is to get into the Europa League but, of course, we really want to qualify for the Champions League.

Sami Hyypia is your new coach. Why is he the right man for you? When he was a player he behaved like a coach. He’s played at

Liverpool for ten years; he’s won the UEFA Cup and the Champions League. He’s always played at the highest level and now he can bring that experience to us. He’s also got an experienced coach in Sascha Lewandowski at his side. These two complement each other so well that I am convinced we will succeed.

Is your squad complete now that Daniel Carvajal has joined? We’ve also signed Junior Fernandes from Universidad, and we expect a lot from him. Plus, we’ve decided to keep Andre Schurrle despite a very good offer from Chelsea. I think we have a strong squad now and should enjoy a very successful season.

The league’s new boys might be favourites to go down, but Fortuna Dusseldorf won the play-off against Hertha Berlin to come up and Greuther Furth beat two top-flight teams on the way to the semi-finals of the cup. Betfair Multiples let you combine selections for a bigger price. The

simplest Betfair Multiple bet is a double, where you place a bet on two selections. So if you bet €10 on two teams to win with odds of 3.0 each you will get back €90. This is because your first win paid out €20 in profit, which is added to your initial €10 stake for a €30 bet on the next match. If this bet wins you get €60 in profit plus your new €30 stake for a total return of €90. The more selections you add to your multiple bet the bigger your odds, and your potential payday.

The good news is that it’s now even easier to place Betfair Multiples. Just make your singles selections as usual and then

With four games left in last season’s Premier League, Man Utd were five points clear at the top and looking on course for their 13th title when a fairly routine home game against Everton went desperately wrong. After falling behind, United took hold of the game with an iron grip, leading 4-2 with just ten minutes left. At Old Trafford that’s about as much of a sure thing as you can find in sport, but first Jelavic (83 mins) and then Pienaar (85 mins) stunned the home crowd into silence and held on to deliver what proved to be a fatal blow to United’s title hopes.

The home side were bottom of the league and 12 points behind Villarreal, who were one spot above the relegation zone. That gap looked certain to increase after Martinuccio put Villarreal ahead in the 16th minute. It stayed 0-1 until the 85th minute when Luis Garcia snatched a late equalizer. Then, with three minutes of stoppage time played, Abraham pounced on a deflected pass and slotted home for a late, late winner. It was a defining point of the season for the two teams: Zaragoza went on to secure their Primera status while Villarreal were relegated by a single point.

Dalglish’s Liverpool weren’t having the best of seasons when they travelled to suffering QPR, but few expected anything but a red win. QPR hadn’t won a league game in two months while Liverpool were looking to improve on their dismal 7th position. A dull 0-0 game was brought to life spectacularly when Coates scored Liverpool’s first goal with an acrobatic scissor kick. It spurred Liverpool on and they seemingly put QPR to bed when Kuyt added a second in the 72nd minute. What followed was an incredible finale for the home faithful. Derry headed their first before Cisse struck in the 86th minute to level the game. Then, in injury time, Mackie found himself one-on-one with Reina. He kept his cool and slotted home to send the QPR fans wild.

Sport may be unpredictable but sometimes a result is nailed-on so hard that the odds sink as low as 1.01. This attracts two types of punter. The first are those who bet big and want an almost guaranteed return. Bet €1,000 on a 1.01 shot and you’ll win €10. The other side of this bet is to lay the heavy favourite and hope the sporting gods smile on you.

Lay a 1.01 shot with just €10 liability and you’ll stand to win €1,000 if the unexpected happens. Choose your 1.01 shot carefully and you’ll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Barcelona were clear favourites to win their second game of the season, but manager Pep Guardiola had slight cause for concern after the Txuri-urdin had stunned his team 2-1 earlier in the year. That evaporated early on when Barcelona passed their way to a 2-0 lead in just ten minutes, with first Xavi and then Fabregas scoring for the visitors. The rest of the half was all Barcelona, but in the 59th minute Sociedad got a lifeline when Agirretxe headed past Valdes. It shocked the normally unflappable Barca, and straight from the kick-off Villa played a suicidal back pass that was intercepted by Agirretxe. He chipped a shot against the bar and it was Griezmann who was first to react to force the equaliser. Barcelona reacted instantly by bringing on Messi but Sociedad held on for a vital point.
