President’s Message

Dear Beta Chi Sisters,

I sent a "get well" card to Libby Whetson, who underwent surgery and to Joanie Miles, a "thinking of you" card to Judy Fatobene, as she had another procedure done to her knee; and a "thinking of you" card to Therese Hrabowy, who has been overwhelmed with all her husband's medical problems. A "thinking of you" card was also sent to Eileen Hazel. If any sisters would like to donate cards for me to use, it would be greatly appreciated! "Get Well", "Thinking of You", and "Sympathy" cards are in great demand lately. Thank You!

Can you guess who I am? Find out at this month's dinner meet-ing!

I taught English and Spanish in 7th grade, Junior High and Senior High for 22 years in the Howland Local Schools. One of my favorite memories was taking a group of students to Europe for In-ternational Studies! I served as President for the Howland Classroom Teachers' Associa-tion, and was on the Contract Negotiations Team. My husband and I were married for 36 years until he passed away in 2011. I have only one son, but now I have a baby granddaughter! Both my son and daughter-in-law work for the United Nations as Human Rights' Lawyers. They are presently sta-tioned in Jerusalem! A long ways to go to see my grandbaby!! When I was younger, I loved to dance! I also loved traveling! Now, I enjoy reading and volunteering at the St. Vin-cent & DePaul Dining Hall (soup kitchen) and as a Friend of the Sutliff Museum in the War-ren Public Library.

Our March meeting was held at Fowler UMC. President Juanita Barber welcomed guests Katie Hank, Linda Cowin, and Roberta Johnson amidst a backdrop of cheerful St. Patrick’s Day decorations. Deborah Davis gave an Irish blessing before we enjoyed the church ladies’ classic chicken pot pie dinner.

Members wanting to order a year pin should notify Linda Falatic. Linda Ross read bios of four applicants to Beta Chi. All were accepted by secret ballot. Linda Cowin, Judy Gaughan, Katie Hank, and Joan Miles will be initiated during the April 6th meeting at Brookfield UMC.

President Barber shared information from Pat Cermak regarding DKG’s international non-profit status, the NE Regional Conference, the Voice, and the ADS Convention later this month. Members seeking DKG information may need their ID number as the user name (which is the member number) located on the membership card. Also, a default password is needed which Juanita Barber can supply. The Presidents’ Report, the Gold Key Application, and Necrology Report have been submitted. President Barber thanked many members for work well done. Deborah Davis won the 50/50 raffle.

Sharon Jarvis introduced the dynamic speaker, Deryck Toles, a native of Warren, who is CEO of “Inspiring Minds.” Mr. Toles highlighted IM’s successes as the program seeks to “engage, inspire and empower youth to reach their full potential through education and exposure to life-changing experiences.” A donation of $424.00 was collected and given to support “Inspiring Minds.”
