WHY DO GRADUATES OFTEN STRUGGLE INITIALLY?The major complaint from employers regarding recent graduates is their inability to put the theory they have learned in the classroom into practice. This concern is unsurprising when you consider that most schools don´t offer their Interns the opportunity to practice the techniques they have stud-ied before they graduate. You cannot learn your profession in a classroom, just as you cannot mas-ter tennis by reading a book..

WHAT IS AEL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?We believe that no other company offers significantly better Internships abroad experience than BESTEP. Such a program is very difficult to execute, requiring a new level of integration between hosting companies, career services, and BESTEP´s interns. BESTEP has developed this program by carefully refining the action learning component based on the feedback of both participating companies and Interns. Our curriculum is divided into three distinct stages:

ACTION PROJECTParticipate in a real world project for a major company. With a small team of mates and a mentor (typically a management consultant or senior industry executive), students will cooperate with others company colleagues to develop a project in differ-ent areas such as MKT, IT, finance, HHRR... Over 2-6 months each intern will work with the company to develop an idea and business case. No other Internships com-pany is able to offer such high-level experience access to international companies in Asia.

EXPERIENCEAs the economy becomes more globalized, the competi-tion for good job opportunities continues to increase expo-nentially. Students no longer have to simply be more quali-fied to those next to them, but than countless others all around the world. Through an Internship experience, by working with industry experts in different sectors, the practical reality of execut-ing the classroom theory is brought to life. Meaningful dialogues and supervision with active business leaders help students appreciate how real-world executives make decisions in a fast-moving, competitive environment with imperfect information

LEARNStudents start by learning theory and business funda-mentals in the classroom. BESTEP CHINAChina, the world’s oldest surviving nation, with over 4000 years old is also the most populous country in the world with more than 1.4 billion people, meaning that roughly one-fifth of the world´s population is Chinese. In 2010, after more than thirty years of dramatic growth, China surpassed Japan to become the world´s second largest economy after US. China´s side in land and population, its rapid economic growth and its sharply increasing military expenditures are dramatically changing the strategic map of the world. Our BESTEP programs in China are located in different cities along this magnifi-cent country. These are some of them;

BEIJINGIt is the country´s political, cultural, and educational center. Beijing is also home to the headquarters for most of China´s largest state-owned companies. It is one of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China and it has been the political center for many centuries. Nowadays, the city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, and huge stone walls and gates and its art treasures and universities have made it a center of culture and art in China.

SHANGHAIShanghai is the largest city by population in China with over 23 million. It is a global city, with influ-ence in commerce, culture, finance, media, fashion, technology, and transport. It is a major financial and commercial city and the busiest container port in the world. In the last two decades Shanghai has been one of the fastest developing megalopolis, currently becoming one of the most important financial markets in the world.

QINGDAOIt’s a major city of China, with a population of over 9 million. An important region in Eastern China, Shandong Province has seen substantial change in its economic landscape in recent years. Much of this development has been concentrated in Qingdao. Due to the historic German colonial times, the unique combination of German and Chinese influence in the city, combined with German demo-graphic roots and a large Korean expatriate population, gives Qingdao a distinct atmosphere.


BESTEP MALAYSIAMalaysia is a bubbling, bustling melting pot of races and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmo-ny, turning into a mosaic of cultures giving it an unique taste; towering skyscrap-ers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five-star hotels sit several meters away from ancient reefs. Malaysia´s economy is a newly industrialized market economy. It has had one of the best economic records in Asia, with GDP growing an average 6.5 per cent annually from the past fifty years, currently rep-resenting the 3rd largest economy in ASIA.

KUALA LUMPURKuala Lumpur is the federal capital and most populous city in Malaysia. It is among the fastest grow-ing metropolitan regions in Asia, in terms of population and economy. The service sector comprising finance, insurance, real estate, business services, wholesale and retail trade, transport, storage and communication and utilities form the largest component of employment in this region.

Kuala Lumpur is the sixth most visited city in the world, with 8.94 million tourist arrivals in 2008. Tour-ism here is driven by the city’s cultural diversity, relatively low costs and wide gastronomic and shop-ping variety.

LANGKAWIThe Island, recently given a World Geopark status by UNESCO, is officially known as Langkawi, the Jewel of Kedah. Langkwai is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea. Pulau Langkawi, noted for its legends and beautiful views, is the most developed in the group. It has amazing beach-es, abundant marine life and offers an idyllic retreat from the urban jungle.

PENANGA fascinating fusion of the East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently.

PROJECT MANAGEMENTProject management is the discipline of planning, organizing, securing, managing, leading, and controlling resources to achieve specific goals. The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals and objectives while honoring the preconceived constraints. Primary constraints are scope, time, quality and budget. The secondary challenge is to optimize the alloca-tion of necessary inputs and integrate them to meet pre-defined objectives.Project management is something we all have to do: some of us professionally, some of us for per-sonal reasons. The Project Management course will teach you how to face the challenges of being responsible for the time, resources and financial management of projects. In the relatively short span of ten weeks, you will learn the fundamentals of project types, structures, and supervision, leader-ship and evaluation tools needed in the context of a project.

More importantly, the course helps you to become your own master, and adopt methods, instruments and style that fit the needs of your own project best. In a practical, active atmosphere, you will learn tools and tricks that top managers use and learn them from real-life case studies and discuss your own projects with co-learners and the trainer.

• Finance principles

The first module serves the dual purpose of reviewing fundamental finance principles and mechanics introduced in the heretofore Finance Courses and by introducing new developments, new valuation techniques including equity cash flows, real option pricing, and cross-border valuation.

• Liability and Risk Management

Risk management is the process of measuring risk and then developing and implementing strategies to manage (“hedge”) that risk. Financial risk management, typically, is focused on the impact on corporate value due to adverse changes in commodity prices, interest rates, foreign exchange rates and stock prices (market risk). This module explores the objectives and methods of active risk management pro-grams.

• Project Finance

Finally, this section will examine structuring and financing problems and opportunities associated with substantial free-standing projects. Throughout the course between a firm’s financial decisions and its business strategies will be considered.

CORPORATE FINANCE Corporate finance is the area of finance dealing with monetary decisions that business enterprises make and the tools and analysis used to make these decisions. The primary goal of corporate fi-nance is to maximize shareholder value. Although it is in principle different from managerial finance which studies the financial decisions of all firms, rather than corporations alone, the main concepts in the study of corporate finance are applicable to the financial problems of all kinds of firmsThis course is meant to develop the theoretical and practical tools essential to the execution of a Corporate Financial Officer’s (CFO’s) job. As a consequence, the course is appropriate for students who intend to pursue a career in finance (e.g., in the finance area of a corporation, or servicing cor-porate clients in a financial institution, or as an analyst or portfolio manager), or to launch a senior general management career from a finance specialization. The section also serves students who want to develop analytical skills for evaluating strategic and investment decisions.

The course’s theme is how CFOs can create value through integrated financial, strategic, and oper-ating decisions, especially after the 2008 financial meltdown. Students gain the knowledge and skills so critical for the CFO by evaluating investment decisions; proposing, assessing, and implement-ing financial decisions; and evaluating and managing risk. The course introduces advanced valua-tion techniques and stresses a rigorous understanding of what creates value and why. Although the course is focused on the responsibilities of the CFO and involves advanced analytic techniques, it adopts a general management perspective on the corporate finance function.


MARKETING IN CHINA: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIESThe question of how to market and sell to companies based in China is one that is debated endlessly by foreign companies seeking to profit from the huge potential of the country.

Views expressed by businesspeople claiming to know the secret of success in China vary wildly, from those (generally newcomers) who say that marketing and selling in China is ‘just like home’ through to those (usually those with at least a couple of years’ experience in China) who exaggerate the unique nature of Chinese business and Chinese people to such an extent that selling in China sounds like an impossibility. The reality is that these two positions are both equally crass and incor-rect – there is no reason why a Western company with a flexible, patient and ‘listening’ approach to marketing and sales should not succeed in the Chinese market.

The importance of “guanxi” in doing business in China

Chinese guanxi is critical to how Chinese companies do business, although the whole concept can be alien to many foreigners. Guanxi refers to one’s network of personal relationships, which can be drawn on in a business context. Although such networking and relationship-building is clearly impor-tant to the sales process in China, there is a tendency among some commentators to overemphasize its importance when trying to penetrate the Chinese market. This course inculcates the student on how to effectively design and monitor marketing plans for the company; How to effectively develop the market through a thorough understanding of buyer’s priori-ties and behavior and to create better value and benefits for ever more discerning customers.

Chinese Mandarin is the most frequently spoken lan-guage in the world with approximately 1500 million speakers and is hence one of the key languages in the world culturally and in business. Chinese can open doors to employment in a variety of occupations such as in virtually any business related to finance, manufacturing, export-import, international business, as well as in teaching, translation, interpreting, and the growing travel industry.

HANYU SHUIPING KAOSHI (HSK) CERTIFICATE 汉语水平考试The HSK Certificate is the People's Republic of China's only standardized test of Standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers. It translates literally to "Chinese Proficiency Test". The HSK test ap-proximates the English TOEFL, and is valid without any limitation in The People's Republic of China. The test aims to be a certificate of language proficiency for higher educational and professional purposes. Choosing the right methodology is of course critical and that can make learning the language a relative cake walk or much more difficult. TEACH ENGLISH IN CHINA

In an effort to promote internationalism, China is learning English. In the next five years, all state employees younger than 40 will be required to master at least 1,000 English phrases, and all schools will begin teaching English in kindergarten. The government also is funding extensive teacher training programs to find new models for language learning and develop new textbooks.
