Chairmans Letter

To the Players and Parents,

As I write my final piece for the 2013/14 season, two things stand out for me this

year that makes it all worthwhile.

Firstly, it is satisfying to see our facilities at Coleman Park taking shape and moving

ahead with purpose. Our partnership with the Craughwell Senior Athletic Club has

seen us complete the new dressing rooms and the ‘pitch in a field’ now looks like a proper sport’s facility.

Our new pitch construction in the adjacent field (pictured below) is well under way and we are currently

putting in the drainage system. We should see the beginnings of a fine grass pitch by the end of the

Summer and we can look forward to this time next year when the pitch will be ready for play.

Secondly, our club have never had a more successful season on the pitch with frequent trips to finals in

Eamonn Deacy Park. The U14, U15 and U17 boys all came up trumps with cup winning performances

while many of our underage teams also performed with distinction on Galway’s biggest stage. Both the

U14 and U17 girls have chances to win finals this month too and I wish them the best of luck.

Aside from the fact that we have plenty of talented players on Craughwell teams of all ages, I need to

point out that it could not happen without dedicated parents and volunteers giving up their time to our

club. We will be holding our AGM sometime in August and I am asking for help in all areas including

coaching, fundraising, facilities management and club administration. The club has now grown to a healthy

membership and it will not prosper without you, the parents, getting involved.

I would like to mention some people who have served their time well with the club over the past seasons

and are now stepping down. To Declan Craven - U16 boys, John Smalle - U12 boys and John Woods - U12

girls, thanking them for their great contribution and hoping we can replace them with equally enthusiastic

coaches. To Sandra Lawlor for her excellent work on player registration bringing us online with the Galway

FA systems.

Finally, thank you again to Mary Feeney and her team of FAS volunteers who maintain the Coleman Park

facility in beautiful condition week in, week out.

See you all next season.

Gavin has been at the top of his game for the U17 boy’s team all season. His dedication isplain to see at every training session, at every game and his attitude is always positive andenthusiastic. Never one to complain, he leads the attack, both in fighting for every ball andalso by scoring more than twenty goals this year. He will be well suited to life in the PremierLeague along with the rest of his teammates next season. Well done Gavin.

Gavin O Toole – U17 team

Andrea has been a real asset for the U16 and U17 teams this year, showing immense strengthand determination. She is a commanding central midfielder and controls this positionbeautifully. Against Salthill Devon, Andrea showed a huge drive to compete in the midfieldbattle even though the strong city side eventually won well on the day. She then played asstand-in goalkeeper against Corrib Rangers because of a leg injury and made several lastditch saves to help her team win the match.

Andrea was in outstanding form while playing for the Galway U16 Gaynor Cup team inLimerick in late June. She played in all four group matches highlighted by a fantastic matchwinning goal against Wexford. Galway eventually settled for eight place in the competitionwith Andrea featuring in all six games played. Well done Andrea!

Girls U10Our U10 girls had another very enjoyable season. Training hard every Saturday Morning from 9-10am. We played a number ofmatches in a “non competitive” league, which was great for bringing on these girls’ skills. The league was for U10 Girls, but thevast majority of our girls are really U9, so they will all be U10 again next year and their experience this year will stand them ingood stead for next season. They are a great bunch of girls to work with. Enjoy the Summer and see you all again next September!!Vinny Callaghan, Conor Waters, Marcus Doherty.

Girls U12We had an impressive 29 girls in the U12 squad this year making us the biggest squad at this age group in Co.Galway. The girlsshowed great commitment, team work and enthusiasm over a long season, starting training in late September and finishingcompetitions in early June. We entered three teams in the GFA Galway league to ensure all players got decent match playingtime. This was difficult to manage and we ended up “loaning” players between teams on some occasions to make up thenumbers, but overall it worked really well and achieved our aim of getting each player on the pitch representing the club incompetition. Thanks to the players and their parents for helping us with this and filling in for unavailable players. Our Threeteams had a great season. Our Red team finished joint third in a very competitive Premier league, with all the matches beingvery tight and very little between the top six teams, the highlight match was a thrilling six all draw with Oughterard with bothteams playing attacking open football. We had two teams in Division 2, the Green team finished in third place and the Blueteam who were undefeated finished joint first with Cregmore, but were unlucky to miss out on the title in the playoff match atTerryland . Our girls dominated the first half but couldn’t convert their chances and were caught on the break in the secondhalf and were very unlucky to miss out on the title.

Overall a great achievement by the girls to get two teams in the top three in the division. Thanks to all who helped out attraining and matches. Well done to Jane Trehy and Sarah Woods who were selected for the U12 Galway Girls team. Thanks and well done to all the girls keep playing and we look forward to seeing you in September. John Woods.

Boys U7I would like to thank all the boys in the U7 squad for their hard work and commitment in their first season. There was greatimprovement in all areas from the boys and also great entertainment and comments such as trying to explain a passingmovement and being stopped in mid sentence to be told how the tooth fairy had come the night before and they were goingto Smyths Toys after training, priceless. I must also thank all the parents for their support and a special thanks to Karl Zimmerer for his help in coaching and at thematches. Alan Whelton.

Boys U8Craughwell United U8 teams brought their successful season to a close at the Oranmore Invitational Tournament finals onSunday 25th May. All three Craughwell teams enjoyed the day with Craughwell Wanderers continuing their strong showing inthe tournament with a win and a draw. Goals from Alan Zimmerer and Shane Greensmyth on the day and solid defensivemarshalling by Jamie Collins and Rian Comer. The progression of the team was encouraging throughout the season withexcellent performances throughout from the impressive Vince Morgan, ably assisted by Jack Colohan, Rory Dillon, Jason Griffin,Adam Jordan and Colin Campbell. Craughwell Village maintained a strong finish in the tournament with impressive victorieson the Finals day. Impressive goal tally from Conor Gilligan resulted in him being top scorer for the club all season, followedclosely by Shane Murray. The Village team was served well by Dylan Moran, Roan Budge, Conor Zustak, Joe Gallagher, ConorGilligan, and Eoin Spellman. Craughwell Celtic showed continued improvement all season and were narrowly beaten on theFinals day by an unlucky last minute goal. The team was lead by impressive Cormac Regan, Cathal Plower, Cormac McFaddenwith Shane Gorman, Josh Moloney , Eoghan Tierney, Cormac Touhy and Fionn Quirke ably assisting all season long.

The management and coaching staff would like to thank all the players for their efforts and willingness to learn and progressin the game. Thanks also to the parents for their support. The future of Craughwell soccer is bright.Karl Zimmerer, Damien Gilligan, Sean Regan.

Boys U9It has been a fantastic season for the Craughwell U9 soccer team this year. I was delighted and a little nervous, taking over fromMike Lyons whom had done a lot of hard work in the coaching role before me. It's gone very quickly and my philosophy is tocome training smiling and go home happy. To do that we needed to develop the players and help them to enjoy themselves.Along with my fellow coaches Cormac O Brien and Aidan Bond we made good progress and if we continue the good workfrom this season then we will achieve good things going forward. I can only praise the attitude amongst the players this seasonand for that I say, thank you to all of them for turning up for training, come rain or shine.

There’s an old saying that “it matters not if you win or lose, but how you play the game” – and it’s an honour and a privilege tobe associated with a group of players who play the game so well. Michael Walsh.

The U9 boy’s squad getting ready before their Finals Day at the Oranmore Invitational Tournament in May.

The U9 team was asked for a 100 words on this season and Jamie Lyons was selected todo this. His own words as follows -

Soccer is my favourite sport to play. I play it with Craughwell U9 team. Our coach is MichaelWalsh. We train every Saturday in the astro pitch and this year we got to train on the grass acouple of times, because we are practicing for our quarter finals in Eamonn Deacy Park inGalway. This year we played in the Oranmore tournament and a Tournament in Kinvara whichwe played on the grass pitch. We played 2 games in Kinvara against Colga and Kinvara . Wedrew our first game against Colga and against Kinvara we won well. I played in midfield forthese games and I really enjoyed it. Jamie Lyons.

Boys U10This year our U10 boys’ squad grew yet again to become the largest squad in the club with an amazing 41 members all of who

are eager and enthusiastic and throughout the season, which extended to eight months this year, were a pleasure to work

with and coach. This year our continued focus was on developing the basic skills of the game and building confidence through

coaching of small group drills and mini games. Also this season provided the opportunity to participate in the Oranmore

Invitational Tournament which gave all the chance to try out and practice their skills in a game situation. The “step up” this year

was the move to playing matches on grass pitches which initially took a little bit of getting “to grips” with but nothing that

presented an issue to this fine group of players. With squad numbers at an all time high we were able to enter three teams in

to the tournament all of which played some fantastic soccer throughout the tournament recording many fine wins as well as

conceding to stronger teams on the day, all of which is part of the learning and experience of the game. This Tournament

kicked off in late December however got stretched out to the end of May which was a very late finish.

As with the Oranmore League the Galway FA

U10 seven a-side competition was also

delayed this year, however this kicked off in

late May with two team slots being allocated

to Craughwell. Both teams topped their

group on the play-off evening and secured

their places on the Finals Day, Both teams

qualified for the Cup competition and can

be rightly proud of being the only club in the

league that manage to do this. On the day

we narrowly conceded to stronger teams

including Knocknacarra U10s who went on

to win the competition.

Throughout the season it was great to see all

the lads getting in to it and enjoying their

sport and we look forward to the coming

2014/2015 season with the lads now moving

up to U11s and participating in Galway FA

games.

With the increased numbers this year the

demand for additional help in coaching and

on match days went up and I’d like to say a

special word of thanks to all who helped out

and on many occasions took on more than

their share including Aidan Collins, Willie

O’Connor, Frankie Stewart, Kevin Quirke,

Mark Faherty and all the others that helped

out along the way.

Squad - Conor Trehy, Gavin Kelly, Sean Joyce, Liam Mulveen, Oisin Davis, Jack Regan, Sam Finnerty, Sean Cahill, David Ruane,Alex Craven, Gearoid Meehan, Sam Maduka, Thomas Pearse, Jack Farrell, Emmet Keane, Shaun Gilligan, Liam Diviney, AaronDolan, Ross Whelton, Conor Hynes, Robert Moylen, Niall Kennedy, Luke Clarke, Oisin Bloomer, Darren Shaughnessy, Lewis Ryan,Tiernan Killeen, Mikey Murrey, Ultan Jennings, Eoin Staunton, Kieran Hanrahan, Nathan McCormack, Cathal Delahunty, AlanHiggins, Shane Morgan, James Furey, Thomas Barlow, Killian Gallagher – total squad members 38 (2012/13 : 30) (2011/12 : 23).

Team stats - Played – 58 games (last season 39) games in all competitions including challenge matches. Won – 42, Drawn – 7,Lost – 9. Surely at this stage they must be tired of soccer.

Win average is 72% (last season 51%). Better than Manchester City’s win average after winning the Premiership this year. All init has been a very busy and successful season, culminating with the recent cup finals day in Terryland. Well done to all theplayers who won the Shield competition and hard luck to the players who were narrowly defeated by Salthill Devon in thesemi final of the Cup competition. We all saw how much it means to them and it bodes well for the future of our Club. It standsto all the players and coaching staff that our Club were the only “non Galway city club” to have both squads get to the semifinals in Terryland on Sunday 15 June 2014. Mervue Utd and Salthill Devon were the only other two clubs to do this. Goalsscored – 267 in total, averaging 4.6 a game (last season 3 goals per game). 22 clean sheets were kept – well done to thedefenders (too many to name) and goalkeepers, Conor Trehy, Alan Higgins to name a few who stood between the posts. 30players got on the scoring sheet this season, again too many to individually list.

Goals of the seasonConor Hynes and Kieran Hanrahan. At the quarter final stage against Athenry, the game was locked at 3-3 with a semi finalappearance in Terryland hanging in the balance. It was all to play for when Conor Hynes ran from midfield with the ball, got tothe edge of the box and calmly struck the ball into the top left corner giving the keeper no chance. 4-3 to Craughwell. At thefinal in Terryland against Salthill Devon, having beaten Mervue in the semi, the game was even until Kieran Hanrahan hit thenet from a tight angle on the right hand touch line. A majestic strike. Kieran swears he meant it, but only he knows if it was ashot or a cross. Nevertheless it fired up the team and they won out comfortably from then on to win the competition.

The Clubs played - Maree/Oranmore, Kinvara, Mervue, Salthill Devon, Galway Hibs, Renmore, Ramblers, Knocknacarra, Colga,Athenry, Oughterard, Bearna, OLBC, Gort and Tuam.

Next SeasonNext season will be our squads first season playing competitive football. We will be asked to submit two squads and if we havethe numbers, a third squad into GFA affiliated competitions which will be a 9 a side league format, we think at this stage. Wedon’t know yet what divisions the GFA will select for us. However, we have squad of players that can compete in any GFAdivision. The Club will be looking for volunteers to help out at training and help the existing coaches during games. We canonly have 3 teams if more parents help us out. If not, we will be restricted to just 2. It is not a huge commitment but it isrewarding. It is extremely important that despite what squad and division a player is selected to play in, he gets the supportand encouragement from parents at all times. We know from the great year that we just had, all the guys want to do is playball. Well done to all the lads and many thanks to the parents for your support. I want to express kind thanks to the coachingstaff and parents who have helped us along the way. Registration for next season will be early this year (probably August) aswe need the funds to pay for our new pitch.

Boys U12This season was a fantastic season for all our U12 players. The U12B squad, after a rocky start, had a great finish to the seasonending up winning five from their last eight games to leave them mid-table. The U12A squad also had a fantastic seasonfinishing fourth in the Billy Fitzgerald U12 Premier Division beating big city clubs like Salthill and Knocknacarra along the wayas well as last year’s champions Cregmore. They also reached the semi-finals of the Connacht Cup before going down bravelyto the eventual winners Mervue. you don't do any of these things without huge committment and effort and so I would liketo thank all the lads and their parents for a great season. Girls U14The U14 girls have had a very good season in a very tight league which went down to the last game of the season withCraughwell needing to beat Athenry to force a four way league play-off. Unfortunately the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Thisteam is exceptionally talented and have only lost one league match in two seasons. They have qualified for the Division OneCup final against Athenry in Eamonn Deacy Park and hopefully will finish the season with some silverware. This dedicatedbunch of girls have trained in all types of weather conditions at Coleman Park and all of this squad have contributed to thesuccess of the season. Special mention to Aoife Raftery who was on the U14 Galway squad which won the national title recently.Declan, Lorraine and Lucy.

Girls U16/17This year we entered teams in the U16 and U17 Galway FA leagues. A lot of thegirls played in both age groups and it was a credit to them that we did so wellconsidering between the two squads we only had thirteen players. The U16 team played eight games and conceded one due to lack of players onthe day. We started off by beating Corrib Rangers 5-2, followed by Athenry 5-0and East United 2-0. The competition stepped up a gear when we played ShivenRovers, Cregmore and Salthill B drawing all three games. We then beat Oranmore3-2 before drawing 1-1 with Colga in our final match. We finished a highlycreditable joint third in the league, level with Colga and behind only the twoSalthill Devon teams. The U17 division was a tough league from the start. Withonly ten girls we battled hard against a very good Moyne Villa team that beat us4-1 on the day. Our second match was a 3-0 win against Kinvara followed by a 6-0 roasting by Salthill Devon. Although we played fantastic in the second half, Salthill had inflicted five goals on us in the firsthalf thus proving too strong for us. We then defeated Corrib Rangers 2-1 before Moyne Villa beat us 1-0 to finish the season. We finished in third place which qualifies us for the Division One Cup final against Moyne Villa in Eamonn Deacy Park onThursday 17 July at 7.30pm. All in all it was a great season with great performances from everybody and hopefully we canfinish the season with some silverware. Bill Doran

Boys U13Player of the year: vincent Boyle Most Improved Player of the year: Jason BurkeCraughwell’s U13 boys played in League Division 1. We won two, drew one and lost five to finish mid table. We were at adisadvantage early on in the season with no recognised goalkeeper and not having a full squad available for games. Thingsgot better as the season went on, when Michael Joyce went in goal alternating with Joseph Jackson. We faired better in thecup, beating Barna before narrowly losing 1-0 to Tuam in the Division 1 Cup. In the Mayor's Shield, we beat Maree/Oranmore B before losing 5-4 on pens to Knocknacarra B. The majority of our goals andassists came from Vincent Boyle, Darragh O Connor and Joseph Jackson. In Defence and midfield, the following ever presentplayers performed well; Jason Burke, Oisin Connaughton, Conor O'Neill, Ryan Cahill, Evan Kelly and Keelan Woodlock. Welldone to all the squad for not giving up when things were not going our way and for performing to the best of their ability, which are great qualities to have going forward. Boys U14Player of the year: Cormac Dooley Most Improved Player of the year: Dylan ShaughnessyU14 team had another very successful year by just missing out on the league and cup double again this season. The team wonthe Division 1 Cup in Eamonn Deacy Park with a well deserved 2-0 win over a gallant Renmore side. We were also promoted tothe Premier League next season after finishing in second place just behind Oughterard. There is a great team spirit among this group of players. The season ahead of us will be tough but this squad can match anyteam on their day. We now look forward to the new season ahead in the Premier League. Boys U15Player of the year: Jack LallyMost Improved Player of the year: Oisin O’BrienIn a glorious season for the club, our U15s played their part by winning the Division 1 Cup Final 2-1 against St Bernards inEamonn Deacy Park. Consistently playing excellent passing football we grew in confidence leading to our cup success. In theleague we finished mid table but this was a very tight division. Considering we beat eventual league winners St.Bernards inboth the league and cup final showed the quality of our team. In the Cup Final, goals from Cillian Dolan and Ronan Nevingrabbed the glory but everyone in the panel played his part in a thrilling season. Roll on 2014-2015!

Boys U16Player of the year: Dylan PrendergastMost Improved Player of the year: Andrew O’BoyleWe had a very large squad of twenty four that trained diligently all season. Unfortunately due to the small number of teams inour division we only had six competitive matches which was very frustrating for the players. This division was very even andthe lads gave a good account of themselves but unfortunately they finished the season without any silverware. They are agreat bunch with great team spirit and a genuine love of soccer which was proven by their request to continue training fortwo months after their season had officially ended. Boys U17Player of the year: Shane DonnellanMost Improved Player of the year: Sean GarmanThe U17 team had a brilliant season winning the Galway FA First Division with eight wins and one draw and also winning theLeague Cup after a thrilling battle with Mervue United B in Terryland. The only competitive game lost all season was in the FAIU18 Cup away from home. In all we scored 58 goals and only conceded 14 - a brilliant reflection of the team performance froma great goalkeeper, a very strong back four, a committed, skillful and energetic midfield to brilliant strikers - Fantastic! We asked for nominations for our player of the year and in total, ten different players received votes which reflects the level ofteam performance over the season!Nigel Garman, Mark Faherty and Paul Dolan.
