YOU MAKE IT HAPPEN!Readers choose their favourites in Burnaby

The businesses listedin this special sectionhave been selected asthe best in their specificcategory by the readers

of the Burnaby NOW. We publishedballots earlier this year and offered a$1,000 shopping spree as an incentivefor residents to cast their vote for theirfavourites in over 100 different cat-egories in dining, entertainment, retailand services. The shopping spree wasprovided by Metropolis at Metrotown.Well it worked! We counted thousandsof official ballots in print and online, andtabulated winners for all categories.

While this wasn’t a scientific survey, thelevel of participation does lend cred-ibility to the outcome. Most marketresearch is based on the responses of

a much smallersegment of thepopulation.

The 2016 Best ofBurnaby winnersare most deservingof our recogni-tion as simply the“Best in Burnaby.”But don’t take ourword for it. Whynot visit each of the businesses listedin this special feature and decide foryourself. Then, next year you’ll be morequalified to cast your votes in our 20thAnnual Best of Burnaby Awards!

2016BIt just keeps winning and winning.

Hats off Day has once again captured hon-ours as the Best Annual Burnaby Festival –an award it has earned from NOW readersevery year since 2005.

The festival is held on the first Saturdayof June each year and is described as a“huge, one-day extravaganza featuringa colourful main street style paradewith real local flavour, followed by abig street party.”

The festival shuts down HastingsStreet between Boundary Roadand Gamma Avenue, and every-one in the area – merchants, community groups, neigh-bours and VIPs – turns out toenjoy a day of celebrating thecommunity.

This year’s June 4 event will

kick off with the fourth annual Family FunDash, where families lace up their shoesand dash down a three-block stretch ofHastings (from Madison to MacDonald) fora good cause. Everyone who takes part

gets an official Family Fun Dashribbon and a swag bag full ofgoodies.

And, of course, a highlight of theday will be the parade, whichkicks off at 10 a.m. and featurescreative floats and entries from

BThe sun is shining, the mercury is rising, and Cactus Club is getting ready to wel-come patrons back for patio season – withan award to its name.

Cactus Club has once again won Readers’Choice honours for Best Patio in Burnaby.

“We’re obviously very, very, very flatteredand excited,” says Christy Murphy, directorof communications for Cactus Club. “It’ssomething we really incorporate into ourwhole design.”

Murphy says the chain focuses on a phi-losophy of “indoor-outdoor living” andensures that patios are as much a part ofthe ambience as the indoor restaurants are.Fire pits and water features are a big partof their patio design to add to the charm ofthe outdoor spaces.

Even in climates where the weather is less

hospitable, the chain goes to great lengthsto make sure its patios are as weather-proof as possible – with retractable roofsand heaters as needed – so they can beenjoyed 365 days a year.

And now it’s getting set to launch its 98Days of Summer menu, with two new sum-mer drinks and new menu items all ready tolaunch in the next few days.

In the meantime, for the record, Murphyhas two favourites she likes to enjoy on thepatio: a glass of Whitehaven SauvignonBlanc and a ceviche.

Cactus Club has three Burnaby locations:Market Crossing (7320 Market Crossing);Kingsway (4653 Kingsway) and NorthBurnaby (4219B Lougheed Hwy.) Check outwww.cactusclubcafe.com for all the details.

BMother Nature likes to toss grey skies intothe mix occasionally, but even she can’tstop the fun when the Burnaby Blues +Roots Festival hits Deer Lake Park.

The Blues + Roots Festival earned readers’votes for Outdoor Concert of the Year.

The vote will come as no surprise toanyone who’s ever enjoyed one of the 16annual festivals that have drawn thousandsof folks to Burnaby for the August event.

Last year, a lineup headlined by Canadianrockers The Sheepdogs and Lee Fields andthe Expressions drew a huge crowd, withfolks of all ages and backgrounds turn-ing out to enjoy the day of music on threestages.

That’s one of the beauties of the festival, since it gives local, up-and-coming actsa chance to strut their stuff in front of thesame crowd of music-lovers that turns outto take in unstoppable performances by

nationally and internationally acclaimedartists.

The vibe is always mellow and good-na-tured, as folks sprawl on the festival lawn totake in the music. Food and drink vendorsare always on hand, as are artisans andcraft vendors, and kids even have their ownspecial activity area – the make-your-own-guitar craft is a perennial hit.

All told, it’s just a gem of a day that offerssomething for everyone – whatever yourtaste in music, whatever your age, whateveryour background, there’s a spot for you atthe Burnaby Blues + Roots Festival.

The 2016 version is set to return on Sat-urday, Aug. 6. To stay on top of the latestnews, find the festival on Facebook, www.facebook.com/BurnabyBlues, or Twitter@BurnabyBlues. Or check back to www.burnabybluesfestival.com for updates onthe 2016 festival.

BAsk any Burnaby resident to name a favou-rite green space in the city, and chances arethe words “Deer Lake” will come up timeand time again.

It will come as no surprise to anyone whoenjoys this natural gem in the heart of thecity that the lake remains popular withBurnaby NOW readers. Once again, DeerLake has earned a nod as Best Place ToWalk Your Dog.

And why wouldn’t it? The network of trailsthat circles the lake and its park space of-fers gentle terrain for strolling along bothdeveloped and undeveloped pathways andboardwalk. Check out the city’s websiteat www.burnaby.ca for a recommended5.7-kilometre route around the lake andsurrounding meadow.

The lake is at the heart of the city’s culturalprecinct, with the architecturally inspiringShadbolt Centre for the Arts right on itsshores, and the Burnaby Art Gallery, DeerLake Gallery and Burnaby Village Museumwithin easy reach.

The natural beauty of the area is unbeat-able, what with the green lawns and thebeautiful views over the lake and the citybeyond. And the park has plenty to offerfor a spring or summer day out, with aplayground, beach, picnic sites and a boatlaunch to get you in touch with nature.

All of this without ever leaving the city– and with abundant parking and transitoptions to boot.

It’s hard to get any better than that.

It’s a dog’s life at DeerLake Park

Deer Lake Parkis a popularspot for dogwalking – soit’s no surpriseit won BurnabyNOW readers’votes again asBest Place toWalk Your dog.

Once there, you’re on top of the world – orat least on top of the city. Which is why it’sno surprise that Burnaby Mountain wonreaders’ votes as Best View in the city.

Trek up the mountain and you’ll quickly seewhy. Standing on the grassy lawn next tothe rose gardens and Horizons restaurant, you have views in all directions – over thecity of Burnaby, across to downtown Van-couver and Stanley Park, over Burrard Inlet.

For the highest view of all, you can evenscramble to the top of the new climbingstructure in the small playground and lookas far as the human eye can see.

Art lovers will be captivated by the Ka-mui Mintara - the Playground of the Godssculpture, a dozen carved poles createdby Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his

son, Shusei, to mark the goodwill betweenBurnaby and its sister city of Kushiro, Japan.

And, for the outdoorsy types, the exten-sive woodlands surrounding the 370-metremountain that make up the Burnaby Moun-tain Conservation Area also offer a wonder-ful piece of wilderness in the city.

First logged more than a century ago,Burnaby Mountain became a popular hikingarea in the 1920s. The city dedicated thearea for park and recreation use in 1957,and Simon Fraser University donated 820acres of its land to the conservation area in1995, making it a true wilderness environ-ment with some wildlife remaining such asdeer, coyotes, and even a few black bears.

BHe consistently tops the polls in Burnabycity council elections – and he keeps doingthe same in our Burnaby NOW Readers’Choice Awards. Mayor Derek Corrigan hasonce again emerged victorious as BestPolitician.

The win will come as no surprise to anyonewho follows Burnaby politics, since Corri-gan has been leading the Burnaby Citizens’Association to victory after repeated victoryat Burnaby City Hall. (For those keepingscore, the BCA is now at three straightsweeps of city council and school board, and Corrigan himself earned nearly 69 percent of the popular vote last time the citywent to the polls.)

Corrigan has been serving the citizens ofBurnaby in an elected position since firstjoining city council in 1987.

Whether you know Corrigan personally ornot, odds are high that you’ve heard hisname and his voice. He consistently makesheadlines for his stances on controversial is-

sues, from the mayors’ council’s transporta-tion plan to homelessness to new develop-ments around the city’s town centres. Hisprofile rose even higher after the KinderMorgan pipeline expansion plans becamebig news in Burnaby and across the nation.

And, of course, politics is in the family forCorrigan, one-half of the power couple thatincludes his wife, Kathy Corrigan, the NewDemocrat MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake.

Corrigan was born in Vancouver and at-tended Sir Charles Tupper High School. After winning a scholarship to UBC, hewas granted early admission to law schoolafter three years of undergraduate studyin political science and philosophy. He wascalled to the B.C. Bar in 1978.

Whatever task he’s undertaking, Corrigancontinues to be regarded as one of themost outspoken and tough-talking civicleaders in the region – and he’s showingno signs of fading into the background anytime soon.

Corrigan tops the polls again

BIsabel Kolic can’t help but be slightlyoverwhelmed by the fact that the HeightsMerchants Association has been honouredas NOW readers’ favourite CommunityService Organization.

“Aw, that’s so awesome,” she said. “Giventhat there’s dozens of excellent and very, very different community service organiza-tions in the city … it’s quite something tohave the public think of us.”

Kolic, who’s the group’s executive direc-tor, said the association works hard toprovide advocacy on issues that matter tothe people who live, work and shop in theHeights community.

Over the past year, for instance, the groupstepped up to the plate when residentsand businesses had concerns about a re-duction in bus service on Hastings Street.

“Whenever something like that comes upin the community, because we are a voicefor the community, we always raise ourconcerns,” she said.

Not to mention, she noted, the HeightsMerchants Association is also responsiblefor the perennially popular Hats Off Dayfestival (which, coincidentally, has repeat-edly won Burnaby NOW readers’ votes asthe Best Annual Burnaby Festival).

Kolic said she’s humbled to receive thehonour from NOW readers given the largenetwork of worthy organizations workinghard for a range of causes in Burnaby.

OF

2016

Some folks from Burnaby may still remem-ber him as a kid from Seaforth Elementaryor Cariboo Hill Secondary – a kid whodreamed about hockey and happened tolove to sing.

Now, millions of people around the worldknow his name and own his music – andonce again, Michael Bublé makes his wayonto the winners’ list for Burnaby NOWreaders.

The superstar crooner has once again takenthe honours as Best Burnaby Celebrity.

It’s been a big year for the megastar record-ing artist with the smooth, soulful voice. Heand his wife, Luisana Lopilato. welcomedtheir second child just this past January –baby Elias, a younger brother to Noah.

Bublé was also named to the CanadianWalk of Fame at the end of 2015 – and, inan acceptance speech, the Burnaby boypaid tribute to the family that has stood by

him since he first dreamed of becoming aperformer.

“There were many nights where the audi-ence was literally just my parents, my sistersand grandparents,” he said in the speech.“They would never give up on me, and Icould never give up on myself.”

The international superstar also paid tributeto his homeland as the “land of kindnessand empathy.”

He got his big break in 2000, when he sangat the wedding of former prime ministerBrian Mulroney’s daughter – and came tothe attention of award-winning producerDavid Foster.

A slew of Grammy and Juno Awards and ahost of chart-topping albums later, it seemsthis Burnaby boy is just going to keep onmaking his hometown proud.

BThe “bottom line” means more thanjust money for Vancity. It means a three-pronged approach that looks at the finan-cial, social and environmental impacts ofeverything it does.

“We’ve always had a triple bottom line ap-proach,” says Jeremy Trigg, Vancity’s direc-tor of facility and environmental manage-ment, who’s been working with the creditunion for more than 30 years.

It’s no surprise that Burnaby NOW readersonce again voted Vancity (in particular itsBurnaby Heights branch) the Best Sustain-able Business, seeing that “sustainability”is a focus that reaches across the company, from its buildings to its day-to-day opera-tions.

On the facility front, the company does itsbest to produce environmentally friendlybuildings. Both its Heights and Kingswaybranches have achieved the Gold LEEDstandard, and a recent heat recovery proj-

ect at its head office saw it reduce green-house gases by 25 per cent in the first year.

On an operations level, 95 per cent of itsbranches are now zero-waste facilities.

Beyond the buildings, Trigg notes, thecompany also tries to lead the way by edu-cating both members and other businessesand corporations on how to build a moresustainable future. Local branches offermany information sessions for members ona wide range of sustainability topics.

And, holistically speaking, the company’svery philosophy is based on “sustainability”– in the sense of building a community thatcan continue on. Because it’s a local creditunion, it means that all local deposits areused to help lend money locally and boostsmall businesses who want to grow. Thosebusinesses, in turn, can help individuals tobuild a thriving community.

Check out www.vancity.com for more onthe company and to find a branch.

BA decade ago, “sustainability” wasn’t thebuzzword on everyone’s lips that it is today.

But in the printing industry, companieswere already beginning to take the issue ofenvironmental responsibility very seriously- and no company more so than Burnaby’sown Hemlock Printers.

Hemlock has shared honours as BestSustainable Business in this year’s BurnabyNOW Readers’ Choice Awards – and withgood reason.

The company has been pushing for en-vironmentally sustainable operations formore than a decade.

President Richard Kouwenhoven (son ofcompany founder Dick Kouwenhoven)notes the company’s environmental pushwas really sparked by its move towardscertification by the Forest StewardshipCouncil, which promotes responsible forestmanagement practices in business.

The company wanted to do its best tomake sustainability part of its day-to-dayoperations, and it struck a sustainabilitycommittee in 2004 to explore ways of do-ing just that. The committee has come upwith a wide range of ideas to reduce wasteand to incorporate technology that willreduce its environmental impact. It evenhad an intern dedicated to just that job –a person who ended up working for thecompany for five years.

Hemlock introduced “Zero,” a carbon-neu-tral printing program that allows individualcustomers to offset the carbon footprint oftheir particular print job by investing in rec-ognized renewable and clean-tech projects.Along the way, Kouwenhoven noted, thecompany became known as “that greenprinting company.”

See www.hemlock.com for all about thecompany.
