The Daily Herald readers have spoken — the best cup of joe in the RoanokeValley hands down is from Oscar’s Restaurant. Laura Arthur, co-owner pictured above, said on an average week they probably serve more than5,000 cups of coffee. The average per week day is right around 350 and onthe weekends more than 500 cups of java a day. She also shared that thecoffee maker they use at Oscar’s is the same one since 1960 (the restaurantopened in 1953) and she claims the customers say it is the coffee maker thatis key to the unique taste, along with premium blend coffee. Arthur said thefolks at Oscar’s are so excited about the best of the Valley voting results. Another best of the Valley winner for Oscar’s is their fried chicken. Arthursaid most of her customers prefer fried chicken the old fashioned way, onthe bone as opposed to tenders. Also she shared the restaurant always triesto improve upon their product and the key is the quality of the chicken theyprepare, along with their great cooking staff. You can’t hardly go anywherein the Valley and not find iced tea and the vote for the best around is alsofound at Oscar’s Restaurant. Arthur says they boil there tea on the stove, itis not brewed. In August we started asking you to tellus who your top three picks in variouscategories were — 62 categories to be ex-act. You, our readers, responded glori-ously and have definitely spoken yourmind on just who, where and what yourfavorites are in the Roanoke Valley.

The Daily Herald does our Reader’sChoice Awards every year to give read-ers an outlet for input on the best foodand beverage, automotive options, mul-tiple services, best professionals, educa-tors, shopping and top brags in the Val-ley.

In addition to breaking down the bestin our community, those who participat-ed in the survey had a chance to win a

gift certificate from the Roanoke ValleyChamber of Commerce. Those whofilled out at least 47 of the categories us-ing the original ballot form, shared theirname, address, phone number and an-swered how they received their newsfrom The Daily Herald — they were en-tered into a drawing. The first namedrawn got the top prize of a $100 gift cer-tificate and the winner is Malei Council. The second name drawn, BrittanyMead, was the winner of a $50 certifi-cate. And finally, the third place prizewinner of a $25 certificate goes to AmyCrawford.

Congratulations to the winners! Not only do we like to recognize our

readers with this annual survey, but alsothe businesses and professionals in ourcommunity, they deserve some kudos, too. At some point, if not daily, someoneneeds their car fixed, new tires, or a den-tal cleaning, legal, financial or medicaladvice, or where to go to get a haircut, find the best florist for bouquets to sayhappy birthday, get well soon or I’m sor-ry ... not to mention top places to visit forgifts, lawn & garden, flooring, furnitureor food. Also a chance to recognize Val-ley educators like top teacher, principaland coach — whose very important taskis educating our area youth.

The bottom line is we all need each oth-er at some point during the day, month

or year, and folks should let others knowwhen they are appreciated — and that isthe main reason for our annual reader’schoice awards.

So, now that the results are before you, take a gander on whom the Roanoke Val-ley voted the best.
