011 is here.... let’s be real!

Tidings

The world is relishing its annual season of

extravagance with Christmas just gone and new year

already here – time to renew familial ties, exchange gifts

of love and visit friends and family spread across distant

shores. Every year around this time as the festive cheer

spreads across, a new lease of life gets injected into the

travel sector, as the passenger foot falls increase.

Last year same time my message was focused on

preparing for the difficult times that lay ahead, remaining

focused on our strategy and staying our course to ensure

that we emerged from the crisis in a strong position. We

had serious concerns of the year ahead, and how we, and

our travel partners would fare. But we stuck to “Being

real” and hence sailed through the difficult times.

The highlight of the year bygone was the

Commonwealth Games being held in India in the last

quarter. The overall response was not impressive, and

things did not appear hunky dory due to varied factors

known to all of us, yet the games did provide a valuable

opportunity to showcase our country to the world.

In the current climate of change, Amadeus too is

on the threshold of path-breaking new projects. The

GDS space is seeing a gradual shift from Air to Non-

Air products; however both need to be utilized in

conjunction for maximum benefit.

We have been pursuing a lot of diversified goals

and are confident to make a success out of them.

Airline IT, Hotel IT, Rail IT and Travel Agency IT have

a vital role to play as we move forward. Travel is the

largest e-Commerce vertical in India. Over 17% of all

air reservations in India are being done through various

travel portals and online travel business is expected to

reach $2 billion mark in India.

With our choice of investments, and with the support

of our people in these challenging times, we believe we

are better equipped than our competitors, in the GDS

arena, travel IT and hospitality sector, to remain stable

and to achieve future growth and success.

Amadeus India is widely considered a pioneer in the

Indian Travel Industry. And rightly so! The company has,

over the last decade, consistently delivered solutions

that not just fulfill the aspirations of millions of Indians.

And what has led the company to achieving remarkable

results within these parameters is its spirit of constant

innovation.

This constant commitment to innovation is crucial

for our success. An IT company that does not innovate

cannot have a very long life. We must always be

delivering technologies that are able to match the needs

of our customers as they change.

In 2011 you will see more examples of Innovation

in action. I hope you can also embrace an innovation

approach to your everyday role with Amadeus. Through

a constant commitment to doing things better, faster

and thinking ‘outside the box’, we will ensure we remain

in a leadership position and be a company that others

aspire to emulate.

I look forward to actively lead, contribute to the

growth and shape the travel and tourism market in

India, along with you all…

Here’s wishing that you enter the New Year with

fresh aspirations and in good health!

By Anil Mathur

If Life and Times are uncertain, this is best exemplified by Tourism in the country. This is true for most years but all the more so for 2010, when there were big hopes of a boost in arrivals during and because of the Commonwealth Games hosted in Delhi.

How and why such expectations were created is a separate exercise in itself, but the fact remains that the much hyped CWG did not match up to produce the numbers that were being churned out both by the authorities and the industry.

Who was to be blamed for this can be debated for long and without any positive results, but surely it is a good topic of research as to what the basis of the projections is and whether such events actually do generate travel as such. Did we market the event well?

The positive side of the CWG2010, most agree, is that it did help create the infrastructure, which will be utilized in times to come, even if the hotels suffered low occupancies during the games window period as such.

Interestingly, Sarabjit Singh, managing director, Travelite (India), and president of the ITTA, Indian Tourist Transport Association, points out that all Indian DMCs and foreign tour operators had planned to skip the period from Sept 1 to October 31 2010 as it was perceived to be very high season due to CWG and almost, more than a year ago, hotels started giving rates in excess of US$ 300 to US$ 400 per night.

He goes on to add that after the worldwide financial crisis, there was some recovery in March and April 2010, but the CWG delayed the signs of recovery till first week of November. The period December 2010 to April 2011 seems to be good, Singh feels, adding that business from the US may improve, especially after the very positive visit of President Obama to India.

Sarabjit Singh, who has been attending most of the marts for years, says that various new markets are opening up from Africa, Europe, China and Middle East, and signs are positive for inbound tourism, but ‘ we are concerned due to certain restrictions by the government on visa regulations, citing security concerns, which may hamper future business prospects.

Group General Manager Hotel Parkland O P Mendiratta, feels, “first half of 2010 was not very great but definitely came out of recession. Things are better after the CWG and tourism has actually picked up. He points out that while the games could not generate the desired number of foreign tourists, it did send out positive signals to the world, as did the visit of President Obama.”

“The Parkland hotels did well, Mendiratta says, because of location in South Delhi, budget tarrif and patronage of the CWG authorities.”

Giving an outside-Delhi perspective, Jaipur-based Bhim Singh, managing director, Rajasthan Tours says that ‘it is too early to assess 2010 as we are in the middle of the tourist season and the assessment

can only be made in April 2011.’ However, he goes on to add that looking at the trend, 2010 is likely to be better than 2009, especially in inbound tourism, but “domestic and NRIs are also contributing a lot, as such we hope to end up with satisfaction.”

STIC Travel Group chairman Subhash Goyal, who headed the IATO for long, says that ‘2010 was a great year, full of hopes and enthusiasm. He elaborates that domestic air traffic grew at 14.87 per cent and international air traffic at 15.54 per cent, which indicates revival of economy in India. Several airlines are coming into India or expanding services, points out Goyal, whose company will handle the Phillipine Airline when it starts six services a week from March 2011.’ Goyal will also handle Mihin from Sri Lanka and the company has invested much in technology.

He further says, “this year the leisure segment is looking for new destinations as well, like Scotland, Monaco, Oman, Turkey, Morocco, Fiji, Caribbean islands, apart from regular destinations like Thailand, Macau, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.”

Goyal points out that some of the emerging trends during the year were single woman traveler and religious/katha cruise holidays, with cruise liners offering exclusive tours, with meditation and Shrimad Bhagwat Katha or Lord Vishnu incarnation stories during the sea sojourn. In domestic tourism, the most popular destinations were Goa, Kerala, Rajasthan, MP, and HP.

The Year that was

interface

I N D U S T R Y S P E A K

Pilgrim destinations like Mata Vaishno Devi and Shirdi received tourist all year round.

“The MICE segment grew in 2010 and will continue to grow in 2011,” says Goyal.

On the subject of CWG, Goyal says that ‘the event saw a not so satisfactory increase in numbers, but the opening and closing ceremonies got praise from all over, and the multiplier effect of the infrastructure created during the games will have short and long term gains.’

Rajinder Rai president, Travel Agents Association of India, feels that India’s tourism industry experienced a strong period of growth in 2010, driven by coordinated government campaigns to promote ‘Incredible India’ and growth in high spending foreign tourists, not to forget the burgeoning India middle class Rai feels, “much of the increase in disposable income in India is spent on travel. In 2010, outbound travel saw a greater push than inbound travel,” says Rai.

“With new airports in many Indian cities, traveling to India would be a good experience,” opines Rai. ‘Among the emerging market’, Rai feels, ‘are MICE, wellness and medical tourism, culture and heritage tourism, adventure, wildlife and pilgrimage. Indians traveling for leisure in India—domestic tourism—is a new thrust, as

is sports tourism, cruise tourism, volunteer tourism and student exchange programs.’

India’s huge population of 1.2 billion has a growing middle class, which has a fascination for travel and deep pockets to spend on leisure activities.

Kapil Kaul, CEO South Asia, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), feels that the airlines did well in 2010 but he is quick to add that there may be some more mergers and acquisitions in the industry, as part of consolidation.

“LCCs continue to dominate the domestic market,” says Kaul, adding that “most of the LCCs emerged stronger, as compared to full service carriers, and witnessed strong growth in passenger numbers.” Passenger traffic for the quarter ending June 10 increased by 13.7 per cent over Q4FY10 and 23 per cent over Q1FY10.

For Q1FY 11, the average ATF price was 26.3 per cent dearer as compared to the process during Q1FY10.

Domestic traffic bounced back to positive territory after 12 months of year-on-year decline registered upto July 2009. Passenger traffic for the quarters ending June 09 and March 10 increased by 30.7 per cent and 21.4 per cent respectively over respective quarters of last fiscal, warranting the fact that demand for travel in India has picked up significantly.

1st1st1st1st1st No No No No Novembervembervembervembervember, 2010, 2010, 2010, 2010, 2010. This mandate requires airlinesto transmit SFPD (passenger name, date of birth andgender) to the TSA at least 72 hours before departurefor advance bookings, and immediately for bookingsmade with in 72 hours, for all flights operating to,from and within the United States.

Failure to transmit this information can result in financial penalties forairlines by the TSA, which in turn could lead toADMs being sent to agents, and possible black-listing by airlines ofrepeatedly offending agents. Customers would also be subject to increasedsecurity clearance and greater inconvenience. In order to comply with this mandate, a number of measures are beingintroduced which will impact you, our travel agency customers. Theseinclude the introduction of a new industry standard SSR which will allowairlines to assist travel agents to identify bookings with missing SFPD, andthe restriction of ticket issuance for non-compliant PNRs.To help you to better incorporate these changes with a minimal impact toyour daily processes, we provide a full suite of solutions to assist in thecollection of SFPD. “Travel agencies remain a key sales channel for Cathay Pacific,” said Clarence Tai, General Manager Sales & Distribution for the airline. “It is critical that our travel agency partners have access to a broad range of fare products of Cathay Pacific and Dragonair. Amadeus is an important distribution channel for us, enabling true global coverage. We are pleased to announce this new agreement as we enhance our distribution relationship with Amadeus”.

The new agreement offers Amadeus subscribers in Asia access to the same level of fares, availability and functionality – and under the same conditions – as any other travel agent content channel. Outside Asia, Cathay Pacific and Dragonair have increased their content guarantee to Amadeus to include all fares, availability and functionality – again, under the same conditions – as the airlines distribute through its own website, call centre and other travel agency content access channels.

David Doctor, Director, Airline & Travel Agency said, “Amadeus has an excellent, long-term relationship with Cathay Pacific as both a provider of Airline IT solutions and as a distribution partner, ensuring Cathay Pacific fares are available for our extensive global network of travel agencies. We are committed to securing long-term partnerships with leading airlines in order to

ensure our subscribers have access to the most comprehensive range of flight options and are delighted to announce this multi-year agreement with Cathay Pacific.”

In addition to distributing Cathay Pacific’s content to more than 90,000 travel agency points of sale worldwide, Amadeus provides the e-Commerce technology that powers the cathaypacific.com website, enabling the airline’s customers to shop, book and manage their travel online. Cathay Pacific and Dragonair are also in the process of implementing the Amadeus Altéa Customer Management System, which will manage reservations, inventory and departure control from late 2011.

“Amadeus technology plays a critical role in distributing Cathay Pacific’s product both directly to consumers online and via our travel agency users around the world,” said Doctor. This new agreement ensures that the widest possible range of fares and flights are made available via the Amadeus GDS channel.”

As part of a long-standing cooperation between the two companies, Amadeus is providing European travel agents - from Benelux to Spain, through Germany and Italy - with a new solution that allows easy access to the whole SNCF product range, fares and functionalities. From their usual Amadeus Selling Platform desktop, travel agents can now book French rail tickets with the booking merged back to the Amadeus Passenger Name Record. In addition, Amadeus Web Services - a standard way of integrating web based applications - will soon enable travel agents to build a booking interface on their online portal that includes rail in multi-modal displays or in packages.

This latest improvement in SNCF rail content distribution follows the recent successful deployment of E-ticketing technology, which is available on most French domestic routes and soon to international trains. With E-Ticketing, travellers can receive a PDF file with a 2D bar code via e-mail. This can be printed at home or at the office as with air or car travel. Travellers benefit from an improved experience with hassle-free boarding, by just showing the E-ticket to the on-board controller, exchange and refund over the phone or the Internet, and a smooth rail journey downtown to downtown.

To benefit from the best SNCF content, Amadeus Travel Agencies just have to get a free SNCF accreditation via the local Rail Europe subsidiary.

“We are very happy to partner with Amadeus to improve the reach of our products outside the French

market. Using Amadeus’ technology and travel distribution expertise and knowledge, travel agents in Europe will have easy access to our products benefitting from some of our latest innovations, such as the E-ticket for SNCF Trains. By leveraging on Amadeus solutions developed with SNCF on the French market, any European travel agency equipped with Amadeus will access in “real time” to all improvements such as E-ticket” commented Fabien Soulet – International Sales Director, SNCF.

“With this solution, accessing rail information and booking the best of rail in conjunction with other travel services (hotel car rental etc) become even easier. Now the European travel agencies will be able to better serve people looking for rail, everyday as well as under particular circumstances such as the recent volcanic disorder.” Olivier Pinna, CEO, Rail Europe Continental.

“Unlike the airlines, the rail industry does not have a common standard data exchange, therefore, making a rail booking requires good railway functionality knowledge and the ability to use several rail booking applications,” commented Diane Bouzebiba, Head of Amadeus Rail. “By integrating railways in Amadeus Selling Platform and our web service product, we are now providing an easier way of distributing rail products. This is a win-win for all parties: for SNCF – who benefit from a greater reach – and for the travel agent, who has a back office feed, improved productivity and access to relevant content to provide a better service for the traveller.”

best in class partner to support their business.

Philippe Chérèque, EVP, Commercial at Amadeus said: “We have built the Amadeus Hotel Platform in order to most effectively support hotel chains in addressing their key strategic challenges. In today’s market, it is vital that their IT infrastructure can support global business growth and expansion whilst guaranteeing operational efficiencies on a global scale. With a thorough understanding of the current and future shape of the hotels sector, we are 100% committed to helping our customers remove technology barriers by offering them a central solution, allowing them to benefit fully from the power of new technology whilst transforming their fixed cost into a variable one. With this in mind hoteliers can focus on transforming their business making the most of emerging opportunities in a way that is right for them.”

In conjunction with the launch, Amadeus today also reveals the findings from a major new industry report entitled ‘Hotels 2020: Beyond Segmentation’ http://www.amadeus.com/hotelit/beyond-segmentation.html, which identifies the characteristics of the future guest and explores how hotel companies can respond accordingly. Developed by independent research firm Fast Future Research, this breakthrough report outlines how traditional customer segmentation in the hospitality sector is dead and will be replaced by service spectrums. This radical shift means that hotel companies will need to target, tailor and relate to guests based on their individual preferences and behaviors if they are to succeed.

Rohit Talwar, Chief Executive of Fast Future Research says: “What we see is a shift from neatly defined customer segments to a more fragmented set of service spectrums that will demand hotels act in a way that is guest-focused personal, connected and informed. The right

technology will be an increasingly important weapon in delivering on guest expectations and securing brand differentiation.”

The study contains both quantitative and qualitative data and draws on desk research, expert interviews and a global survey on future strategies and business models for the sector. The survey was conducted with 600 respondents from around the world, of whom 42 per cent work in the

travel industry. All Amadeus Hotel IT solutions

are based on open technology and industry standards, allowing hotel companies to benefit from continual technology evolution and securing competitive advantage. The launch of Amadeus Hotel Platform, together with reinforced Hotel IT teams based in Europe and in the U.S., demonstrates Amadeus’ commitment to the global hospitality industry.

Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, one of the world’s largest airline groups flying more than 71 million passengers annually, and Amadeus, a leading travel technology partner and transaction processor for the global travel and tourism industry, today announce the group’s successful migration to Amadeus’ Altéa Inventory solution.

The migration sees the replacement of the two legacy systems that have served each airline for the last forty years and marks a major step in the group’s initiative to modernise and consolidate its Passenger Service System.

Fully integrated with Altéa Reservation, the common airline group’s reservation system, Altéa Inventory allows Air France-KLM to benefit from unique capabilities such as real-time seat availability across all direct and indirect channels including online distributors, and to take advantage of the most advanced revenue management techniques.

“This successful migration is a strategic step towards the transformation of our IT systems and the achievement of Air France-KLM synergies.” said Bruno Matheu, Air France-KLM eVP Marketing, Revenue-Management and Network. “Thanks to the flexibility of Altéa Inventory, the Air France-KLM group has been able to migrate to a platform supporting the combined advanced needs of two major airlines whilst leveraging both carriers’ best practices”.

“The capability of Altéa Inventory is a key building block towards the creation of a new generation revenue management system common to Air France and KLM that will allow global optimisation of our unique co-branded network”, added

Pieter Bootsma, Air France-KLM Senior VP Revenue Management.

The project was a major undertaking over several years that delivered noteworthy improvements to the Amadeus platform such as availability cascading, full support of journey data and enhanced automated flight re-accommodation and schedule management. With nearly two million flights involved as part of the process and with more than fifty systems impacted, the migration was especially significant. Indeed, it required two critical system cutovers in only two weeks where Air France and its franchisee airlines (Regional, Brit Air, City Jet, VLM and CCM) plus KLM and its partner airlines (Kenya Airways and Martinair) were transitioned to the Amadeus platform.

“In a project of this magnitude, the collaboration between Air France, KLM and Amadeus was instrumental to ensuring a seamless project execution and a smooth operational start for the new platform” said Philippe Chér?eque, Amadeus EVP, Commercial. “We are proud to have provided the necessary technology and skills to accommodate the combined

air France, KlM and their partners successfully complete migration to Amadeus’ Altéa Inventory System

complexity of such large airlines in a true partnership approach. Working with Air France and KLM was an enriching experience that pushed us to stay at the forefront of innovation and enabled the integration of interesting new features in the Altéa suite”.

Air France-KLM will complement the adoption of the Altéa suite with the upcoming integration of ticketing and departure control systems over the coming years, with the objective to further integrate both airlines’ critical operational processes and deliver long term competitive advantage.
