After an authentic French breakfast of fresh croissants, baguettes, and assorted pastries, visit Gien,home to Faience pottery, followed by an afternoon cruise to La Gazonne surrounded by lakes and ponds.Set sail for Briare and Gustave Eiffel's stunning aqueduct across the River Loire where you can ride bike,if you want, to explore this magical area. Walk Briare's famed market with fruit and vegetable, seafood,cheese and French fashion stalls selling these famed local creations. Cruise to the family-run vineyard ofSancerre for your final French afternoon to taste local wines and enjoy the medieval hilltop village. Guests are met at the designated meeting point and transferred to thespacious Renaissance moored in Montargis where a Champagne Welcomeawaits you. Then there is time to explore the pretty village of Montargis byfoot or bicycle. Dinner on board. (D)

Day 2 - Montargis/Montbouy

Morning cruise through the Loire countryside with towpath cycling toMontcresson. After lunch we transfer to Chateau de Fontainebleau. Towalk through this palace is to walk through the history of France, and everyFrench royal family added its own architectural style and features when inresidence. Return to the barge and enjoy a late evening cruise toMontbouy, before dinner on board. (B,L,D)

Day 3 - Montbouy/Rogny les Sept Ecluses

Morning cruise to historic Rogny and its 350 year old 7 lock-flight. Today's excursion is to ChateauGuedelon. A team of fifty people have taken on an extraordinary task to build a castle using the very sametechniques and materials as in the Middle Ages. Work on the site began in 1997 and is scheduled to take25 years to complete. Guedelon offers a unique opportunity to witness the different stages of a castle'sconstruction with each phase being of interest in its own right. Alternatively we visit the Chateau de SaintFargeau which is 1000 years old. In 980, Heribert, Auxerre's bishop and biological son of King HuguesCapet, built this fortified hunting meeting place. Day 4 - Rogny les Sept Ecluses/La Gazonne

After a leisurely breakfast of fresh croissants, baguettes and assorted pastries we visit Gien, home of theFaience pottery. After lunch we enjoy an afternoon cruise to La Gazonne, a beautiful mooring surroundedby lakes and ponds that provide water for the workings of the Canal de Briare. Dinner ashore at theMichelin-starred Auberge des Templiers in Les Bezards. (B,L,D)

Morning cruise to Briare and Gustave Eiffel's magical aqueduct across the River Loire with walking and


bicycling for those that wish to do so. We preview Friday's crossing of this amazing 10,000 ton, 662 meterPont Canal which was completed in September 1896. This afternoon we visit Chateau de Sully sur Loire.The castle originally belonged to Georges de la Tremoille, who infuriated Joan of Arc by encouraging theDauphin to devote himself to idle hunting in the forests around Sully. After Joan's failure to liberate Paris in1430, de la Tremoille virtually imprisoned her in the castle. In the 18th Century Voltaire, exiled from Paris,also spent time at the Chateau. Dinner on board. Day 6 - Briare/Chatillon sur Loire

This morning wander around the fruit and vegetable, seafood, cheese and French fashion stalls in themarket in Briare and then a short cruise across the aqueduct before lunch on board. Afternoon visit to afamily run vineyard in Sancerre. This medieval hilltop village overlooks a vibrant and pulsating region whichhas known viticulture since Roman times. The highlight of thisexcursion will be a visit of a museum entirely dedicated to the making of theBeaujolais wines. Lunch on board. An afternoon optional trip to ClunyAbbey is on the itinerary today. In the early Middle Age, Cluny was Europe'smost influential monastery controlling several hundred monasticfoundations throughout Europe, and the world's largest Christian structureuntil St. Peter's was built in Rome. Day 3 - Chalon-sur-Saone/Tournus

Once we have docked in Chalon-sur- Saone, those who have booked theoptional ''Beaune and the Burgundy'' excursion will be driven to Beaune, theepicenter of Burgundy's wine trade. After a visit of the Hotel-Dieu, originallyan almshouse dating back to the 15th Century, you will learn the history of viniculture during a wine tastingsession. After lunch on board you will be driven to the medieval villages of ''Brancion and Cormatin''. Strollthe streets of Brancion before visiting the magnificent castle of Cormatin and its magnificent gardens. Today the Amadeus Symphony docks back in Lyon early in the morning. Our optional guided tour of Lyonenables you to absorb the city's most important sights. Day 5 - Avignon

Morning arrival in Avignon. The folkloristic song about its old stone bridge has made this city's namefamiliar to people all over the world. Avignon is one of the few cities whose medieval walls are almostcompletely preserved. The popes who resided here were responsible for building its majestic ''Palais desPapes'', whose steeply rising facade bears witness to their hegemony. It can be visited in the morning inthe course of our optional guided city tour. In the afternoon you can either savor the hustle and bustle inthe narrow streets and squares of Avignon's old quarter, or join our optional excursion to Pont du Gard andUzes. The perfectly preserved Pont du Gard ranks as one of the architectural masterpieces of the ancientworld. For more than 2,000 years this Roman aqueduct supplied water to vast tracts of the Romanprovinces in southern France. Day 6 - Avignon/Arles

Morning optional excursion to the picturesque Camargue region where land and sea seem to merge. Here,where nature reigns - if you are lucky - you might see some of its famous wild horses and flamingoes. Day 7 - Viviers/Le Pouzin

From Viviers you can visit one of France's most interesting geographical features, the Ardeche gorge.Over several millennia waterpower has carved out this very romantic gorge through limestone. The coachwill follow the river as it meanders through the gorge which is up to 300 meters deep. During this optionalexcursion you will have an opportunity to see the famous Pont d'Arc - a natural stone bridge that hasbecome an icon for the Ardeche region. The Amadeus Symphony will continue to Le Pouzin, where thosewho have been on the optional coach trip will come back on board. The last stretch starts during lunch asthe vessel returns to Lyon. Today we leave Amboise. We stop en-route for a visit of the Chateau de Chambord the first Chateau ofthe Valley to be proclaimed by UNESCO as a world heritage. With its 400 rooms and over 300chimneys, Chambord is a jewel of the French Renaissance. Today enjoy a full day excursion to Champagne, the region where thisfinest sparkling wine is made. During your first guided tour of a champagnehouse you'll gain insight into the world of champagne, beginning with thesoil, the three main grape varieties, the vines through the seasons, theirpruning in winter to their ripening and harvesting in autumn. After lunch ina local restaurant, visit the Cathedral of Reims, a gothic masterpiece wherethe kings of France were once crowned and a UNESCO World HeritageSite. Continue with another visit of a famous champagne house in Reimswith its underground chalk cellar. After a history lesson, journeyto the famed vineyards of the Rhone Valley to taste award-winning wines and explore unique markets andattractions in three special Provencal villages: St. Remy de Provence, Les Baux de Provence, and Arles.Then be seduced by the unfettered charm of Gordes, Roussillon, and Uzes. The fifth day of this Frenchvacation begins with a tour of the Principality of Monaco, where visitors can recline in the luxe life of MonteCarlo. Later, the small hilltop village of Eze will deliver stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and astroll on the warm boardwalk of Nice will bring calm to the mind and spirit. Conclude the trip with a visit tothe medieval village, Saint Paul de Vence, then Cannes, the glitzy beach town known for its film festival.

Day 1 - Avignon

Arrival at Avignon railway station and transfer to your hotel. Rest of the dayat leisure to start discovering this lovely and charming town.

Day 2 - Avignon/Orange/ St. Remy de Provence/ Les Baux deProvence/ Arles/Avignon

Your day begins with a visit of Orange, a UNESCO World Heritage site.After a visit of the well preserved Roman Triumphal Arch, a symbol of theRoman imperial glory, your driver will take you on a journey through thevineyards between Orange and Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where a winetasting session of the most prestigious red wine in the Rhone valley awaitsyou. Continue to St. Remy de Provence, a picturesque market town. Themedieval streets of the Old Town jumble together to form a maze filled withupscale boutiques and pretty shops stocking Provencal products. Continuewith a visit of Les Baux de Provence, a village set upon a rock, and ofArles, a good example of the adaptation of an ancient city to medievalEuropean civilization. (B)

Day 3 - Avignon/Gordes/Roussillon/Avignon

Morning tour of Avignon, the City of the Popes. See the Popes Palace, thelargest gothic palace in the world, and the majestic Pont d'Avignon. In theafternoon, continue to Gordes, a hilltop village in the Luberon region. Itshouses and buildings of white stone root themselves into the sharp cliff ofthe mountain. Its labyrinth of ''calades'', narrow cobblestone streets, do notleave the visitor indifferent to its charms. Continue to Roussillon, a villagethat has seduced many artists. Its houses offer the passers-by a harmony of enchanting colors, artgalleries, and some very good restaurants. After a visit of the Senanque Abbey and Lavender Museum, wehead back to the hotel. (B)

Day 4 - Avignon/Nimes/ Uzes /Avignon

Start with a tour of Nimes, known for the greatest wealth of ancient buildings. See the Pont du Gard, themajestic Roman aqueduct, the Maison Carre, gorgeous example of a Roman Temple, and the Arena, thebest preserved arena in France. Continue with a visit of Uzes, a charming medieval village, self-proclaimedfirst duchy of France. (B)


Day 5 - Avignon/Aix en Provence/Nice

Today visit the fountain-filled Aix-en- Provence and step back in time. Vestiges of the Roman city are stillvisible at the Thermes Sextius spa, Gothic cloisters can be admired at the Cathedral, and sumptuousneoclassical houses that long inspired writers and artists can be seen in the Mazarin quarter. Visit of PaulCezanne's studio. Continue to Nice, and check in at your hotel. (B)

Day 6 - Nice

Today tour the lovely town of Nice. See the Promenade des Anglais, the famous waterfront boulevard, theelegant Belle Epoque-style buildings, and Marche aux Fleurs. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 7 - Nice/Cannes/Saint Paul de Vence/Monte Carlo/Eze/Nice

Your day is filled with exciting visits. Start with a visit of Cannes, the glitzy town known for its film festival.After a visit of Saint Paul de Vence, a medieval fortified village, we continue to the Principality of Monaco.From casinos to elegant balls, Monte Carlo has plenty of luxurious attractions to draw international jet-setters. The next stop will be the tiny village of Eze. Perched on a rocky hill above the sea, it could not getany prettier. With narrow cobblestone, pedestrian-only streets, wonderful views of the surrounding hillsand the azure water below, it is just as it was centuries ago.
