Welcome to our 8th annual Best Bet Bull sale. Holy Cow, what a diff erence a year makes. as I wrote this last year it was minus thirteen inside the calving barn and double that in the yard. This year we are enjoying balmy temperatures and least two more weeks of tropical air. With many of us having endured some prett y radical swings in the catt le business for the last dozen years it is encouraging to see the current market.

again it is a litt le hard to make the same comparisons-same range for 80 plus years, 7500 feet in elevati on, defi nitely not. This has been nothing less than a challenge, a new range completely. It started out with the spring range remaining the same and all bets off from there. a complete rewrite in directi on, through a new property over the Seven Sisters range unit and then heading all but west. The cows gave us the craziest look ever! now what! They said, for every step of the way. Three weeks, with fi ve riders and numerous tours and escapades, wow. at the end of the summer we were down 70 pounds, the wolves had contained a few and yes, only a few weeks longer. Maybe it will all be bett er next year.

We have a larger group of black bulls this year that I am sure you will enjoy. They have lots of hair, are bred to be easy calving, thick and sound. There are about ten bulls from fi rst calf heifers in the mix, they will be a litt le smaller but sti ll fi t the program. The Red Simmentals are consistently strong from end to end. The Red angus bulls this year are primarily sleep at night heifer bulls, made right and sti ll with enough jam to produce growthy calves. all of the bulls are backed by our ti me tested guarantee. We live in a big province and enjoy customers from end to end, we will do our best to deliver your bull to you aft er the sale, if not we will get him to a central locati on near you.

One other small change as I write this book. Calving had just begun here, it was completely soaked and in the middle of the night. I have had a serious fl u for a week and during the night was looking aft er calves, one of which had a naval hernia. aft er a couple of hours of trying to get it in, I decided to head to town for the vet clinic… I didn’t make it! I was found wandering around near Kamloops with my truck writt en off . aft er a week in the hospital, many broken ribs etc. a concussion and more I returned home. I am improving but slowly, ribs don’t mend immediately along with lung damage etc. Many great Thanks to all of the good help from my family and friends. Special thanks to my wife anja, my Mom Marge and my sister Buff , my best help ange Pawloff , Kenner and Susan, Lude Proulx, Keith Inkster and dennis Gordon. It will not quite be over by sale ti me.

Currently all breeding females and bulls receive an annual vaccinati on prior to the breeding season to protect against all the important reproducti ve viruses and bacteria including IBR, Type I and II BVd and Leptosprirosis. all calves are vaccinated at branding to provide protecti on against the important viruses and bacteria causing respiratory and clostridial diseases. Currently calves receive a modifi ed live vaccine against IBR, Type I and II BVd, BRSV, and PI3, as well as a modifi ed live bacterin against shipping fever and a killed bacterin against Histophilus somnus, Blackleg and other clostridial diseases. at weaning all bull and heifer calves receive a booster with the same vaccines and bacterins used at branding.

In late fall, all cows, bulls and weaned calves are treated with a topical endectocide to control internal and external parasites. as a further assurance of herd health, all MCC bulls in the sale have been tested and found negati ve for persistent infecti on of the BVd virus.

all bulls in the sale have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam to evaluate scrotal size and shape, semen moti lity and morphology, and structural soundness. Through my long standing veterinary relati onship with Mitchell Catt le Co., I also know that you can rest assured that each bull is out of a sound, solid, producti ve cow. Ian and anja rigorously select their herd for ferti lity, sound udders, correct feet and legs, and temperament. These cows go to the mountain with their calf each year and come back in the fall for pregnancy testi ng. Open and late cows, or cows not meeti ng Mitchell Catt le Co strict criteria, are culled – no excuses, no excepti ons.

Well the Crowfoot bull has quite a story, I picked him because he was 3rd of 108 for ribeye and I loved his dam. She later was the high selling lead off pair of their 900 lot dispersal, quite a feat! We didn’t use him a lot as a yearling but have some good calves, this one is a good example. He is a bit nervous and needs some room but will breed a ton of cows.

He is our “go to” calving ease bull, his calves are born with short gestation. We used him on all of our heifers with great success. His calves have tremendous hair coats are very sound and correct. downey has twelve sons in the sale; lots 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16.

We really wanted a Wallbanger son to add to our herd after he sold for $45000. Sweet Talker was the bull for the job, he was the high selling red bull out of Harvies sale in 2012. He has 3 sons in the sale, lots 36, 37 and 38

R PLuS 246X ROCKSTARRockstar or “Fox” as we call him is a bull we bought from R Plus in Saskatchewan for his calving ease and carcass traits. He had 17.5 inch ribeye, triple a marbling and measured 41 cm. at eleven and a half months of age and, as a bonus, was out of Marlin’s favorite old cow. Fox remains in the top 1% of the breed for both ribeye and marbling. We own both Fox and downey together with our good friends and farm help the Pawloffs; they use them on their commercial herd as well with great success.

3Y is another home raised bull that we have been using, primarily on heifers but cows as well. He was born at 72 pounds and weaned at 820, calves incredibly well and has tremendous feet and legs. His twelve-year-old dam and fourteen-year-old grand dam are still here and going strong. 3Y has seven sons to sell; lots 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62.
