NO VEHICLES ARE TO BE DRIVEN ONTO THE RIFLE RANGES. THANK YOU.

There’s Still Time to Apply for a Michigan Doe Permit

The Michigan Department of Natural Re-sources reminds hunters that the application period for antlerless deer licenses is now open and runs through Aug. 15. Hunters may apply for one license in any open Deer Management Unit (DMU) statewide; a nonrefundable $5 fee is charged at the time of application. Hunters may choose to apply for either one private-land or one public-land license online at E-License or at any authorized license agent or DNR Customer Service Center. Young hunters, ages 9-16, can purchase one junior antlerless deer license over the counter July 15-Aug. 15. No application is required. A 9-year-old must be 10 by Sept. 26 to purchase this license. Any leftover antlerless deer licenses not issued in the drawing will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Sept. 8 at 10 a.m.

August Poker Shoot Scheduled

Well there will be an Au-

gust Poker Shoot and the dealer will show up this time. It will be held on Aug. 13 at 8 a.m. and bring your favorite 22 down and try your luck at cards. There will be poison cards, wild cards and a great time. You will have your own score sheet to keep tabs on your best hand. The card faces will be facing away from you and we will move targets, so that you are not shooting at the same target twice. Say you don’t know how to play Poker? It doesn’t matter, the hand will be scored for you. You can use iron sights or scopes. It will be a “shoot what you bring” event, so no sighting rounds will be shot. Rumor is we will be shooting from the 25 or 50 yard marker. The fee will be $10 per shooter and “there will be no club guns available for the shoot”. If you are planning on attending you can call (269) 465-5026 and leave a message. If you forget to call, just stop on down anyway and we will make room for you. See you there and bring your best poker face and your best friend. See you on the rifle range. For questions or further information call the number above and ask for Gene Herrman. Aug. 13: Poker Shoot Sept. 10: CMP or Poker Shoot (TBA)

Junior Shotgun Program The shotgun program is open to both boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18. The basic purpose of the association is to provide training in the safe operation of firearms and to provide a fun environment for children to participate in a sport they might not normally have access to. Additionally, it teaches kids both maturity and responsibility. The preferred shot shells are #7 ½ and #8 shot. Each participant must provide12-guage shells, or through a grant from the NRA Foundation, 20 gauge shells have been supplied. Each participant typically uses 50 shells during each practice. Since the Junior shotgun program events occur primarily outdoors, scheduling of activities are subject to weather conditions. Cost to participate is $50 for members and $65 for non-members. The program runs Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through Aug. 30. If you have any questions, please call Carol Weller at (269) 876-7674 or email

DNR Fishing Report

St. Joseph: Perch fishing continues to be decent but the fish were scattered and were caught in 30 to 40 feet or 50 to 60 feet. Salmon fishing has been very slow. The few fish being caught were lake trout in 90 feet. Pier fishing for steelhead was slow. Those using shrimp and crawlers caught freshwater drum.

South Haven: Had slow fishing. Perch anglers struggled to find a consistent bite. Salmon fishing was very slow with only the occasional chinook caught along with a couple steelhead in 130 feet. Pier fishing was very slow with only freshwater drum caught by those putting crawlers on the bottom.

Grand Haven: Pier fishing for steelhead was slow. A couple freshwater drum were caught while casting spoons in the chan-nel. Some walleye have also been caught. Those trolling for trout and salmon caught fish 60 to 140 feet down in 120 to 220 feet with white or green flies and blue or green spoons.

Grand River at Grand Rapids: Anglers are getting some walleye and crappie. Those fishing north or south of town have caught a few walleye and catfish.

Grand River at Lansing: Has very good smallmouth bass fishing for those fly fish-ing below the North Lansing Dam. Lower water levels make it easier for anglers to wade out and cast wooly buggers. Those

Report All Poaching RAP Hotline: 800-292-7800

Poaching - The illegal taking of fish or wildlife.

Poacher - A person who hunts, traps, or fishes illegally.

Citizen concerns over unacceptable levels of poaching led to the estab-lishment of the Wildlife Resource Protection Fund. The Fund's mis-sion is to counter poaching activity in Michigan through a program called Report All Poaching (RAP). Hunters, anglers and trappers sup-port the Fund through purchase of hunting, fishing and fur harvester li-censes.
