PAINTING LIKE THE MASTERS
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10 (one session) 12:30—2:30
Landscapes: Putting it together with Composition and Color
The Old masters had it easy. Painting was seen as a craft. They had an apprenticeship or
trained in an Atelier workshop. Color choice was limited. The vivid bright colors that are found in acrylics today just weren’t available and pigment choice played an integral part in the painting
process. The pigment ultramarine blue famously used to be more expensive than gold. It was extracted from lapis lazuli, a semi-precious stone, that was used as the raw ingredient until the colour maker, Jean-Baptiste Guimet, created a synthetic alternative to lapis lazuli in France in
1828. This is why it is often referred to now as French ultramarine.
Today’s choices for colors are extensive, but in our series on Landscape painting we will work with the basic colors of ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow - light and medium, cadmium red -
medium, alizarin crimson and titanium white, and practice mixing the beautiful colors found in Autumn landscapes. Participant should come prepared with elements they want to combine
into a landscape. Sign up advised downstairs or by calling 413-648-5413.
