Core competencies for energy efficiency in Berlin and Brandenburg
Until 2020/30 Berlin-Brandenburg will be on balance between renewable energy and total consumption
(electricity) - a pioneer of "energy transition" which will achieve the Germans targets 20 years ahead.
Energy Efficiency
• Managing of different sizes of district heating systems from quarters to city areas (Berlin has the biggest district heating
system of western Europe!)
• Pilot project for the integration of electricity into the heating systems via power to heat integration
• Technologies for high level energy efficiency retrofitting with heat storage systems, heat recovery systems, Integration of
CHP, low-temperature systems (e.g. capillary tubes), geothermal energy systems for generation and storage for heat
and cold, ventilation control systems, innovative facades

Referencies for building – Berlin wholesale market (BGM)
Basics: 326,500 m² area | 300 wholesale companies | turnover of 600.000 t/a
New Investments in infrastructure of 2,3 Mio. €
5,500 solar panels on 39,000 m2 (four roofs equipped)
Total capacity of 1,600 MWh of electricity per year (equivalent of 700 households).
The BEA will operate the plant for a period of at least 20 years and feed into the electricity grid.
Comprehensive system integration to increase the overall energy efficiency and to produce electricity and heat from
renewable energy sources
Integrated concept of energy management: Further plans include the gradual conversion of the fleet to electric vehicles
and the installation of a combined heat and power (CHP) or a wood chip plant to process 1,500 t/a of generated wood
waste.

Referencies for projects – Electricity company General Electric
Basics: 800 employees | 120 jobs created in training center
New Investments in infrastructure of 22,5 Mio. € Real estate are over 25 years old and do not meet modern requirements for a location of
integrated R & D production and global sales units
Enabeling growth reserves in Berlin and other locations
Focus on smart technologies to present resulting applications in and around the site, e.g.:
Hybrid power plant
Connection of individual electro mobility with public transport services
This approach follows the Group´s predetermined target position of the concept

IKEA - Projekt heat recovery from wastewater -sytems
• IKEA uses the heat of municipal wastewater for heating and cooling the building
• a 200-meter-long pressure sewer was installed and connected to the municipal waste water system
• Through it flows a volume of wastewater from 500,000 to 1.4 million liters per hour The technology of waste
heat utilization was combined with a photovoltaic system and a rain water collection system for toilet
flushing
• CO2 savings of up to 700 tons annually –biggest system for wastewater heat recovery in Europe

Energy-efficient school building Hohen Neuendorf
The new school building was designed for the plus-
energy concept. Plus energy means that the building
produces per annual in balance more energy than it
requires for operation.
Minimized energy consumption, reduced building usage
costs while assuring a high user comfort and over the
entire life cycle energy efficient and cost-saving
performance.

•A building structure with plenty of storage capacity for free cooling
•A room concept with natural light from several sides
•A lighting concept with a presence and spatial depth-dependent lighting control,
the combined use of LED and energy efficient conventional lighting systems.
•A hybrid ventilation concept with mainly natural flow
•sustainable energy through combined use of biomass (pellet boilers and pellet CHP)
and solar energy (PV system) to reach CO2-neutrality and the objective of the plus-energy concept.

Vivantes hospitals in Berlin
Energy management for all hospitals of vivantes in
Berlin with the goal to optimize the total energy use for the
energy source natural gas, electric power, fuel oil plus
district heating and water
tasks:
•Sustainable operation of an energy information and
documentation system
•Continuous energy controlling with acquisition, analysis,
visualization, benchmarking
•Reporting, contract management and direct result
assurance
•Implementing an energy management system to support
the management in strategic and operational decisions
•Involvement in investment and construction

4: Renewal of central cooling in
the Hospital Neukölln
5: Optimization of illumination
6: Reduction of CO2 emissions
during vehicle use
7: Waste
measures
New technology center, two condensing boilers, a low-temperature boiler and a CHP.
new emergency generator, a new supply of compressed air and a new medium-voltage
supply with transformer station
old boiler house shut down and completed a fuel switch from natural gas to district
heating.
Exchange diesel fuel-powered cogeneration plant for a modern natural gas operated
one. At the same time the boiler plant is converted from fuel oil heating to natural gas
operation and the oversized old condensing boiler will be replaced.
The obsolete central cooling on the basis of absorption chillers is converted to modern
compression chillers.
Lamp exchange for particularly economical bulbs, power saving circuits are in many use
cases replaced and prospective use-operated and daylight dependent controlled by
intelligent switches. For example, lights are switched depending on the daylight by
motion or hallway and staircase lighting in sporadically used areas.
with the help of special software can the vehicle movement between the distributed
locations be optimized, saving not only time but also CO2 emissions are reduced.
Separate collection and recycling of biogenic and non-biogenic waste materials. The
biogenic materials are sustainably used as a CO2-neutral energy source. Resulting
biomass (green waste, wood, food waste, etc.) will in future be recycled carbon neutral
with a high energy efficiency.
