It has been ten months since we suspended our two publications, Yankee Shopper and the Berkshire Penny Saver. The response to revive these publications has been overwhelming, so we decided now was the right time to do just that.

We are very excited to introduce our premier issue of the Yankee Shopper and the Berkshire Penny Saver combined in to one great publication. We will be publishing monthly, the first week of every month with a deadline of the 20th the month prior. We will be distributing 10,000 copies from North Adams to the Connecticut line. Needed: Someone to Care

Springfield, Massachusetts - As the holiday season comes closer, antici-pation builds in the hearts of kids all over the nation. Thoughts of all the presents to be opened, building snowmen, holiday trips and family fun race through their minds.

Many teens have given up on such thoughts long ago. Imagine a six-teen year old girl spending the last three years in foster care. Her child-hood, spent with her mom, moving from one bad situation to the next, never knowing what tomorrow would bring. At the age of 13, she entered the foster care system when her mom was arrested. Her first few foster homes didn’t work out so well; she kept running away. She was scared and hurt. She was looking for happiness but had no idea what that meant. She finally moved in with a Dare Family Services therapeutic foster fam-ily that specialized in working with troubled teens. Although the first few months were trying for everyone involved, something finally clicked for her. She realized that this new family of hers really cared about her, no matter how much she tried to act out. They made sure that there was always food on the table. They helped her with her school work and got her interested in after-school activities. They asked what was important to her and made her feel like a real person. She started to open up to this

family, realizing that they were there for the long haul. Her foster family has legal guardianship, so when she turns 18, she doesn’t have to worry about “aging out” of the system and becoming homeless like so many other teens in foster care. This is an example of one of the few lucky foster teens who found a family to walk beside her throughout her life.

“The majority of youth who come into care are teens, and it is especially important that we provide them with the skills necessary to lead produc-tive and successful adult lives,” said Sharon Mainguy, director of home-finding for Dare Family Services. “Just because the kids are older doesn’t mean they stop needing a parent figure or a family in their lives.”

The demand for truly caring adults to become foster parents is over-whelming, especially for older foster youth. Opening your home and heart to a child as a foster parent can help heal broken young lives and restore their trust in adults. Foster parents, with the training and support of the Dare team, guide the child or teen though the healing process.

Just before Thanksgiving I met with Jamie Carr, general manager and co-owner of Otis Ridge Ski Area in Otis. Though there was no snow on the ground yet, they were getting ready for what is hoped to be a good season. Last December’s “incredibly gorgeous, but devastating” ice storm had made some of the trails unrecognizable, but cleanup has been completed and the trails will be ready to go once Mother Nature brings on the cold and snowy weather.

We met in Jamie’s office over the snack shop. Jamie’s black lab Beabs sat patiently while we talked. Jamie breeds lab puppies that later go to school to be guide dogs. What a rewarding service!

I was drawn into Jamie’s memories and the history of the ski area dat-ing back to 1946 when it opened with just one trail, making it one of the oldest ski areas in the Northeast. Jamie started skiing in the early 1970’s and later became a ski instructor. In the 1986-87 season her father and a couple of others bought the area. “A lot of people who work here are long-term, some of them 61-62 years. She added that some of the ski

camp kids are now grown and bringing their children and grandchil-dren, making it a family tradition.

She spoke of the economy, saying that people who ski will still tend to, but not as often. This will also affect stores, restaurants and other busi-nesses in the area with the trickle down. “It is hard to be so dependant on something that you don’t have any control over.”

The area offers 11 trails with 3 lifts and a wide variety of terrain. The trails are short, but nice. There is also a ski shop managed by Rick Faver. where skis, boots, boards, and warm clothing are for sale and rentals are also available. Rick has the ski shop open year round and he also runs the garden shop off season. Jamie told me that Rick’s wife used to teach skiing and now their oldest son makes snow for Otis Ridge.

A snack bar offers a spot to warm up and enjoy hot dogs, hamburgs, French fries, soda, coffee, or cocoa. Just up the hill from the ski shop is the Grouse House where breakfast is offered on the weekends and dinner is served Wednesday through Sunday. The Grouse House also offers overnight lodging at very reasonable rates. To make reservations or to get further information, call 413-269-0115.

The ski area is closed on Monday and Tuesday except on school vaca-tions, which is their busiest time.

Check out www.otisridge.com for their great website that includes all information on the ski area, ski school, ski camp, rates and the Grouse House and regular updates on ski conditions. There are also photos taken through the years of some of the ski camp kids who are now grown. Jamie enjoyed sharing her memories and hopes that more families will make Otis Ridge Ski Area their family tradition that gets passed on.
