Over 350 BHS and BMC employees visited the 2014 BMC Health Fair, held in the Private Dining Rooms in early May, stopping at numerous displays highlighting wellness initiatives, preventive services and many BMC and BHS departments. In all, 22 departments were represented at the Fair.

During the day-long event, over 40 mammograms were scheduled to help prevent breast cancer or to detect it early, 200 employees had their blood pressure measured, 175 people asked for information on donating blood to the BHS Bloodmobile and BMC Blood Donor Center, and 50 received chair massages. Occupational Health, Infection Control and the Berkshire VNA administered nearly 30 Tdap vaccines for the prevention of tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough, while providing vaccine and infectious disease education to hundreds of employees.

The Fairview Hospital Health Fair is scheduled for this fall.

BMC Health Fair Promotes Wellness and Services

Diversity efforts were on display at the Health Fair. Here, Sister Colette Hanlon, BMC Chaplain, right, discusses religious diversity.

Veronica Torres, right, Language Services Program Coordinator, has her blood pressure checked by Jennifer Nykorchuck, Wellness Services.

Carol McMahon, Tobacco Treatment Services, talks about the benefits of not smoking and programs aimed at helping people to quit.

Over 350 employees attended the 2014 Health Fair, which had an

Olympic theme and promoted health and wellness programs across

Berkshire Health Systems.

Renal Dialysis Gives Patients a Voice & a Choice

In response to patient comments about the comfort level of the chairs used in Renal Dialysis, the

team from the Dialysis Unit used Crew Resource Management to improve the patient experience and their comfort when undergoing treatment.

A Renal Dialysis Chair Fair was held in April, where the staff had chair vendors provide sample new chairs for patients and staff in order to rate them and help choose the next line of chairs to be used in Renal Dialysis. All of the participating patients received a gift for providing their time for the event and all were entered into a drawing for a supermarket gift certificate sponsored by the Friends of Renal Dialysis Foundation (FORD).

Over 80% of patients currently receiving dialysis cast votes for their favorite chair, with 75% choosing a chair from Medcor. Berkshire Medical Center is purchasing at least ten of these new chairs this year and hopes to add more in the future.

“This is one of several projects aimed at providing a comfortable, pleasant environment for our patients in the Renal Dialysis Unit,” said David Henner, DO, Medical Director of Renal Dialysis. “Patients are with us three to four times per week for at least four hours per treatment, and ensuring their comfort in the most serene environment is a priority for our team.”

In addition to the Chair Fair, the Unit received a fresh coat of paint and new art work, a result of another collaborative patient/staff/FORD initiative.

Betty Phillips, a BMC Renal Dialysis patient, seated, was one of many patients to help the Unit choose new, more comfortable chairs. She is surrounded by Renal staff, from left to right: Pete Francouer, LPN; Patty Webber, RN, BSN, CNN; Maureen Read, LPN; Ronnie Doyle-Goerlach, Unit Secretary; Dr. Henry Rose; Kathy Pease, RN, BSN; and Sheila Silsby, NP.

IslamIslam came onto the world stage around 570-632 CE (Common Era). Muslims believe that Allah (the one God) sent down his final revelation to the Prophet Muhammad. The term Islam derives from the Arabic root letters S. L. M. (Sin, Lam, Mim) which means “to be in peace,” “to be secure,” and “to be integrally whole.”

Islam means one’s conscious submission to the Will, Law, and Guidance of Allah. Therefore, a Muslim is one who patterns his or her life on the messenger prophet (Muhammad) sent by God. The Qu’ran describes Islam as the primordial or natural religion with which Allah created mankind. The religion was completed and consummated in the Qu’ran, the final and definitive Divine Writ from Allah.

Phishing is an online scam designed to secure sensitive and private information, including credit card numbers, Social Security numbers and other personal information, using emails or online ‘ads’ or notices to try and lure someone to provide that

information. Phishing scams can be obvious to many, but can also be incredibly well-crafted, designed to mimic a legitimate email in all but the smallest detail, where the link will take you. At any given time, the percent of email that is phishing, spam, or another form of malicious messaging ranges from about 50% to 75%, though most users’ spam filters block the majority of it from landing in their inboxes.

Knowing how to avoid phishing and other online scams is critical for employees and will help us to keep our IT network secure and your own home computer safe.

12 steps to avoiding phishing and other spam scams:

1. Slow down: Phishers and spammers want you to act first and think later. If the message conveys a sense of urgency, or uses high-pressure sales tactics, be skeptical; never let their urgency influence your careful review.

2. Look for errors: A great deal of spam is of poor quality with spelling, grammar and layout flaws. If you see obvious errors, you know it’s a fake. However, a lack of errors does not make the offer legitimate.

3. Research the facts: Never believe unsolicited messages offering financial solutions, hot stock tips, refinancing, etc. If the email looks like it is from a company you use, do your research. Use a search engine or contact the company directly to learn more. If the offer is for an investment, have someone at your bank, a financial consultant, or trusted advisor review the deal before handing over a dime – or your personal information.

4. Delete any request for financial information or passwords: If you get asked to reply to a message by providing your bank account, bank routing information, credit card numbers or passwords, it’s a phish or some other type of scam.

5. Reject requests for help or offers of help: Legitimate companies and organizations do not contact you to provide help. If you did not specifically request assistance from the sender, consider any offer to ‘help’ restore credit scores, refinance a home, etc., a scam. Similarly, if you receive a request for help from a charity or organization that you do not have a relationship with, delete it.

6. Don’t let a link be in control of where you land: Stay in control by finding the website yourself using a search engine to be sure you land where you intend to land. If you suspect Phishing or a scam, do not click on the link.

7. Beware of dangerous downloads: If you don’t know the sender personally and don’t expect a file from them, downloading is a mistake. Email hijacking, where spammers take over control of someone’s email, has become rampant in the wake of data breaches. Even if you know the sender, if he or she seemingly sends you an email with a download in it, avoid it and delete it.

8. Foreign offers are fake: If you receive email from a foreign lottery or sweepstakes, money from an unknown relative, or requests to transfer funds from a foreign country for a share of the money, it is a scam.

9. Scammers manipulate emotion: If you’re financially stressed, lonely, angry, sad, overly happy, frustrated, looking for romance, etc., you’re more likely to fall for phishing and other forms of fraud. Put emotions aside when evaluating phone calls, mail, email, online offers or notices.

10. Free has a price tag – and it’s usually more than you bargained for: Offers of free trial products (or free anything) are scams – and potentially phishing. Even when you don’t see a direct phishing connection, the catch is they are collecting your information, and you should never share it. If it seems too good to be true, it is.

11. Set your spam filters to high: Every email program has spam filters. To find yours on your personal devices, look under your settings options, and set these high – just remember to check your spam folder periodically to see if legitimate email has been accidentally trapped there.

12. Don’t let your guard down at work: While corporate tools help block phishing scams, they cannot catch everything. While the same anti-phishing advice applies when opening, downloading or linking to sites from email arriving in your work inbox, the stakes are significantly higher. Falling for a phish or other malicious scam does not simply impact yourself; you potentially put the whole company at risk.

Avoiding Phishing An Important Message from Information Systems

Chaplain’s Corner Why Me, God? By The Reverend Art Kaufman, BMC Chaplain

“Every nurse, doctor and employee of BMC all treated me very well. From the second I entered the Emergency Department, they couldn't do enough for me. My care was outstanding. Everyone was so kind, caring and concerned. I am sorry to say I do not remember names, but each and every person gave me 100%.” – Comment from a BMC Emergency Department patient

“My stay at BMC was a very positive one. Accommodations were excellent for orthopedic patients. The staff was wonderful and I am happy that I chose BMC for my surgery. I will be going there again for hip replacement surgery on the other side, in the near future.” – Comment from a BMC Orthopaedic Unit patient

“You’re always friendly, thorough, very professional and wonderfully staffed with competent, cheerful and excellent staff and care. Thanks to all. We have always been grateful to our hospital.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“The experience was fine. Thanks to the outstanding nursing staff, I can't tell you enough how great the staff was to me. I almost didn't want to leave.” – Comment from a BMC Telemetry Unit patient

“We want Fairview and BMC to know how much we feel about the loving care given to our daughter, who passed away. You were so caring and peaceful for our entire family. Thank you so much.” – Comment from the relatives of a Fairview and BMC patient

“I have been to BMC and never had an unsatisfactory experience.” – Comment from a BMC Laboratory Services patient

“We all recognize that your call volume has probably gone up with due to the closure of North Adams Regional Hospital, and despite that you all do a great job and you are all so very friendly and helpful and accommodating. We wanted your good work to be recognized.” – Phone message from a local physician practice to BMC Central Scheduling staff

In May, I attended a seminar on youth at risk. The speaker was Robert Brooks, PhD, and he addressed one of the issues we have all faced (or will) in the work we do here at BMC and in our own lives – the question, Why me, God? More specifically

Dr. Brooks addressed this question posed to him by a parent whose child was diagnosed with a disease that would end his life in a few short years.

“Why did God choose my son, Dr. Brooks?”

To his credit, he avoided all the clichés we so often use; “God never gives us more than we can handle.” “There’s a reason for everything.” You can probably add to the list. Dr. Brooks instead responded, “Some people get sick, some don’t, some people get injured and others never do. And we don’t always know why. I think the most important question to ask about your son is, what can I learn about this event that has intruded into our lives and what can we do about it? Those are the questions of which I can help you find the answers.”

What a caring, helpful and hopeful response. It harkens back to the metaphor I propose we use for God (Allah, Yahweh, Higher Power, etc.). God as coach. A coach who teaches us the rules of the game, helps us develop the skills we need to be the best players we can be and then sends us out to play. And sometimes we win and sometimes we lose and sometimes we get injured while playing but this coach never gives up on us, is always there for us, helping us to get up and play again. Reminding us that the most important thing is not whether we win or lose but how we play the game. That, I think is what all of you are doing every day you come to work.
