Berkeley Municipal Solid Waste Facility Tours 4/9/17 Executive Summary: There are 4 major components to the municipal solid waste system for Berkeley: Transfer Station – Operated by the City of Berkeley. Their trucks collect trash, compost, and C&D (construction & demolition materials) from residential and commercial operations. And collect commercial recycling to drop off at CCC. The city trucks (along 400-500 residents/day self-hauling) drop off these materials at the transfer station, where Urban Ore has a chance to scavenge for material, before being transferred to 18- wheelers and sent to the landfill, compost center, or C&D facility. Ecology Center – Home of the first curbside recycle collection in the nation. They own 11 trucks to pick up residential recycling in Berkeley. Initially, recycling was a 7 bin system, now they operate with a dual-stream system with a split recycling bin. They also host a variety of programs such as: the farmer’s market, store for sustainable living and recycling outreach. Community Conservation Centers (CCC) – does the manual sorting of the recyclable materials collected by the Ecology center (residential) and the City of Berkeley (commercial). Also runs the buyback program for recyclables. Every year they pay out about $1 million for buybacks. Urban Ore – a for-profit company which re-sells and recycles materials that are donated, salvaged from the transfer station, or are picked-up from outside locations. Each of these programs/companies is looking towards capital improvements to help expand and move towards the goal of zero waste. For example, the buildings at the CCC are the original buildings from the 1980s and since then the total amount of recyclables has increased dramatically without significant capital improvements.
