Editorial PP Phang President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

Gratitude – part 2 – “Interact Elocution Contest”

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” ~William Arthur Ward

Let me express my gratitude to the Organizing Chairmen, the Directors and the committee members

who successfully completed the two major projects over the past two weeks.

(This Part 2 of my message is for “Interact Elocution Contest” project)

To Past President VG Chandran, the “Chief”, we are continuously amazed by your infectious zeal in teaching and guiding the new generations. You visualized the entire project, orchestrated your committee to carry out the different roles and finally brought it into fruition, from the “kick-off” briefing by PP Charlie Chan to the semi-finals and the overwhelming success of the Finals. Thank you, Terima kasih!

To Director Jeff Yap, the “Young One”, I can truly see your enjoyment in working with the Interactors & Rotaractors. This must be the reason that you are able to maintain your youthful look! Your bountiful energy and enthusiasm has convinced many Interactors and teacher advisors to support all our club’s functions. Thank you for all those personal visits to the school principals to explain the projects and to invite the participants to the elocution contest. Without these supporters, the event would not have been so successful.

To Vice President CT Heng, thank you for being there always to support me and back me up. I truly appreciate your kind offers to take up the important roles in arranging the food, the venue, liaising with the principal, printing the mock cheques, banners etc . etc. You are the coordinator that had ensured the project runs smoothly.

To Honorary Lawrance Annies, our ever reliable conscientious timekeeper, certificate designer & printer, thank you. In your usual efficient, quiet and confident way, you have carried out your part impeccably. Kam Sia!

To Rotarian Mok Sin, thank you for providing the AV support! Nandri!

To Past President Albert Lim, once again, with so many TV stations and press people there to cover the function, it is a true testament of your effort. You are truly the PR extraordinaire!

To all the committee members, Interact Chairman George Heng, Rotarians Patrick Lee, Mok Sin, Arvin Kumar, Laura Lee; I truly appreciate all the support, the team work.

To DG Kok Beng & AG Karthi, thank you for making time to support our function. It was great to have you there!

To all the other Past Presidents & Rotarians who supported the project in one way or another, Nandri!

Again, I hope I have not left out anyone…

In Rotary Service,President RY 2010/2011

FIRST 100 DAyS

This week marks the first 100 days of the Club in RY2010/11. Congratulations to President Choy Ying and the Board of Directors for leading the Club to an eventful period!.

From the word “go” the Pudu “system” was in gear on 1st July 2010. We had a successful 44th Installation Dinner where the installation of the President and her Board was a bit different from previous years. It had been said that our Dinners were getting stale and it was difficult to get guests to attend. Thus the formal part of the Installation and speeches were quickly done with so that those attending would find it more interesting with more entertainment.

Even before the 1st July, we had a grand ILTMC at Port Dickson where 250 incoming Interact officers were given training to how to manage their respective clubs and how to be leaders. Then we had a good Rotarian-Teacher Advisers Hi Tea at the Shangrila Hotel to further the already excellent relationship with the Teachers. And in May we had a successful fund raising event at the Pavilion GSC and the amount raised was beyond expectation despite the slow economy.

President Choy Ying provided “leadership by example” leadership and the club was already in third gear by 1st July!

We had great fellowship with the sister clubs and with other clubs in the Klang Valley. We attended many of the Installation Dinners. We attended to all the Installations of the Interact Clubs under our care and the Installation Dinner of the Rotaract Club of Pudu. What a busy period for President Choy Ying and her Board of Directors!

The various services went swiftly into action as well. Besides having their monthly committee meetings they also organised various projects. We had a couple of firesides and a visit to the Jenjarom Old Folks Home. Great Fellowship at Carey Island and members and their families were happy.

We had an evening “Membership Development & Retention Night” and from this we had a couple of inductions. The 100%ers’ Dinner organised by IPP Robin Tay had a special theme of “Greening the Earth” and it was a successful event.

New Generation’s Elocution Contest amongst the 9 schools under our care was well participated and provided a lot of excitement amongst the students especially when they realized the big prize money at stake. The final in September at the PESS was well attended by students, parents, teachers and Rotarians. Well done to the Chairman PP VG Chandran and Director Rtn Jeffrey Yap!.

In September too, we got a lot of publicity from our “Green Your Community” project helmed by PP Chow Tain and in cooperation with M/S Grant Thornton, DBKL and other commercial corporation. It was well reported in the press and really complemented the effort of the Government. Again well done to PP Chow Tain & Rtn Peng Huat!.

In the meantime, we had a few PP Council meetings, two club assemblies and the regular meetings which were well attended. The club was fully functioning the first 100 days!

There is no doubt the 2nd 100 days will be just as active!

Yesterday, I was invited by President Choy Ying of RC Pudu to attend the finals of their Interact Elocution Contest. The contest was organised for all the Interact Clubs under Pudu’s wing and after a few rounds, the final was held on Saturday 25th September 2010 at SMK Perempuan Pudu. The event attracted over 300 students, parents & teachers.

As a former Interactor some 30 years ago, I remember vividly being so impressed with Rotarians attending Interact functions at my school . It was their dedication, commitment and friendliness that had made me so impressed with Rotary.

Yesterday, I saw that same feeling amongst the Interactors who attended the Elocution contest. Led by President Choy Ying & the ever youthful “Uncle” VG Chandran as the Organizing Chairman, it was

evident that the Rotarians of RC Pudu were showing that “Every Rotarian is an example to Youth”.

Thank you RC Pudu for an eventful morning.

MESSAGE FRoM CARl-WIlHElM STENHAMMAR FouNDATIoN TRuSTEE CHAIR

October 2010

SuCCESS IN A VoCATIoN MEANS GIVING – oF TIME, EXPERTISE, AND MoNEy

People join Rotary clubs as proud representatives of their businesses or professions. Hence, all club members have an obligation to represent their vocations to fellow Rotarians and exemplify the spirit of Rotary in the workplace.

People who are successful in their vocations are often well organized, not only in their professions but also in their private lives. Therefore, they are also well organized in their giving. They understand that if The Rotary Foundation runs a special fundraising challenge to match the generous donations from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, giving to the Annual Programs Fund remains as important as ever, as this is the core part of The Rotary Foundation’s financial operations. Equally important are donations to the Permanent Fund and Rotary Centers Major Gifts Initiative. The giving to the challenge must be over and above the normal and regular annual giving, and fortunately many Rotarians understand this.

Donations, however, are not necessarily money only. Many, many Rotarians give of their free time and of their expertise, which so often is a result of success in their vocation. Numerous are the doctors and nurses who help sick children, numerous are the engineers who help drill wells, numerous are the teachers who help in schools – just to mention a few.

And the practice goes back to the various vocations where it all began in 1905 – a handful of gentlemen of different vocations who came together to help others. That was the beginning of what is now Building Communities – Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.

lETTER To THE EDIToR DENMARK

Hi !

I have a confession to make. I have been around some years ago now -- to make speeches for Rotary Clubs here in Copenhagen – about the bicycling trip and so.

I have followed you by writing now and then.

The only club I ever would consider being a member in is Pudu -- which by far -- is the best club I have ever seen or heard about.

Of course my communication with you guys have shown me that my feeling come from my heart and is correct.

The other day I received a letter from Robin with Berita The weekly Bulletin – For members only –and of course I am not a member but in my heart I am.

Have a nice new Pudu year with a new president and Robin can relax now -- I hope.

Have a nice weekend.

PS I felt so welcome -- when I was there last time!

lETTER To THE EDIToR DENMARK

Ib

PS I felt so welcome -- when I was there last time!
