The Bequia Sunshine School’s annual fund-raising Auction is just over two weeks away and your donations are urgently needed! So please check in your closets and cupboards and pull out those “too-good-to-throw-away” items so they can be auctioned off to raise money for this incredibly worthy cause.
This year the auction will once again be a stand-alone event, with viewing starting at 12 noon and the Auction itself starting at 1pm sharp. A selection of handicrafts made by the students in their workshop and craft class-es will also be on sale, as will refreshments and food donated by local businesses and individuals.
All items donated will be carefully sorted and selected either for the Auction or for the massive Jumble Sale which will be held in March. The proceeds from both events go directly towards the running costs of the Bequia Sunshine School for Children with Special Needs, a privately funded institution administered by a local Board of Directors.
The Government supports the school by paying the head teacher's salary - financing the rest is up to the generosity of others! Last year’s auction totalled around EC$22,000, which together with the Jumble Sale pro-
ceeds will have covered the school's running costs for less than five months, so your support is absolutely vital.
Currently there are 29 students attending daily classes and their progress in all aspects of learning and skill-training is remarkable. The dedication of the schools’ six staff and head teacher Camille Jacobs ensures that the students are continually guided and encouraged. The students’ own enthusiasm for learning and achievement creates a very special and uplifting atmosphere in this unique school.
So if you have anything to donate to the Auction or Jumble Sale, please deliver directly to the Sunshine School (located just before the High School on the road to Spring) Monday to Friday 9am till 3pm, or to Wallace & Co. Chandlery next to The Port Hole. More details of the auction and what's on offer will be in next week's issue of Bequia This Week - out on Friday 10th.
Ask anyone who has been to a previous Sunshine School auction and they’ll tell you it’s really not to be missed – great bargains, a great cause and hugely entertaining! So make a note: Sunday 19th February is one afternoon that you should definitely NOT spend on the beach!
