TWO LETTERS OF IGNATIOS THE DEACON TO PROTONOTARIOS THEOPHILOS AND THE PATRIARCH METHODIOS OF
CONSTANTINOPLE
In his two letters to protonotarios Th eophilos and the Patriarch Methodios of Constantinople, Ignatios the Deacon, a former metropolitan of Nicaea, deposed due to his lapse into the heresy of Iconoclasm, pleads that his book – a Gospel, which he inherited from his brother, be returned to him as a lawful owner. Aft er the analysis of the two letters, and of the literary technique and allusions used by the author in these letters, it appears that Ignatios actually used the opportunity to promote himself before the patriarch as a person devote to the ideals of Iconophile Orthodoxy and the Victory of Orthodoxy which had been proclaimed aft er the year 843. In this paper an analysis of Ignatios‘s epistolographic speech is brought in comparison with several other letters he wrote both during and aft er his career as metropolitan of Nicaea.
Key words: Iconoclasm, Orthodoxy, Church, epistolography, patriarchs, Tarasios, Nikephoros, Methodios

It is already a common knowledge that Prodromos was member of the intellectual circle of Eirene Doukaina, who created and infl uenced intellectual and political networks in the Constantinople aft er the death of her husband, emperor Alexios I Komnenos. A brief summary of Th eodore Prodromos‘ career is followed by the translation of this rhetorical piece into Serbian language. Th e poem is analyzed from literary, historical and anthropological perspective, where the accent is put on the literary mimesis of Gregory of Nazianzus Funeral Oration for his sister Gorgonia, on Prodromos relation with the house of the Doukai and his special role in the promo- tion of heir alternative political discourse, as well as on the funeral oration as a crucial element of the funerary ritual and its political importance in the age of the Komnenoi.
