BEO World Travel Market


Teams represent their assigned country at an international travel fair to raise interest for and attract visitors to their country.

Presentations must cover a minimum of four of the following topics:- tourist attractions- culture- history- religion- areas of outstanding natural beauty- traditions- famous people - music, dance, performing arts- arts and crafts- famous events

Teams will be assigned a specific topic on 15 November 2012.

Penalties for non-compliance with basic rules (except time limits): Loss of 2 points on overall score of presentation

Maximum available points for competition: 72 points awarded in a total of nine categories

Length of presentation: minimum 8 minutes, maximum 10 minutes

Dress code: Costumes allowed but not required

Permitted technology: MS PowerPoint, no video or embedded video, only one song and/or dance routine is allowed during the presentation, microphones provided

Digital Revolution Keynote Presentation


In the Keynote Presentation teams demonstrate their overall understanding of key issues of the Digital Revolution and its impact on modern society.

The Digital Revolution, also sometimes called the third industrial revolution, is the change

from analogue to digital technology which has taken place since the early 1980s. .

Teams will be assigned a specific topic on 15 November 2012.

Local Media Project


As part of the preparation for the BEO the participating teams will choose a social issue which is at the heart of their school and/or community. They will plan and undertake a local media campaign combining traditional and social

media to raise awareness of this issue in their local community.

The presentation should include, but is not limited to, the following areas:• Reasons for choosing specific media channels• Organisation of the project• The project itself• The project objectives and outcomes• Your personal reflection on and evaluation of the project

Aim: to ask questions about the team’s personal experience while preparing the presentation, e.g. research methods, personal opinions, influential sources or personal experiences which helped form opinions etc.

Started by compère who will have a set list of questions to choose from for each presentation event, then opportunity will be given to the floor soon after.

Questions are intended to show an appreciation of the team’s effort and are expected to be formulated in a respectful and supportive manner.

Group leaders who pass or attempt to pass on prepared question to their students may be expelled from the venue. In repeat incidents teams may also lose 2 points of their overall score of the individual competition.

In 2013 the BEO debate is launched in a new format. Schools will be assigned roles whose views they will research and represent at the BEO International Forum. The

topic is:

The aim of all participating teams in the assembly is to formulate a joint solution. The chair will not nominate teams. All teams are responsible for their contributions.

Teams have to choose one of these two topics for their lyrics:

Schools are responsible for bringing their own karaoke version.

Musical instruments cannot be provided in the centres.

Technical support:Three hand-held microphones plus stands and a sound system which allows the playing of CDs and MP3s. The first performing team is allowed a sound check.


Length of song: minimum 3 minutes, maximum 5 minutes


Permitted technology: Karaoke version of the song on CD or in MP3 format, singing along to original tracks is not permitted, schools can choose to provide their own musical accompaniment but are responsible for their own instruments

The Creative EventsDrama Festival


Schools choose a book and adapt it, or part of it, to a short play writing their own script.

General BEO GuidelinesStudents are between 12 and 16 years old at the time of the BEO event (born between 01.05.1996 and 31.12.2001.

Students registered for the BEO must participate in at least two and a maximum of five BEO competitions, excluding the events of the BEO final.

Exceptions are possible for teams with fewer than ten students upon approval by the Senior Academic Manager ([email protected]) prior to the start of the BEO.



General BEO Guidelines

Schools will register their students for individual events via a website by 31 December 2012. (website TBA)

Schools will also provide a passport style photo of each student for the BEO Enrolment Pass.


Who are the judges?

All judges are qualified EFL or secondary school teachers.

Every effort is made to ensure that all teams are judged by the same judges in each individual competition.

Calculation of results


During performances judges take notes of their observations in relation to the judging criteria.

They aim to make the comments practical and informative so that they serve as useful feedback to the teams.

After each presentation, judges confer their views and agree upon an overall score which reflects the observations and evaluations of the judging team.

A maximum of 10 penalty points is awarded for not meeting the minimum time of the presentation.

If a team takes longer than the maximum time limit plus 30 seconds, a 5 point penalty is applied and the team is not allowed to finish the

presentation.
