During the last year, we have been focusing on designing and developing new handles for our latest collection. We have had a lot of interesting and intense dialogue at furnipart and with external design partners. The result of our joint efforts are revealed in this News013 catalogue.

The focus and trend in this collection is on long, slim aluminium handles elegantly integrated into the full length of the front of the cabinet door or drawer and on single design handles and knobs for furniture. The expression is unique and simple. It is made with furnipart’s vision in mind: the star on your furniture that adds more value to our customer’s products.

In our News013 catalogue we have highlighted our continuous commitment to improving and strengthening our product quality. For us, this is an important and strategic domain.

Product and quality manager Per Ødis Schmidt will tell you about our quality control (QC) and our work to ensure high and homogenous quality.

During 2013 we will be present at three fairs: ZOW Germany, INTERZUM Germany and SICAM Italy.

Quality - centre of attention

- for furnipart and especially for product and quality manager Per Ødis Schmidt

For two years, Per Ødis Schmidt has been responsible for the quality at furnipart in his position as product and quality manager. It is his responsibility to assure homogenous handles with a high quality level that meet furnipart’s demands for excellence. This is assured by clearly defined internal quality requirements and standards in both the development of a new handle, and in the following continuous QC.

As a first step of the QC process, we specify and measure dimensions. This is followed by a visual quality assessment of the handle.

For control dimensions, we measure five things: centre distance, length, width, height and thread depth. The measurements are compared to the technical drawings made by furnipart and used at the production facilities.

We then examine the visual aspects of the handle based on a reference sample. A reference sample is a handle chosen by furnipart to represent and show the furnipart quality standards for each product. This quality level is known and accepted by the production facility. At the QC, we use the reference sample for visual examination of colour, brightness, scratches and any other imperfections in the handle. When something is not accepted, it is registered in our database and reported immediately to the production facility in order to solve the problem and prevent reoccurrence in the future.

The latest improvement of the QC system is a new machine to test the highest possible push and pull force applied to a handle.

For some of our customers, an expanded QC is a must as final documentation for the consignment they are about to receive. At the expanded QC, we select further handles for quality documentation at furnipart’s lab. A combination of different chemical liquids is placed on the handle’s surface. The liquids are those typically used in private homes

including acetone, cleaning benzene, vinegar and concentrated liquid soap. For all materials, the chemicals are the same with the exception of wood, leather and glass. The test will show if the surface is damaged by crazing, erosion or other effects. The result of the test has to conform to certain given standards. These standards are greatly influenced by the German market - one of the most important for furnipart.

Finally, we make a “cross-cut” test to test the resistance of the varnish. A special tool is used to cut six grooves in the handle’s surface crosswise and lengthwise. An adhesive tape is applied on the grooves and then removed to check if the varnish is resistant. After the cross-cut test the handle is placed into soapy water for 24 hours. Afterwards the area where the adhesive tape has been applied on the grooves and then removed, is repeated. For further QC, furnipart is in cooperation with Dansk Teknologisk Institut (Danish Technological Institute) and TÜV Rheinland LGA in Germany. These technological test institutes are asked to supply special reports regarding corrosion, thickness of varnish and analysis of materials. Currently we are working on a form of a labelling for our handles that will show the base material, chemicals and surface treatment; not unlike the labelling of food.

As part of furnipart’s “Strategy 2015”, another project regarding colour examination has been initiated. The goal is to evaluate the colour of a given handle on a precise scale to obtain even more homogenous colours.
