Many of us have heard of Ghost Company through the years, but didn’t really know the story. Now we are hearing it first hand from one of the survivors, Bentwater resident Bob Fellers. In his own words, this amazing display of courage of our fight-ing troops is below:

After Operation New York, F Company was down to only about 50 men and was no longer considered an effective fighting force. Thus a decision had been made to use the few survivors as replacements to other companies, or we could volunteer to help set up local defenses in some hamlets. John Pabillano and I chose to be replacements and were sent to the weapons platoon

of H/2/1. F Company was now called the “ghost” company. It’s hard to believe that a company of more than 200 men could be reduced to just a few survivors after only a few moments.

The famed Freedom Flight crew showcased its talents again this year as it performed the Missing Man formation over the Fourth of July parade. The Freedom Flight performance has become a Bentwater holiday tradition and is always a crowd pleaser. Most of the crew members are former military pilots. They use their own money to pay for their fuel and even built their own planes. Since its inauguration several years ago over Lake Conroe, Freedom Flight has become a formal organization and is requested to perform fly-overs for many patriotic events and funerals. They are always happy to do so and promote patriotism. Their mission statement is “to foster

community pride and patriotism through precision formation flight exhibitions in support of community events and through missing-man demonstrations to honor all those soldiers, sail-ors, airmen and marines who have given their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy.”

This year’s flight crew was made up of Bentwater residents Sam Ward and 9 year-old grandson, J.W. Wilkerson; Richard Kardell and wife, Julia; Fred Dennis and Joe Waltz. Also flying in the Fourth of July Freedom Flight were friends of Bentwater resi-dents, Benny Irvine and Chuck Scott.

(LGA) Ladies Golf AssociationContributed by Charlsie Rogge

The Bentwater Ladies Golf Association is anticipating a lot of excitement this month, as both the Nine Hole and the Eighteen Hole BLGA Club Championships will be determined. On September 18 and 19 the Nine Holers will be vying to unseat current Nine Hole Champion, Sandy Wagner. The Big Girls will follow with their championship tournament beginning Sep-tember 20, with all golf clubs aimed at dethroning 2011 Club Champion, Diana Hennigan. Hennigan and Karen Koerner’s Senior Club Champion title is also up for grabs, as is the Super Senior Champion title currently held by Rae-Jean Young and Barbara Young. We wish good luck and cooler weather to all of the participants.

On the tails of the championships, the BLGA will hold the annual Bentwater Cup tournament where the ladies who live on the Weiskopf course will battle the ladies of the Miller Course. It is always a fun weekend with a rally party on October 5 fol-lowed by the game on October 6.

LGA activities continue this fall as many golfers will participate in Bluebonnet Interclub with events scheduled at The Village,

Augusta Pines, Pebble Creek and The Woodlands. Other LGA golfers will participate in Northwoods Interclub with events coming up at Raveneaux, Walden and Kingwood.

Not to be outdone, still more LGA ladies have been competing in the 2012 Ladies Challenge Cup with the final event sched-uled for October 15. The Nine Hole Group also participated in the Pacesetters Interclub events. They have upcoming tourna-ments at Walden and Panorama. The Nine Holers will also be hosting their second annual Bewitched Invitational Tournament on October 16.

Other BLGA events to plan for include:October 13 Beat the 2012 Champ eventNovember 6 Fall Fling Member-Guest November 27 The Santa Claus OpenDecember 1 Jingle Bell Luncheon.

I know some of the ladies have been laying low because of the heat this summer, but it looks to be a jam-packed fun for all fall for the BLGA!

Best wishes to Lou Leonard as she and John start a new chapter in their life by moving to Austin

Donna Hagan and Patti McGraw are among the ladies who took part in the Inter Club

Hello again, LCA Members. As things have been relatively uneventful on Lake Conroe and lake levels have improved to far more enjoyable levels for all of us, there hasn’t been much to report over the first half of 2012. I share a few brief thoughts to keep in touch as follows:

LAKE LEVEL: 198.94 (relative to “normal pool elevation” of 201.00..… 2.06 feet down)

INVASIVE PLANTS: Texas Parks & Wild-life reports they haven’t seen any substan-tial re-establishment of Hydrilla and very little Giant Salvinia or Water Hyacinth. They are currently completing an Aquatic Plant Survey and will report specific quantities within the month.

NATIVE PLANTS: Texas Parks & Wildlife reports “some spread” of shallow water native plants such as water willow, water hissop and water primrose. As you may recall, when the White Amur Grass Carp finished eating our Hydrilla, they moved on to feeding on our valuable native veg-etation. Many thanks to Texas Parks &

Wildlife, San Jacinto River Authority and Seven Coves Bass Club for their efforts in Lake Conroe’s Native Plant Restora-tion Project initiated in August 2011.

ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING: Lake Conroe established an advisory commit-tee approximately 5 years ago to jointly address aquatic plant management issues. Members include Lake Conroe Associa-tion, Seven Coves Bass Club, National Bass Organizations, San Jacinto River Authority and Texas Parks & Wild-life. Upon completion of Texas Parks & Wildlife’s Aquatic Plant Survey, we will meet together to discuss two topics: invasive plants and the need to treat/not treat them; and native plants and the con-tinued restoration of the diverse species needed to maintain a healthy reservoir.

TEXAS A&M LAKE CONROE STUDY: The study contracted between Montgomery County and Texas A&M University to evaluate the effects of removing water from Lake Conroe as part of San Jacinto River Authority’s Groundwater Reduc-tion Plan (GRP) is almost completed.

The study funded primarily by the LCA was to be completed by the end of 2011 but, we are assured, a final product is soon available and a Public Meeting discussing its findings will follow.

NO LCA FUND RAISING FOR 2012: Anticipating limited cash needs for 2012, the LCA is pleased to waive annual dues for 2012. We know if an emergency occurs and significant cash is required, our LCA Members will respond favor-ably and contribute to an LCA fundraiser.

As new information of interest becomes available, I’ll write again. Should you have questions or desire to review pre-vious LCA President updates, please access our website at www.lakeconroeas-sociation.com. Wishing you an enjoyable summer season on Lake Conroe.

According to Jim Hancock of the Associated Locksmiths of Amer-ica (ALOA), there has been a significant increase of fraudulent locksmiths advertising in yellow pages and newspapers.

So when we reach for the yellow pages, how do we insure we are contacting a real locksmith and not a scammer or thief ?

Here are some tips to protect yourself from a fraudster or thief:1. Get references from relatives, friends

or neighbors who have used a repu-table locksmith.

2. Avoid a firm that answers the phone, “locksmith services,” rather than with a company name.

3. Legitimate locksmiths will carry proof that they are licensed locksmiths.

4. Make sure to get a written estimate on company letterhead and a receipt after you pay.

U.S. Representative Kevin Brady to speak at September meeting

The September 5 meeting of NSRW prom-ises to be a very interesting one. U.S. Rep-resentative Kevin Brady will be the featured speaker, and he will be giving an update on legislative issues. Rep. Brady is a pro-family, pro-small business conservative representing the 8th District of Texas in the U.S House of Representatives. He holds key leadership posts in Congress including Deputy Whip and top Republican on the Joint Economic Committee. He is a senior member of the House Ways & Means Committee, which is considered by many to be the most powerful committee in congress with jurisdiction over taxes, health care, social security, medicare, international trade and welfare.

Prior to his election to Congress, Brady worked as a chamber of commerce execu-tive for 18 years and served six years in the Texas House of Representatives where he was named one of the Ten Best Legisla-tors for Families & Children. In 1994 he was named one of Five Outstanding Young Texans.

The NSRW meeting will be held at Bent-water Country Club beginning with reg-istration at 10:45 a.m., followed by a short meeting, lunch and the speaker. Reserva-tions are required and should be made by noon on September 3.

There is a controversy over these water-loving creatures seen at the creek on Bentwater Drive near the country club. Whatever they are, they are gathering a crowd of onlookers as they happily splash in the waters after recent rains.

Bentwater’s Fourth of July parade was as festive as always. Residents pulled out all the stops as they decorated their cars, golf carts and bicycles. Participants gathered at the Park in the Meadows and then paraded all the way to the Fitness Center. They put on quite a show for residents who chose to pull out a lawn chair, sit back and enjoy the festivities.

While all participants showed their patriotism, ten were recognized for their top-notch job in showing off the red, white and blue.

On an undisclosed Monday afternoon in July, there was a secret meeting of the Pink Tee Society on an undisclosed golf hole in Bentwater. As you can see from the pic-ture, it is all very secret and we try to make it low key. On this day, Bentwater resident Janita Love, center, was

inducted into this ancient society; she turned 65, making her an honorary member. She was naturally sworn to secrecy. We did have a bit of a problem and had to stop Don Buford, who was passing by, to open our champagne bottles (they were the small ones.). Darn, I knew we forgot something - we didn’t swear him to secrecy!

He attended with pride, earning an aeronautical engineering degree and continuing to flight train. Today, Major Jonathan King serves as an Air Force pilot. Although most North Shore Republican Women members were resting up in July for the work coming up surrounding the fall election, Leona Frank and Stacey Buick were busy decorating a golf cart for the Bentwater 4th of July parade. Leona, in her tutu adorned Republican elephant costume, was a trooper, braving the heat to represent NSRW. She was named “hottest chick” of the parade. “It was so much fun,” Leona insisted.

Every property in Bentwater is special. Special because

it is someone’s home, dream or entre to an unparal-

leled country club lifestyle on Lake Conroe. Yet, certain

properties stand out because of their premium loca-

tion, natural beauty, or other special attributes that

set them apart from the rest. “We feel that this is a key

distinction between Bentwater and other gated golf

course developments. Some of Bentwater’s most

beautiful and unique land was intentionally reservedd

for the final offering of homesites. We’ve also worked

with the Country Club to develop some of the most

enticing membership and sales incentives we’ve ever

been able to offer. We have exclusive membership

incentives for both property owners and prospective

buyers alike. The Bentwater Sales Center is the only

source for these unique homesites and membership

incentives,” said Steve Seay, Director of Sales and Mar-

keting. “Bentwater is celebrating our 25th anniversary

this year and we felt it was a perfect time to make

these opportunities available.”

Below is just a sampling of the unique opportunities available through the Bentwater Sales Center.

Country Estate Homesite (61-02-03): This homesite is located in a beautifully wooded section near Bentwater's west entrance. As part of the 25th Anniversary Homesite Celebration, the Bentwater Sales Center is offering this specially selected home-site with a complimentary Grand Pines golf membership. The homesite is priced at $64,990.

Mr. Seay further stated, “This homesite is only available through the Sales Center, but we have it listed on major real estate web-sites in the Houston area so we expect it to go quickly.”

This anniversary offer waives the normal initiation membership fee, effectively offering the purchaser a $65,000 savings on a Country Estate Homesite in the most prestigious gated com-munity on Lake Conroe.

Golf Estate Homesite in Club Creek Estates (62-01-13): This one of a kind homesite is just a short stroll to the country Ccub and boasts a spectacular three fairway view across the #9, #10, and #18 holes of the Weiskopf course. The rare combination of view and location sets this homesite apart from nearly any other golf course property in Bentwater. Located in the beautifully developed Club Creek Estates, the Bentwater lifestyle is at your fingertips with the main club house, Sports Club, tennis center,

swimming pool, and golf practice facility all within short walk-ing distance. The view alone clearly says; "Bentwater saved the best for last." For pricing and membership information call or stop by the Bentwater Sales Center today.

Lake Front Homesite in Bentwater Bay Estates (82-01-08): Located in one of Bentwater's most sought after new neigh-borhoods, this homesite offers a private and serene lifestyle for the water front owner. Bentwater Bay Estates offers a highly desirable location adjacent to the yacht club and marina and is enhanced by an “old world” Mediterranean theme. The neigh-borhood’s unique style is reflected in a dramatic gated entry paved in cobblestone and highlighted by the hand carved Can-tera stone fountain and extensive landscaping. This homesite offers the prospective buyer a heavily wooded lake front location coupled with an unparalleled membership offering. For pric-ing and membership information call or stop by the Bentwater Sales Center today.

Bentwater property owners can acquire a $2,000 club credit when a referral purchases one of the unique homesites described above, or for any new Developer homesite. The credit offers a great way to entertain friends, purchase a new set of clubs or enjoy more dining experiences at the club.

For a limited time property owners can earn a $50 club credit just for referring a friend, family member or business associate who tours Bentwater with a Bentwater Sales Center representa-tive. As with the $2,000 referral credit, the $50 Club credit may be used for dining and merchandise.

Beginning their journey in Prague, Czech Republic, the group then visited the famous 13th century town of Cesky Krumlov in Southern Bohemia en route to Vienna, where they boarded a river boat on the Danube and traveled all the way to the Black Sea.

Along the way they enjoyed visits to Budapest, Mohacs and Pecs (Hungary), Vukovar (Croatia), Belgrade (Serbia), Veliko-

In addition to classical concerts in Prague and Vienna and folklore/wine festival entertainment in Hungary and the Bal-kan countries, the group experienced a total immersion in the Roman, Medieval and Ottoman history, architecture and culture of this unique and spectacularly scenic region.

Six year-old Demi started playing golf before she could read. Like any child, some days she’s a little more focused than others. “Sometimes she prefers watching SpongeBob over practicing, but I’m a strict mom - SpongeBob can wait,” said Alexandra Hicks.

This was Demi’s 2nd year participating in the Summer Golf Camps and she loved it!

“Golf director, Mark Massengale, is not only a great coach, he has the patience of a saint. He knows how to talk to kids and most importantly, he passes on to them the love of golf and sportsmanship,” added Hicks. Hicks admits she can turn into a

competitive mom who just wants her child to make the perfect putt. Then Massengale’s experience and wise advice comes in. “He has explained to me that at this age, children need to get used to playing the game and eventually they will fall in love with it,” she said.

Demi may or may not become a pro golfer, but when her mom asked what she wanted to give up: ballet, piano or golf, she stated "I want to play golf and nothing else."

With a pro like Massengale and the gorgeous golf courses that Bentwater has to offer, young Demi cannot wish for a better situation!

She’s all smiles!
