Anyone who knows Bentwater resident Terri Jaggers knows her as a woman who is dedicated to the causes that are

close to her heart. One such cause is finding permanent, loving homes for foster children in Montgomery County. Her focus and determination through her position as board president with Child Protective Services in Montgomery County has now gained her national recognition for her work.

The Congressional Coalition on Adoption recognized Jaggers with a prestigious Angel in Adoption Award in Washington D.C. on September 12. Congressman Kevin Brady presented Jaggers with the award. She was in good company as several celebrities were also recognized, including actress Katherine Heigl and husband, Josh Kelley, Christian recording artist Ste-ven Curtis Chapman and PEOPLE magazine.

“This has been such an amazing time for me,” said Jaggers. “But it is really an award for Montgomery County because what we do couldn’t happen without everyone working nicely together.”

Montgomery County is ranked number one in Texas for foster care adoptions. Seven years ago Jaggers took charge of National Adoption Day in Montgomery County and two years ago helped create the county’s Adoption Fair.

“We set up a fair for foster children and interested parents. The potential parents come and watch the children play and interact with them and then have an opportunity to meet with case work-ers and learn more about these amazing children,” said Jaggers.

In its first year, the Adoption Fair saw a 92 – percent success rate. Nineteen of 21 foster children were placed in permanent, loving homes.

Each year Montgomery County and the City of Conroe also hosts a National Adoption Day Festival where children and

their parents celebrate in downtown Conroe after consummat-ing their adoptions.

“Montgomery County has done an amazing job and I feel very blessed God has given me the opportunity to be a part of all of this,” said Jaggers.

Jaggers has something else to show off these days: a crown from the United America National beauty pageant. Jaggers com-peted in the pageant in Austin in June and won. After winning the Mrs. Texas United States pageant in 2005, she realized how the pageant world really opened doors for awareness of issues. So when a friend asked her to compete in another pageant this summer, she decided to give it a shot.

At 52 years-old she said she didn’t expect to win, but is now thrilled as this crown will help her bring more attention to foster care and other causes such as breast cancer awareness, Wounded Warriors and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) projects.

BLO – Bentwater Ladies Organization

friendsAntiqueThe Antique Friends group is back in full swing planning fun ways to socialize while they shop for treasures. The group’s September trip took them to the Tomball area where they visited numerous antique shops and enjoyed

a great lunch. There’s a lot of fun in store this fall. If anyone is interested in joining the group, you may call Lynn Guilbault at 936-597-8851 or Dee Soderman at 936-597-4388.

Fall has brought a new beginning to the Bentwater Ladies Organization. Starting in September our luncheons changed to the second Thursday of the month. Our September meeting started off with entertainment from the Texas Guitar Quartet, which was fabulous. Their music brought a standing ovation from the ladies.

During the luncheon we welcomed many new members who have moved to Bentwater over the summer. The new residents attended the Newcomer Wine and Cheese party that was also held in September. Michelle Christe opened her home for the party, and it was a great success. Dawn Cleboski, our POA general manager, gave a slide show explaining life in Bentwater. John Stebbins, our Bentwater general manager, was there to welcome the new residents to Bentwater.

Our luncheon program on October 11 will feature Tianna Hall, a well-known Houston jazz singer and recording artist. Tianna is a two time Grammy recognized jazz vocalist who began her jazz career in 2004 after working professionally in music theater and opera for years. Her repertoire includes jazz standards, swing and bossa novas from the Sinatra era.

Other events in October include the gambling and golf trip to Coushatta for our “Ladies Get Out of Town” trip with 80 of your closest friends. Two buses take us over and back, and of course we will play bingo and have lots of great conversations! Linda Gent has arranged a golf tournament for the golfers on Wednesday when we arrive. The rest of us will work out our arms in the casino! We leave on Wednesday, October 24 at 8:00 am and return on Thursday, October 25 at 4pm.

Bric-A-Brac Bazaar has returned to the Country Club this year. It will be on Saturday, November 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Jane Hough has lots of new vendors and expects large crowds to begin their holiday shopping. If you would like to volunteer to help or need more information, contact Jane Hough at 936-597-5053.

The bus trip to the Nutcracker Market will be leaving promptly at 8:00 am on Friday, November 9. This is a fabulous day of shopping, and the bus remains at the entrance so you can store all your packages while you shop. Breakfast snacks and beverages will be served on the bus and on the return trip you can celebrate your purchases with a glass of wine. If you are

interested in going, contact Anna Richards at 936-597-8935 or Karen Hamilton at 936-597-5328. Seats are going quickly, but you might be lucky and get on board the shopping express.Looking ahead, the BLO Christmas Dinner Dance will be held on Friday, November 30 and Saturday, December 1. And you won’t want to miss the BLO Charity Holiday Home Tour on December 5 and 6. Watch for more information about these two events next month.

We will also be baking cookies for the Bentwater staff, an annual gift to those who serve or assist us on a daily basis. So fire up those ovens and start baking-we will need about 200 dozen cookies to fill all of the boxes! The fun happens on Mon-day, December 3 in the Harborview Room where we will pack approximately 50 shirt and robe sized gift boxes with home-made goodies. Then that afternoon they will be delivered to the different Bentwater departments. Each year we receive notes of appreciation for these treats.

The year may be winding down, but the fun never stops in Bentwater, especially with so many fun BLO events.

The Bentwater Music Group participated in its ninth program at the home of Frank Husband recently. Performers shook off their nervousness and played a varied and enjoyable program. Since its inception five years ago, the group has added new members and new instruments. Originally, only pianists performed, but we have added guitar (Mike Miguelino), clarinet ( Jim Rust), accordion (Mike Crook) and trombone (Charles Caillouet).

The increased size of the group requires that we now have an intermission. This change and reducing the number of compo-sitions individuals play will still allow us to add more members. And we would very much like for others to join our group and

participate in our music evenings. The next performance will be in late November at John and Linda Prince’s home. We have had two programs each year and our next will be our 10th.For those who might be interested, our “rules” are few. Each member must play and his or her spouse can attend the pro-gram. Each participant is asked to bring a dessert or an appe-tizer. The host provides wine and other drinks. Little wine is consumed by players before performing… a drawback to being on the program after intermission!

For more information about the music group, please contact John Prince at 936-449-4345 or [email protected].

When Bentwater resident David Clements retired from corpo-ration America he picked up a camera. It was something that felt comfortable to him since his father, who is now 91 years-old, has always been an avid amateur photographer. Clements, however, is no amateur. Over the past 10 years he’s had count-less opportunities to take photos of musicians, rodeo cowboys and politicians, even President Obama when he visited Hous-ton.

He recently had the opportunity to photograph music legends Rod Stewart and Stevie Nicks at the Toyota Center in Houston.

“It has been an incredible journey. Photography has allowed me to do things I would have never otherwise had the opportunity to do,” said Clements.

While Clements is a professional photographer, he often finds himself taking photos for free, as he has a soft spot in his heart for charities. He is currently working with country music artist and friend Kevin Black, brother of Clint Black, in fundraising efforts for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. Black’s daugh-ter lost her life to Rett Syndrome when she was only 16 years-old. IRSF is a non-profit organization that funds research for treatments and a cure for Rett Syndrome. If you are looking for an opportunity to give back, Clements asks that you learn more about Rett Syndrome by visiting spendingtimeendingrett.com

Editor’s note: All photographs of the Bentwater Summer Din-ner Dance in this publication are the complimentary works of David Clements. We thank you!

Montgomery County Crime Stoppers works with area law enforcement agencies, the news media, and members of the pub-lic to publicize and gain intelligence on felony crimes occurring in Montgomery County and to assist in the apprehension of felony fugitives who are wanted or residing in Montgomery County.

The non-profit organization offers a cash reward to anony-mous callers who telephone the Crime Stoppers hotline with information, which leads to the arrest and indictment of people responsible for felony offenses.

If you have a tip that can help put a criminal behind bars, call the Crime Stoppers Hotline: 1-800-392-STOP (7867)

Montgomery County Crime Stoppers doesn’t stop there in try-ing to keep families safe. Its Kid Print program visits local busi-nesses and fingerprints children at no cost. This gives parents quality fingerprints of their children to be given to law enforce-ment in the event the child ever goes missing.

Everything Crime Stoppers does to keep you safe costs money. If you would like to make a donation, visit the Crime Stop-pers website at montgomerycountycrimestoppers.com for more information.

Bentwater is represented on the board of directors by Bentwater POA General Manager, Dawn Cleboski, and Bentwater resi-dent Ron Hicks.

Dear Property Owner:

As of August 31, 2012 there have been two confirmed reports of West Nile Virus among Bentwater Property Owners. Montgomery County Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Meador has informed the POA that it will be spraying Bentwater for mosquito control on a weekly basis in September and as needed beyond that time.

Although the county is doing what it can to help keep you and your family safe, please read the following safety tips so you can help protect yourself.

We will also take this opportunity to remind you of the precautions you should take in case we are threat-ened by a hurricane. Remember, hurricane season lasts until November. We encourage you to take the time to read this article and to save it for future reference. You and your family are Bentwater. We are providing these plans, programs and resources for your benefit.

Best Regards, Dawn Cleboski

MessageGeneral Manager's

Mosquito UpdateAs you may be aware, Montgom-ery County Commissioner Mike Meador provides mosquito spray-ing for precinct one in which Bentwater is located.

Meador announced that his office will now be spraying once each week for an undetermined amount of time. His office will continue to monitor the mosquito situation and make appropri-ate adjustments to the program as needed.

Commissioner Meador’s recommendations: • Remainindoorsasmuchaspossibleduringearlymornings,

late afternoons and early evenings as this is the time that mosquitoes are most active.

• Wearprotectionintheformofappropriateclothingandmosquito control products.

• Usemosquitocontrolproductswhenusingpatios,decksandporches.

He stated that although there is no known method of total pro-tection against West Nile Virus, the above referenced precau-tions are highly recommended.

Ideas for you to Prepare a

STAY or GO PLAN

EMERGENCYPREPAREDNESS

Bentwater

Prepare A Family PlanDecide now if you will evacuate early or remain in your home. Prepare accordingly. Communicate your plan in advance with your extended family and coordinate a meeting site.

1. IF YOU GO (EVACUATE):Leave as soon as possible. Do not wait until traffic is so heavy that you run the risk of being stranded on the roads.Advance Preparations for evacuation:a. Medications and Eyeglasses - Secure adequate supply of

prescriptions, medications, eyeglasses and other essentials. Take a first aid kit, including mosquito repellant, with you.

b. Home-Appliances - Empty your refrigerator and freezer, leave doors

open.-Utilities - Turn off utilities.-Furnishings - Move all outside furniture and other outside

items into garage or tie them down. Leave propane tanks outside and securely tie them down.

-Boats - Tie your boat securely to your dock using lifting rings, not cleats, to dock pilings, not cleats on dock.

-Vehicles – Park any remaining vehicles in garage and lock garage door with slide lock or chain.

- Drainage – Remove obstructions to drainage between houses. It should be free and clear of any items in order to for storm water to drain properly. Flooding often can be traced back to this issue.

-Notify a neighbor who is remaining that you are evacuating and provide emergency contact numbers.

c. Vehicle – Leave with a full tank of gas in your vehicle. Gas may not be readily available. Take an empty gas can. Take a vehicle emergency kit with you, including spare tire, battery charger, flash lights, pillows and blankets, reflective vests, small tool kit, etc.

d. Food and Water – Take ample supply of non-perishable food and water in your vehicle. A cooler would be conve-nient. Food, water and personal articles may not be readily available. Include non-scented bleach and empty gallon

containers to mix 8 drops of bleach to one gallon of water to purify. Include trash bags.

e. Children – Take sufficient personal articles and diapers, as well as games and toys that do not require electricity for entertainment.

f. Cellular Phone – Take cell phone with vehicle connection and/or additional batteries.

g. Cash – Take a sufficient amount of cash in small denomina-tions with you, as credit cards may not be usable due to lack of electricity.

h. Destination – Plan your destination. If possible, plan to evacuate as far from the coast as possible. Areas such as Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio, Lufkin and other heavily populated areas will be overcrowded with evacuees.

PETSTake your pets with you if you evacuate. Prepare a list of family, friends, boarding facilities, veterinarians and “pet friendly” hotels that could shelter your pets. Take all medications, vaccination records, one week supply of food, bottled water, litter, and plastic bags to dispose of litter or pet waste, collar, leash and ID tags. Leaving your pets behind may result in them being lost, injured, or even worse. For additional information call Montgomery County Animal Control at 936-442-7738 or 281-689-3133.

2. IF YOU STAY: Bentwater Property Owners Association (POA)170 Hillsborough Drive West will be the Command Center Emergency Operations Center during storms.

Information and communications from neighbors, MUD 18, governmental organizations, and other resources will be avail-able at this site.

All CERTs are invited to report to the Command Center dur-ing emergency conditions.

CERTs - There are more than 30 trained CERTs, Community Emergency Response Team, members in Bentwater. A program developed in part by Homeland Security, it is now administered by Citizen Corps. CERT and Citizen Corps were transferred to the Office of Domestic Preparedness (now the Office of Grants and Training) in August 2004.

This program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and res-cue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using

the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. They are easily recognizable in their green uniforms and possess CERT identification. If you are interested in becoming a CERT, please contact Dawn Cleboski at [email protected].

Electricity or telephone service may not be available for a week or longer. Trees and power lines may be down creating roads impassable for unknown time periods.

If you need electricity to stay alive or if you have medical issues, are over 65, are pregnant or have children, you should consider evacuating early.

a. Medications and Eyeglasses - Secure adequate supply of prescriptions, medications, eyeglasses and other essentials. Have a first aid kit available.

b. Home- Appliances – Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed

and use food as quickly and safely as possible. When the power is out for an extended period of time, dispose of food and leave doors open.

- Utilities – Electricity and telephone systems may be out of service for a week or longer. Water and sewer are planned to continue to operate except during extreme conditions, as generators are in place in most areas.

- Furnishings - Move all outside furniture and other outside items into garage or tie them down. Leave propane tanks outside and securely tie them down. Have rope and heavy plastic sheeting or tarps available.

- Gutters, Windows and Doors- Make sure gutters are free of debris to allow unobstructed water flow. Strengthen your door latch system, consider adding surface mounted side bolts. Essential supplies to consider include tarps, pole saw, roof cement, tie-down rope, plywood, power saw, cordless drill, work gloves and a ladder. A wet/dry vacuum may come in handy.

- Boats - Tie your boat securely to your dock using lifting rings, not cleats, to dock pilings, not cleats on dock.

- Vehicles – Keep gas tanks full and park vehicles in garage. Have vehicle emergency kit with you, including spare tire, flash lights, blankets, reflective vests, etc.

c. Food and Water – Have ample supply of non-perishable food. During a power outage, use your perishable food before it spoils. A cooler full of ice would be convenient for the first few days when without power. Food and personal articles

continued...

may not be readily available. Trash bags are prized items. Water and sewer will continue to operate, even for long peri-ods, as generators are in place.

d. Flash Lights, Lanterns and Batteries – Gather and check all flashlights and battery-powered lanterns. Secure an ample supply of all sizes and types of batteries.

e. Cellular Phone – Have cell phone with vehicle connection and additional batteries.

f. Radio and TV – Have battery operated radio and TV avail-able. Tune to 99.7 FM or other emergency frequencies for announcements. STAY INFORMED.

g. Generator – You may wish to consider the purchase of a portable generator with extension cords or stand-by genera-tor (approval of a stand-by generator requires Architectural Control Approval). Do not operate a generator inside your home.

h. Cash – Have sufficient amount of cash on hand as credit cards may not be usable due to lack of electricity.

i. Valuables and Important Records – Place all of your valu-ables and important records in a waterproof container and store in the safest place.

j. Safe Room – You may wish to designate a specific room in your home as a safe room.

When we decide it’s time to purchase a new vehicle, most of us choose a make and model and head to a dealership. Bob and Donna Shepherd used to do the same thing, but not any more.

When Donna was ready to buy a new Volvo XC60, she and Bob hopped on jet and headed to Sweden.

“We were told that Volvo offers a great delivery program when you purchase a vehicle right from their manufacturing plant in Sweden,” said Donna. “And they

really do! We decided what we wanted and they customized the vehicle for us. Volvo then paid our round trip air fare tickets, paid to ship the car to the U.S., put us up in the Radisson and treated us like royalty.”

When the Shepherds got to Sweden they were given a tour of the Volvo plant and had the opportunity to see another vehicle like the one they were purchasing being put together.

Volvo even offered the Shepherds 15 days of free insurance so they could take their new vehicle on a road trip before it was shipped to the U.S. They took the car

maker up on the offer and headed out for a ten day excursion.

“We drove through Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands before we dropped it back off to be shipped here,” said Donna.

The couple then extended their vacation and took a Baltic Cruise- what better way to pass the time while your new Volvo is being shipped?

The Shepherds are now enjoying their new Volvo and have great memories of how they bought it and got it home.

Do you like supporting charities, espe-cially during the holidays? Do you like seeing how others decorate their homes to inspire you to decorate yours? Do you like seeing the inside of homes you have admired from the golf course or water?

If you answered yes to any of these ques-tions, you will want to put the 2012 Bentwater Holiday Home Tour on your calendar! This year’s committee of BLO members Pat Wagner, Laurie Burtch , Deb Austin, Connie Stout and Kimi Poole is working hard to make this the best tour ever.

The tour is December 5 and 6 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm. The tickets can be

purchased at the Country Club front desk starting November 1. They will also be sold at the November BLO luncheon. Each ticket allows a one time visit to each home and can be used either night. The price of the ticket is $15 if purchased in advance and $20 the day of the tour.

Each homeowner designates a charity they support. The proceeds from the ticket sales are divided equally between the charities. In addition, the Montgom-ery High School art students are sup-ported as they provide a pencil sketch of the home to the homeowners.

If you would like to volunteer to help guide people through one of the houses, please contact Pat Wagner at (936) 597-3339.

home tourHolidayLacey Binding did not know what to think when she received an invitation in the mail to audition for the Miss Teen Houston pageant. But after a great deal of thought, she and her mother decided she should give it a shot. In March 2012, Lacey auditioned, earned a spot in the pageant and then fin-ished 2nd runner up.

Soon after, she was invited to take part in the National American Miss Teen pageant in Dallas where she finished 3rd runner up.

Her success in these two pageants is now creating new opportunities for Lacey, including the chance to participate in the National All American Miss Teen USA finals pageant in Hollywood in November.

“It makes me feel really good. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but

everything has been so positive. I have experienced a lot bullying in the past and this has really helped my self confidence,” said Lacey. “I like being a role model and having the responsibility to give back to my community.”

“She has really learned a lot about respect-ing herself and respecting others as well as how to interview and communicate with adults. Pageants sometimes have a negative connotation, but we couldn’t be happier with this pageant system,” added Lacey’s mother, Tera Binding.

Lacey is looking forward to representing her hometown in Hollywood and see-ing where this experience leads her. The trip however will cost her family close to $4,000. Lacey is hoping for sponsors and ideas of how she can give back to

her community and earn money to help pay for her trip to Hollywood. We wish Lacey the best of Luck!

TMJ or the temporomandibular joint, may be the ultimate cause of your never ending, distressing

headaches. With a complete TMJ exam from Dr. Jess N. Legg, III, we will be able to get you one step

closer to a headache free life!

TMJ stands for “temporomandibular joint,” or jaw joint. These are the small joints in front of each ear that

attach the lower jaw to the skull, and happen to be the most complex joints in the entire body. The area of the face where the TMJ is located is an intricate network of bones, including the teeth, muscles, and nerves. Because of this, TMJ (dysfunction) conditions affect many areas of the body, from the top of the head in migraine-like

headaches to numbness or tingling in the arms and pain in the neck or shoulders.

The homesites featured below include a Grand Pines golf membership and through an exclusive special arrangement with Bent-water Yacht and Country Club, the Grand Pines member-ship initiation fee will be waived. This extraordinary pro-motion offers the buyer a $65,000 savings on a homesite in

In order to replenish the original donation from an anonymous donor to the Bentwater Scholarship Endowment Fund, resi-dents got together for an exciting fundraising event at the Bent-water Country Club.

The Scholarship Summer Dinner Dance was a night of great food, conversations and twirling across the dance floor.

The presidents of Sam Houston State University and Lone Star College Montgomery made short presentations about the scholarship foundation, which has been established in associa-tion with the two institutions. This foundation fund has been created to provide financial aid to employees of the Bentwater POA, the Bentwater Yacht and Country Club and Bentwater

Sales Corporation as well as their spouses, children, grandchil-dren, and/or legal dependents seeking higher education. The elected trustee and advisory board of Bentwater Property Own-ers Association will serve as criteria advisors.

The Scholarship Summer Dinner Dance was organized to increase awareness of the program and perhaps raise additional funds while dancing the night away. A generous $100,000 seed donation from a Bentwater property owner who wishes to remain anonymous has already started the music playing. Any monetary or financial help will be greatly appreciated.

Look for other exciting fundraising events in the future to ben-efit the Bentwater Scholarship Endowment Fund.

The time has come to start clearing out your home of unwanted items for the annual Bentwater Trash & Treasure Sale scheduled for Saturday, October 20, start-ing at 8 a.m.

The cost of a regular size booth (25’ x 25’) this year is only $15.00 for property own-ers and $40.00 for outside vendors.

Booths are going quickly, so you’ll want to act fast. To reserve a booth, contact the POA office at 936-597-5532.

Property owners renting a booth will receive two free booth worker tickets when they show up to set up their trea-sures, starting at 6:30 a.m. Additional tickets will be on sale for $2.00 each.

The POA is furnishing the land; you furnish the tables, chairs, tents and any decorations. Every booth is a premium site; there are no bad locations.

If you choose to rent a regular size booth, you may bring your vehicle to the booth

to unload, and then you will be directed to park in the designated parking spot across the street. If you have a pick-up truck or trailer in which you will be displaying your goods, ask for a jumbo booth (30 x 32).

A concession tent will have drinks and snacks available for sale at reasonable prices.

If you sell large items and the purchaser needs information on how to pick-up the

items, a friendly and courteous POA staff member will be ready to help.

At the end of the event, if there are items that you wish to donate to a charitable organization, you can leave them on the ground near your booth and the POA staff will take care of it for you.

We hope to see you there as you turn your trash into someone else’s treasure.

We may have left our hearts in San Francisco, but we surely left our money in Napa, California. This past June, traveling bud-dies, Shirley and Don Parrish, Dave and Sue Helterbran and Doug and Charlsie Rogge headed west to the US Open and then on to Napa and Sonoma for a little wine tasting. We had tickets for the final round of the golf tournament so we spent a couple of days seeing the sights first. Then it was on to Napa.

This time we opted for private limo tours of small boutique wineries in Napa and Sonoma. We began our first day of touring at the home of Mark and Candace Jessup, owners of J Gregory Wines. We sat around their dining room table, tast-ing their wines and munching on some sweet breads, fruit and cheese. Next we headed to Gabrielle Collection. Set back from the roads and surrounded by vineyards and old oak trees was the large white home of Gabrielle Leonhard, owner of Gabrielle Collection. There we enjoyed trays of sliced meats and cheeses, olives, breads and crackers that were paired with their many dif-ferent wines.

Our last stop of the day was atop Howell Mountain. The win-ery was Haber Family Wines, a relatively new winery with very limited production. After a short tour and lots of oohing and aahing from the back porch overlooking the vineyards and the valley below, we were ushered inside where we enjoyed wines, some pleasant conversation and delicious food. We headed back to our hotel where our driver tacked on an additional one and a half hour of charges; it was hard to tear ourselves away from the wines!

Sue Helterbran is a champagne fan, so we began our Sonoma tour at Domaine Carneros, where we tasted at least five dif-ferent champagnes. What a way to start the day! I believe Sue will be expecting champagne shipments every couple of months-thanks, Dave.

Our second stop was at Robert Hunter Winery, a spectacular site which featured gardens and grounds designed by the late landscape designer, Thomas Church. We began our tasting with

Contributed by Charlsie Rogge

some more cham-pagne. Robert Hunter Winery now produces chardonnay, pinot noir and cabernet wines as well as brut de Nois.

Our last stop of the day was at Deerfield Ranch Winery where we stepped into a vintage Napa home. We were greeted by PJ Rex, a ball-of-fire in an 80 pound package. We enjoyed hearing the story of how she and her husband Rex got into the wine business. Soon we were joined by their vine-yard dog, a giant poodle, and PJ’s husband, Rex. We tasted quite a few of their wines and enjoyed the afternoon, emptying several bottles.

After arriving home from our trip, we relaxed at the dinner table with some of our “house” wine. We suddenly realized that our “two-buck chuck” would not cut it anymore. It was a great trip with good friends, great wines and great memories; who could ask for more?

Deerfield Ranch: The Helterbrans, Rogges and Parrishes enjoyed sitting at the table in the home of PJ and Robert Rex while tasting and discussing their wines. PJ, right, tells the group about her family of wines and how she and Rex got into the wine making business.

Sue and Dave Helterbran enjoying the Wine Country lifestyle.

Charlsie and Doug Rogge, Kurt Hemenway of Robert Hunter Winery, Shirley and Don Parrish and Sue and Dave Helterbran pause for a picture before lunch after touring the small winery located on a former a horse-breeding ranch in Sonoma.

BENTWATER Creates Website

Becky Ramirez needed assistance com-pleting a laminate flooring project in her home. Bentwater United Way volunteers recently completed the flooring and baseboard installation. A second day of volunteering included painting for Becky and her special needs son, Eric, whom she cares for at her Conroe home.

Eric attends Bridgewood Farms where Bent-

water held a Day

of Caring in 2011. Stan Hemmeline who coordinated the flooring and paint-ing project for the Ramirez home said, “Bentwater volunteers were great; Becky couldn’t quit thanking everyone.”

Volunteers included Stan Hemmeline, Dave Hemmeline (Stan’s brother), Lou Cechinni, Fred Ziker, Bob Bierman, Ann South and Mary Miller. Stan extends a special thanks to Jim Eddleman and Tra-vis Mortenson, flooring contractors who do a lot of work in Bentwater. Jim and

The Bentwater United Way leadership committee has created a website titled “Bentwater Cares.” The committee’s website team, led by Patrick O’Neil, cre-ated the website as a means to enhance communications between the committee and Bentwater residents.

The website contains information about the leadership committee and its role in mobilizing Bentwater’s volunteer and fundraising resources to support

MCUW’s mission, priorities and proj-ects – such as Days of Caring. When you visit the site you will see the following:

• Namesoftheleadershipcommitteemembers, as well as what the committee does, its mission, previous accomplish-ments and plans for the campaign year

• ReportsonBentwateractivities, suchas progress towards meeting its annual fundraising goal as shown by the “thermometer”

• ExamplesofprojectsundertakenbyBentwater volunteers

• LinkstoimportantMCUW-relatedtop-ics such as priorities, facts and successes.

You can access the website by clicking on the Care Bear logo located on Montgom-ery County United Way’s (MCUW’s) website (www.mcuw.org) or by inserting http://www.mcuw.org/#!/component/content/article/90-bentwater-cares.html in your browser.

“We could not have completed the pro-jected without them,” said Stan. “They gave the novice Bentwater volunteers valuable advice on flooring installation and helped to get them started.”

Bentwater will hold another Day of Car-ing at Bridgewood Farms in 2012. Last year volunteers at Bridgewood Farms potted the poinsettias Bridgewood Farms used for critical fund raising, performed landscaping work and assisted Bridgewood clients in ceramics projects. Bentwater United Way will participate in similar activities this year. Look for additional information about this project this fall.

Bentwater resident Marlene Summers and her family recently received a gift you can’t put a price tag on.

For 25 years they have felt a void after somehow misplacing two very important boxes. Inside these boxes where memo-ries of Summers’ uncle, U.S. Army Pvt. James “Jimmy” Dale. One box contained newspaper clippings about Dale’s life and service to our country. The other safely nestled the Purple Heart and Silver Star presented to his family after his death.

An unfortunate mistake happened 25 years ago when Summers’ grandparents sold their Texas City home and acci-dently left the medals behind. The new homeowners mistakenly threw them in the trash in the alley behind the house. Fortunately a young boy riding his bike discovered the boxes and took them to his house to show his father.

“The boy’s father is Gerald Packard. He knew exactly what his son had found. My uncle’s name was inscribed on the back of the medals, so he knew who they belonged to, and he spent 25 years searching for our family,” said Summers.

Summers and her family enjoyed visiting with Packard and can’t put into words how thankful they are that he saved the medals and returned them all these years later.”

In August, a mutual friend learned of the medals and was finally able to connect Packard with Summers and her mother, Mary Nelle Parsons.

“He told us he kept the medals close by in his bedroom all these years and always felt a special connection to our family and that it was an honor to return them to our family,” said Summers.

“My mother is 82 years old and was very close to her brother,” said Summers. “He went off to war in 1944 and she never saw him again. So when Mr. Packard returned the medals to her, she was over-whelmed and joyful. It brought back a lot of memories I had never heard before.”

Summers and her family enjoyed visiting with Packard and can’t put into

words how thankful they are that he saved the medals and returned them all these years later.

“It’s really nice knowing there are people in the world who want to do the right thing,” added Summers.

A flood of memories for Summers’ mother as she looks at her brother’s WWII medals.

The boxes Summers’ grandmother used since 1945 to store the Silver Star and Purple Heart along with newspaper clippings.

Summers’ son, David Summers, looks on with her daughter, Sherry Miller, while Mr. Packard presents the first medal to her mother, Mary Nelle Parsons.

Summers shows her son-in-law, Mike Miller, the Purple Heart, which her grandmother allowed her to take to “show and tell” when she was in first grade.
