The Sale will feature the best set of bulls ever produced at Benlock, including the sensational young bull Benlock Thrive, an Alaskan son that has caught everyone’s attention all summer he has the shape, style and profile of a great one.
The grand set of two year old bulls will be led off with a Panda son, named Benlock Tibetan 24A, check out this impressive individual definitely the breed improving kind.
Tom and Shawnda are featuring four fancy purebred heifers from the very top.
77 Ranch are selling the top 60 open heifers, their very best and the result of purchasing Benlock bulls for 18 years. These are outstanding foundation type heifers with extra length and capacity, ranch raised; these are definitely Dave’s best.

Welcome Bug Shit Crazy…Instead of “Love What You Do,” “Bug Shit Crazy” is what Shawnda thought we should call the sale this
year. No! She’s not just referring to me but to all of us cattle families. The many unpaid hours, 7 days a week commitments, the probabilities of livestock equipment and weather, what could
possibly go wrong? It’s certainly a passion driven business that leaves even the most devoted of us periodically scratching our heads in wonderment. And yet, the only thing we’d maybe change would be to have a few more bred cows going into this last cow spike. It’s very exciting times; I’m thinking the fun has just begun. As far as Shawnda’s “Bug Shit Crazy” line, not to worry, she seems to fit in just fine with the rest of us.
Chickens and Bean Counters…We don’t try to be unique or different with our breeding program. We simply sample bloodlines we feel are positively impacting the breed and put them to the test (read pages 14 and 15 “Evaluated, Selected and Raised in a Cowman’s Environment”). Good cattle always float to the top; then gently doubling up on these lines strengthens your predictability and consistency. Although I love reading and studying pedigrees, I learnt long ago, so called good pedigrees don’t necessarily make good cattle. Good cattle make good pedigrees, not the other way around. The same can be said about numbers. I certainly believe in EPD’s; they are like the modern day pedigree. They give us many insights into what we have but just breeding numbers to numbers, does it really make cattle that much better? As Shawnda would say, “In my humble but accurate opinion,” this industry will always be lead by a cattleman’s eye; bean counters are best suited to the chicken business.
Brown Paper Wrap…Years ago, when Mom and I started our beef retail business, it was and still is frozen, brown paper wrapped. We always struggled with initial sales but slowly, as people tried and enjoyed our beef, we gathered a loyal customer base. I really feel our seed stock business has been similar. By developing bulls on low level energy rations, it not only sends out healthy breeding stock but also presents cattle that are easier for the customers to evaluate and find what he or she needs. Flesh, hair and a good clip job can trick the best of us. My idea of a good day clipping is when I stick to my “two beer limit” rule. (To be totally honest, it’s more of a guideline then a set rule.) All joking aside, I would say for me, a successful sale is not so much about the sale averages but instead, about the quality and usefulness of the cattle we’re sending out.
77 Ranch…What a treat to have Dave and Yvonne Fjaagesund with us. Yvonne married us and Dave stood up for me. Dave has been buying bulls from me for almost 18 years. What’s interesting to me is Dave’s first purchase was a full brother to our influential 19D cow. And last year, Dave bought our lead off two year old who was double bred 19D, right up close in the pedigree. Lots of consistency, predictability and quality bred into this 77 Ranch program. As we all know buying good replacement females is more about how many turn out, than your initial purchase price. Time and expenses are crucial to capitalize on today’s opportunities. Dave’s sort isn’t just on looks but also the things you can’t see, like dam’s udder quality. Integrity at 77 Ranch isn’t just another marketing expression; it’s a way of life. We are very honored to be associated with and friends to such great people.
Private Treaty Bulls…This program is designed to help customers fill their bull needs on budget at your convenience, without the pressure of an auction sale. Come early for best selection. The sweet part is if you see a better deal at the sale, we’ll refund your deposit and let you flip to an auction bull. Just come and enjoy the hospitality and fellowship of the day knowing, going in, whatever happens, you’re looked after. Big thanks to Darryl and Peggy Walker, volume buyers for 2014 and to Mel Solvason and Arden Dust for their help in filling our last bull order.
Foundation Style Females…Close to 100 females will sell. All three divisions represent, literally, our very best. Dave’s heifers sell with nothing held back; right off the top, moderate, deep bodied, peas in a pod, future matrons.
Benlock bred heifers represent all of our commercial division, with many fascinating Angus/Simmental/Speckle Park combinations. Four fancy, fancy purebred heifer calves represent a tasty sampling of our program. It’s time to ride the wave; with these females, it will be fun, as well as profitable.
Gratitude…Last year’s sale, certainly for us, was not just another bull sale. For me, personally, it was like watching the accumulation of a life’s work unfold. Words can’t express the gratitude felt; whatever your involvement, even if it was just to come and help us enjoy the day. Thank you. The cattle business is fun and exciting. We’ve all payed our dues. We’ve survived and now it’s time to Thrive. Please come, join us because as you know, it just won’t be the same unless you’re here.

In the fall of 1994, I had a pen of bulls in the commercial barn at Agribition. I happened to be stalled beside Garth Hollinger, Hollbrook Angus and his sister, Leanne and her husband, Jim Ehmann of Homestead Angus. We all had the same thoughts we believed in raising bulls for the commercial man. We all felt we hadsomething to offer the industry and if we could just get our bulls out there, they’d promote themselves.
Moving to Johnstone’s Auction Mart was a big key to the success of the sale. No fancy, high powered, import help, just the locally trusted, known and respected crew from Johnstones. Dorothy kept the books straight without
complaint, as Garth seemingly always had some ad hawk percentage off deal. You had to be creative through some of those BSE years. Corey was the prime example of the crew; he’d be wiping down the pens (Johnstone’s Mart was always immaculate), then he’d “Change Hats” and come up front to take the bids.
Jason and Carla Hicks were in for a few years and Froehlichs came in with the dispersal of Homestead. I had many a lengthy conversation with my good friend, Linda, about genetics and the state of the purebred industry. Both outfits fit the same fundamentals that represented “Black Bonanza.”
Garth was certainly the catalyst of “Black Bonanza” as he would spend months on the phone promoting. When the rest of us were washing and clipping, Garth would have his bulls already done and be off on the road driving into yards. Garth worked very hard and yet would have been the last to have called it work, as he so enjoyed the social of good cattlemen.
A person remembers some of the good bulls but it’s the people, the friends, the relationships and the fun that sick in your mind. Nothing like a good bull sale social. As you look at the sampling pictures, the old adage, “only the good die young,” comes to mind. We’re missing some wonderful people. The latest loss being Leanne Ehmann; she really was a wonderful person and will be sadly missed.
Uncle Jock told me, “Live it up while you’re young.” So in that spirit, let’s have another bull sale social. Thanks to all for your past or present support and friendship.

Dave is the third generation to live at the farm. He has a 300 head Angus cattle ranch located half way between Moose Jaw and Swift Current. These heifers are the top cut from the herd nothing held back. I am positive these will become excellent mothers.

Alaskan continues to impress at Benlock. His first daughters came into production and every one of them laid down ideal udders. This Hamilton bred Kodiak x Echo herd bull has passed every test we can think of, with flying colors. He is simply one of the great breeding bulls, at the very least, in the history of this farm.
Big thanks to Bob and Gail Switzer for the purchases of not only our first lot to sell at our first on farm sale but also our first Alaskan to sell. Seems fitting Bob should buy Dad’s name sake, Benlock Benson 17A, as he always enjoyed and respected both Mom and Dad.

BENLOCK ATALANTA 76J“Survive and thrive” used to be a phrase I used a lot. The moderation, depth and
function to survive when times get tough, with the length to thrive when times are good. Cattle that could pull through feed shortages but gain when put on feed. Benlock Thrive has all those attributes. He carries a perfect muscle pattern with his length and style. This calf really puts it all together; the nice thing is he comes by it honestly, as there are generations of the same on both sides of the pedigree. You know he’s got to breed true to himself.
Our plan with this calf is to draw him at some point and use him through our heifer AI program; I see lots of calving ease in this calf. We’re also keeping an interest on his maternal brother, Lot 40. Check him out, lots of consistency in this cow family.
It’s not time to cash in guys; you’ve survived, it’s time to Thrive.

Benlock Thrive with Dam

Tibetan is one of those rare individuals that excel at both growth and quality. His dam on eight calves has an average weaning weight ratio of 118 and is designated as an “Elite Dam” by the Canadian Angus Association. Her ninth calf by Alaskan will once again be in the mix at the top of next year’s bull pen. I hope to have Tibetan’s maternal sister on display to show the power and quality of this cow family. 25P, now at ten years of age has stood the test of time well; still sound on feet and udder structure. Tibetan himself has impeccable depth of heel and foot quality, amazing scrotal shape and size. This bull’s depth of body and volume will just continue to grow, as he matures and develops. Although Tibetan has never been worked, clipping day he stood like an old show bull; he definitely has the Kodiak temperament. As Panda exhibits the power of line breeding with both Krugerrand and Wilbar Ruby, top and bottom, so does Tibetan carry on the tradition with Benlock Dateline 127L, sires of both Erica 25P and Evening Tinge 2P. The Dateline bull, although we didn’t get to use him much, adds power wherever he’s present in the pedigree.
For success you don’t need to bet on Tibetan, because he’s a sure thing!

Panda stamps his calves with pattern, style and quality. Just testing the waters the first year, Panda was really only exposed to one female in her production years, dam of Tibetan. Panda exemplifies the word quality. He’ll be on display sale day and he’ll impress the most discriminating eye.
I give a lot of credit in this bull to the strength of the female lines. Double bred Wilbar Rubys, 955N and 548L are maternal sisters. The famous Echos, of course, behind Tiger (also behind Alaskan) but just as worthy are the Evening Tinges. Generation after generation of picture perfect, easy fleshing, fault free cows who always seem to bring in calves, with that extra bloom.

Good things always happen when 76J is this close up in the pedigree. Check out Lot 1, Lot 20 and Lot 40, perfect patterned cattle just like the 76J cow.
An amazing performance bull. Dam is a maternal sister to last year’s lead off bull “Benson” who sold to Sandy Bar. In the top 1% of the breed for weaning weight, 120A brings a unique combo of growth and quality.
An incredible powerhouse of a bull, you have to see to truly appreciate. One of those bulls you have to forget the numbers and just look at; he has the world to offer. Same cow family as the lead off heifer calf, check her out.

Full brother to the lead off two year old last year to Dave Fjaagesund. Double bred 19D on the bottom, he’s got the herd bull look.
The dam 17T is also the dam of our Speck 63X bull, whom I feel is the future of our Touch Down line. The old 40J cow was the founding female in our “Stoked” 107S line. Solid genetics with a little extra stretch.

Virility Built InOur herd bulls
are put to the test, actively covering cows on rugged
terrain, while maintaining
reasonable shape. Their sons not only
have these same genetics but are also developed to stand
the test of durability and virility.
Calving EaseHeifers and cows calve on a section
of grass. Even our performance bulls have normal calving ease, as we work at consistently maintaining moderate birth weights within our gene pool.
FunctionI remember in my younger years, winter
calving, you’d put a cow in the chute to get a calf on a bad udder and say, “Oh yes, we
did this last year!” But now when you’ve got to pull them in off grass, it’s amazing how
much better your memory works.

Tribute to YoungdaleAlthough I’ve always been drawn to their performance, incredible eye appeal, and extra attention
to muscle pattern, in hind sight, one word sums up their impact…function. These cattle have always excelled in production. Feel good if your next herd bull selection has some Youngdale in it.
If it doesn’t, don’t worry, it’s probably there; it’ll just be further back in the pedigree.

This is Thrive’s (Lot 1) maternal brother. We see this bull playing a very big part in the future of our Touch Down line. Our plan is to draw him before he goes out, at our expense, and see him working our pastures for years to come. One benefit to our half interest bulls is we’ll winter them, no charge. I feel this bull has a very exciting future that will greatly complement our Kodiak line.
In the top 2% of the breed for weaning, with super length, shape and eye appeal. Check out his maternal sister, Lot 49; she’s a bell ringer.
Selling Half Interest and Half Possession on Lot 40. We retain possession July 25th of each breeding season.

A full sister was our lead off heifer in last year’s sale to Greg Barber. 42K’s X Alaskan son led the sale to Sandy Bar. The Grid Iron bull adds calving ease.
Grant Rolston loved the way this bull strided, overlapping his front step with his back. He said, “That’s the kind of bulls that work on the BC ranches.”
Probably the most complete bull in the sale. If you’re building a cow herd or just looking for calving ease, this bull is strictly quality.

75B was taken off bale grazing with her mother on December 13, clipped and pictured within a week. She’s a natural and her young mother will indeed raise us another one for our replacement pen.
This heifer truly fascinates me. I think she has many amazing possibilities, as she combines the best of Panda’s quality with the length of this top producing Taste Test daughter. Truly exciting.

A beautiful, long bodied female. The only thing longer than this heifer is her lineage of great breeding females; Ruby, Echo, Atalanta and Evening Tinge.
This powerful, deep bodied female will someday mature into a powerfully productive matron. You’ll be glad you own her.

Benlock Scotty 1Y - Owned with Les and Val Schick, we had such an amazing set of calves I researched his pedigree to see what was back there that he bred so well. Turns out he traces 29 times to Rito 707. He’ll be on display sale day and will be a big feature sire in 2016.

Speckles at BenlockI remember a few years ago, trying
Holtby’s Speckle Park beef and proclaiming to Shawnda, “I’m breeding the whole herd Speckle,” it was so good. This past summer, we had a great trip to Holtbys and Kiziaks (Codiak Acres) near Lloydminster and Edmonton. At Holtbys we saw, first hand, the Speckle Park/Angus cross program on a large scale. Although the usual advantages of crossbreeding were evident, I felt a natural co-existence of the two breeds, as they both seem to fit our environment so well. At Codiak Acres, we saw one of the best sets of purebred cows you’ll find anywhere; I don’t care what color you paint them. Thank you Gary and Nancy for your herd bull genetics for this year’s sale.
I know for ourselves, we sent out heifers last year bred Speckle to some very good cattlemen and I received back very positive feedback. This is your chance to have some fun and sample a new way of thinking.

Reference Sire - Benlock Blackberry 39TEPD’s BW 2.9 WW 58 YW 85 MM 13 TM 42
Blackberry has amazing EPD’s with a +58 WW that puts him in the top 2% of the breed for that trait, but still above breed average for calving ease. Although this bull competes with the best of them on performance/calving ease, what sets him apart from the others is his function. Feet, leg structure, virility, his ability to cover the cows. It’s so fitting that the picture we’re using is of him out with the cows in his working clothes.

Reference Sire - SMW Ulysses 7UEPD’s BW 2.8 WW 57 YW 86 MM 13 TM 42
Ulysses has been an amazing find for us from Sharon Wagner. Whether its daughters or sons, the extra depth and volume of these cattle possess turn the heads of the best of cattlemen. A great deal of the strength of this bull comes from his Right Time daughter, who now resides at Tom Flanagan’s in his transplant program.
