Definition Of Internet• The Internet is the global system of interconnected computer

networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link billions of devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies.

Benefits of Internet• The Internet provides opportunities galore,

and can be used for a variety of things. Some of the things that you can do via the Internet are:

• E-mail: E-mail is an online correspondence system. With e-mail you can send and receive instant electronic messages, which works like writing letters.

Page 4: Benefits of Internet

• Access Information: The Internet is a virtual treasure trove of information. Any kind of information on any topic under the sun is available on the Internet.

• Shopping: Along with getting information on the Internet, you can also shop online.

• Online Chat: There are many ‘chat rooms’ on the web that can be accessed to meet new people, make new friends, as well as to stay in touch with old friends.

Disadvantages of Internet

• Spending too much time at the desk with a computer can harm your physical and mental health. Such people can become reclusive and lonely. This could lead to low self-esteem and a whole host of psychosomatic conditions.

• An over-reliance on the Internet can also lead to a general lowering of mental capacity. Mental fatigue and a feeling of lethargy can gradually creep in as a result of a sedentary life sitting all day long in front of the computer and surfing the Web. Lack of exercise can cause a general deterioration in health and lead to a poor immune response.

Page 7: Benefits of Internet

• The World Wide Web (WWW) is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by URLs, interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet. The World Wide Web was invented by English scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. He wrote the first web browser in 1990 while

employed at CERN in Switzerland. The World Wide Web was central to the development of the Information Age and is the primary tool billions of people use to interact on the Internet.

• Web pages are primarily text documents formatted and annotated with Hypertext Markup Language (HTML).

Definition of Web Browser• A web browser (commonly referred to as

a browser) is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. An information resource is identified by a Uniform Resource Identifier(URI/URL) and may be a web page, image, video or other piece of content. Hyperlinks present in resources enable users easily to navigate their browsers to related resources.

Page 9: Benefits of Internet

Disadvantages of web browser• Danger of overload and excess information• – It requires an efficient information search strategy• – The search can be slow• – It is difficult to filter and prioritize information• – No guarantee of finding what one is looking for• – There is a lot of apparently unconnected information• – Net becomes overloaded because of large number of users• – No regulation• – No quality control over available data• – The ease with which information can be constantly up-dated• can cause problems of referencing

Definition Of web portal • A web portal is most often one specially designed web site that

brings information together from diverse sources in a uniform way. Usually, each information source gets its dedicated area on the page for displaying information (a portal); often, the user can configure which ones to display. Variants of portals include smashups and intranet "dashboards" for executives and managers. The extent to which content is displayed in a "uniform way" may depend on the intended user and the intended purpose, as well as the diversity of the content. Very often design emphasis is on a certain "metaphor" for configuring and customizing the presentation of the content and the chosen implementation framework and/or code libraries.

Uses of Web Portal• A portal is a user facing aggregation point where multiple,

potentially unrelated functionalities and services are housed. Usually, portals are used as a gateway to consumer type of offerings such as searching, news, weather information, electronic mail, and stock prices. Portals provide a single location that users can turn to when they are looking for information and services. Instead of spending a lot of time searching through multiple locations, portals aggregate the relevant information at a single, easy-to-remember location.

Definition of Search Engine• Typically, Web search engines work by sending out a spider to

fetch as many documents as possible. Another program, called an indexer, then reads these documents and creates an index based on the words contained in each document. Each search engine uses a proprietary algorithm to create its indices such that, ideally, only meaningful results are returned for each query.

• As many website owners rely on search engines to send traffic to their website, and entire industry has grown around the idea of optimizing Web content to improve your placement in search engine results. Learn more about search engine optimization (SEO) in this Web podia' definition.

Definition of Web site• A website, also written as web site, is a collection of

related web pages, including multimedia content, typically identified with a common domain name, and published on at least one web server. A web site may be accessible via a public Internet Protocol (IP) network, such as the Internet, or a private local area network (LAN), by referencing a uniform resource locator (URL) that identifies the site. All publicly accessible websites collectively constitute the World Wide Web, while private websites are typically a part of an intranet.

• A website is a collection of interlinked web pages typically hosted from a single domain. A website is accessible over the internet or a private network such as Local Area Network (LAN) through an address known as Uniform Resource Locator (URL).

• The URLs organize the web pages into a hierarchical form which help a user to navigate through the pages. A home page is included that usually is the starting point of all navigation artifacts, including links to other pages, an “About Us” page, or a “Contact Us” page.

• A web portal is a customized website that immerses information from a wide array of sources in a consistent and uniformed manner.

• For example, web portals are served in the form of dashboards for company executives and managers. How the content on a portal should be organized and presented depends largely on the requirements of the end users?

• A web portal may be customized based on the restrictions of domain searches. An enterprise portal usually has a consistent design and has the capability to interact with applications and databases.
