Annual Report

This past year has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. Our nation has struggled on many levels. We have seen the government shutdown over political

and financial issues, violence within our communities and higher education challenged at national and regional levels.

As our nation continues an economic recovery, we are so very grateful for the support of our alumni and friends. The University continues to grow with the opening this past fall of our campus in Mesa, Ariz., and plans to add a state-of-the-art academic building to house the College of Business, and increased enrollment. It is exciting that Benedictine has experienced growth in enrollment, academic programs and facilities, but we must be cognizant of the challenges that face higher education. We have declared this the “Year of Enrollment” and we are focusing our efforts to attract, retain and

graduate exceptional students to lead our nation. Our families continue the struggle to give their children the opportunity of a college education. We must strive to acknowledge and address some of these challenges.

We are committed to the growth of this institution while maintaining our Benedictine values. We have made great strides in our efforts to engage alumni. During this “Year of Enrollment,” we will continue down the path of engaging our alumni to return to their alma mater, share their stories with our current and prospective students, and reaffirm the value their Benedictine education has had on their personal and professional lives. We are proud to say that the Benedictine community of faculty, staff, alumni and friends of the University has joined together as a strong team to support the needs of our students.

Thank you for your support during this past fiscal year. The University completed several projects that were in progress last year and positioned itself for the future with

a new branch campus in Mesa, Ariz., and plans to expand the existing classroom capacity on the main campus in Lisle, Ill.

During fiscal 2013, Benedictine University at Mesa began business operations at 51 E. Main St., a suite leased from the City of Mesa to serve initially as an information and recruitment center. Simultaneously, construction work on Gillett Hall, the main academic building in Mesa, was underway at 225 E. Main St., a facility also being leased from the City of Mesa. As of this writing, the branch campus welcomed its first class of students in fall 2013.

On the main campus, physical infrastructure enhancements were made to the Kindlon Hall basement and library, the Neff Welcome Center, the Borsellino Family Football Center in the Rice Center and the turf at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex Stadium. As of May 31,

architectural work for a new academic building was in progress, along with a plan to finance the cost of construction and restructure existing debt.

As of May 31, 2013, total assets on our Statement of Financial Position (University only) increased $9.5 million due primarily to higher receivable balances and property and equipment additions mentioned in the preceding paragraph. Total liabilities decreased $2.2 million largely due to scheduled bond amortization payments and lower construction-related payables, partially offset by a higher deferred revenue balance. After subtracting total liabilities from our assets, we were left with total net assets of $93.8 million, 14.3 percent greater than last year’s balance.

On the Statement of Activities, gross tuition and fee revenue increased $3.3 million from the prior year to $106.4 million. Adjusted for scholarships and grants, net tuition revenue increased $1.3 million or slightly less than 2 percent from the prior year. The growth in total revenue and other support was driven

primarily by large one-time restricted gifts, a capital grant and the reversal of last year’s net investment loss to income of almost $5 million. On the expense side, we continued to invest in our personnel and their welfare. Our results were also helped by a favorable valuation of the interest rate swaps. After reducing total revenue and other support of $98.7 million by total expenses, net assets for all classifications showed an increase of $11.1 million.

The environment in higher education continues to be very competitive and challenging for many schools. We are not immune from the effects of shifting demographical trends and external pressure on pricing and discounting. However, our strategy to diversify tuition revenue sources and our collective capabilities to execute it remain constant as is our effort to find ways to improve efficiencies and workforce productivity. The dedication and hard work of faculty and staff provide us with the confidence and ability to see the University through the coming years.

For years, alumni and friends of the Benedictine University community have asked how they can commemorate their time or honor someone at Benedictine

by naming an area or program on campus as part of a generous donation supporting the University.

During the summer, University officials and deans responded to this request, identifying a comprehensive — but not complete — list

of naming opportunities and memorial acknowledgements for individuals and groups who are looking not only to contribute to

the success of the University, but to leave a lasting impression on its future.

The fall 2013 issue of Voices (ben.edu/voices) highlighted opportunities supporting University Ministry, Athletics,

and a connected statue garden commemorating the contributions of key Benedictine and Catholic

saints and other pivotal religious leaders who have had an impact on the University.

Many other ideas addressing the various needs of the University’s College

of Liberal Arts, and Benedictine University at Springfield and

Benedictine University at Mesa branch campuses are also

currently being offered. This annual report features a

brief list of some of these additional opportunities.

Scholarships

While there are scholarships available for students

pursuing degrees in Music, Education, Political

Science and Fine or Studio Arts, or who are planning

to pursue either Ministry or a monastic life, there are

no scholarships available for students who choose to study

Criminal Justice, Graphic Arts and Design, Global Studies,

Medical Humanities and Theology. This funding opportunity

will benefit qualifying students by establishing dedicated

scholarships for undergraduates who major in these areas.

A Steinway School at Benedictine University [$75,000 per piano]

The University’s Music programs have expanded significantly in recent years

and the number of students who perform in ensembles continues to grow.

Today, students perform as part of the University’s concert series and at other

important functions such as Commencement, the Hooding and Honors Ceremony

and the annual Christmas concert. Unfortunately, the pianos in the Department

of Music are aging rapidly and must be replaced. The piano is an essential instrument

for all students involved in music. Three years ago, the University purchased a Steinway

grand piano — one of the highest quality pianos in the industry. These additional pianos will

immediately enhance the prestige and stature of the University’s Music program. An ultimate

goal of acquiring 10 Steinway pianos will help establish Benedictine as a distinctive, All-Steinway

school. (Pricing includes cost of piano and maintenance.)

Psychology Lab [$50,000*]

This funding opportunity supports the Psychology program by creating a laboratory that

will provide students with some of the same tools used by professional psychologists. No such space currently

exists on campus. A new facility will provide students with a computer lab, furniture and a room with a two-way mirror

for conducting confidential psychological observations.

Endowed Chair [$2 million one-time gift or $200,000 per year for 10 years]

This funding opportunity supports the creation of an endowed chair for the department or academic program of the donor’s choice

or personal interest. An endowed chair is the highest academic award a University can confer on a faculty member, and is both an honor for the

holder of the appointment and a tribute to the donor who establishes it. Endowed chairs encourage the recruitment and retention of high-quality faculty,

and attract the best and brightest students.

Faculty/Student Summer Research Program [$25,000 per year]

The College of Liberal Arts has established an ambitious faculty/student summer research program that allows select students to work with faculty on an ongoing project. This funding

opportunity will expand the program, giving more students the chance to work alongside faculty and collaborate on important research. Past projects included an analysis of campaign

ads for the Illinois State Supreme Court, a review of bullying and Internet usage among teens and college students, assisting students with Asperger’s syndrome in their transition to college, and the

influence of gender in the decision-making of the appellate courts in the United States and Canada.

Chapel [$265,000*]This funding opportunity supports efforts to renovate the Chapel, which was built in the late 1890s. Donations will provide for a new entrance, upgraded pews and restoration of the magnificent stained glass windows to their original beauty. Ira A. Weaver Science Building [$600,000*]

Built in 1961, the Ira A. Weaver Science Building contains five science classrooms and laboratories, and three offices. Two chemistry labs in particular are exhibiting wear. Needed improvements include six new fume hoods, six work surfaces, solvent and acid storage areas and two new emergency eyewash stations.

Dawson Hall Biology Lab [$150,000*]Dawson Hall was built in 1930 as Benedictine University at Springfield’s first academic and administration building. The three-story building houses classrooms of varying sizes, administrative offices, the campus bookstore and Café a la Carte.
