Course Description

For many school districts, energy costs are second only to salary costs, exceeding the cost of supplies and books. Every dollar saved on energy could be spent on improvements in the learning environment.

Join the U.S. Department of Energy and a panel of leaders representing three diverse K-12 school districts – Aurora Public Schools in Aurora, Colorado; Los Angeles Unified School District in Los Angeles, California; and Portland Public Schools in Portland, Oregon – as they present their benchmarking roadmaps, which reinvest energy savings for additional energy conservation measures and school resources. The panel will be moderated by Crystal McDonald, K-12 School Lead for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge in the Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy.

The three panelists will share their specific district-wide benchmarking initiatives and provide insight into how tracking and managing utility costs enabled them to identify cost savings opportunities, freeing up critical funds for additional school resources. Ms. McDonald will provide an overview of the Better Buildings Challenge, a program of over 345 partners across diverse market sectors who commit themselves to a 20 percent reduction in energy improvement over a ten year period. To date, 27 K-12 schools have joined the Challenge since the program launched in 2011.

City of Portland Energy Performance Reporting for Commercial Buildings (2015) Requires owners of

commercial buildings over 20,000 square feet to track energy use and report it on an annual basis. The policy covers nearly 80% of the commercial square footage and affects approximately 1,000 buildings
