R&D on CO2 Capture Technology in Statoil • CO2 Capture Technology improvement through

testing and learning at TCM

• Supporting Oxy-combustion Once Through Steam Generation (OTSG) demonstration project at Cenovus Energy’s Christina Lake oil sand operation. Test campaign planned to be finalized this spring.

• Contribute to development of some promising but still immature technologies by “open innovation”:

− CO2 membranes at NTNU with Air Products

− Better solvents in MoSolv project

Statoil’s main focus on CO2 capture is TCM • Why focus on post combustion?

− Be able to capture CO2 from Natural Gas based energy systems

• CO2 capture technology improvement through testing and learning at TCM:

− Established amine (MEA) baseline as a benchmark/reference and TCM DA is sharing the test results

− Cost reduction through operating experience and multiple incremental technology improvements

− Test new solvents and allow modifications of the plant to better fit improved solvents

TCM is the world’s largest facility for testing and improving CO2 capture. Knowledge gained will prepare the ground for CO2 capture initiatives to combat climate change world wide.

Technologies tested at TCM

• From start-up August 2013 until March 2015:

− Aker Solutions tested two novel solvents (> 3000 hrs per solvent)

− Aker Solution and TCM Owners tested MEA and established a new MEA reference (2000 hrs)

− Alstom finalized testing of CAP (> 6000 hrs)

− Shell Cansolv test with advanced solvent is ongoing

MEA – Main results • TCM has produced and published results for CO2 capture from gas turbine flue gas

by 30 w% MEA solvent system

• Minimum Steam Reboiler Duty for aqueous 30 wt% MEA (> 85% CO2 capture rate, )

− Without antifoam: 4.1 MJ/kg CO2

− With antifoam: 3.7 MJ/kg CO2

• Minimum Steam Reboiler Duty for aqueous 40 wt% MEA (> 85% CO2 capture rate)

− With antifoam likely still active, 3.4 MJ/kg CO2 steam consumption was measured

• Impact on Steam Reboiler Duty : − Increased absorber packing heights resulted in lower SRD

− Decreased flue gas supply temperature resulted in lower SRD

− Higher MEA concentration resulted in lower SRD and L/G ratio

• Independent verification work conducted by EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute)

Emission – Most important Risk Factor

Air: 0.3 ng/m3 Water: 4 ng/l

MEA baseline: typical emission performance • Emissions from the TCM plant are followed up by use of:

− On-line measurements (FTIR, PTR-TOF-MS (UiO), other) − Isokinetic sampling campaigns and off-line measurements

• TCM lab measurements • Third party measurements (SINTEF, Ramböll, FORCE, etc.)

MEA 0.02 ppmv NH3 10 ppmv Alkylamines 0.002 ppmv Acetaldehyde 0.2 ppmv Formaldehyde 0.1 ppmv Total nitrosamines < 0.00008 mg/m3 Total nitramines < 0.0002 mg/m3

Conclusions

• 30 w% MEA baseline established at TCM:

− Flue gas: 47.000 Sm3/h and about 3.5 vol% CO2

− 90% capture rate and SRD of 4.1 GJ/t CO2 (without anti-foam)

− Emissions effectively stopped by the two stage water wash section (6m packing):

• Very low emissions of MEA (ppb range)

• Emissions of nitrosamines and nitramines below detection limits (< 20 pptv)

− Emissions were within the limits set by the Norwegian environmental authorities

• Proves full-scale CO2 capture operations technically and environmentally possible for treatment of gas-turbine flue gas

• Following process aspects not concluded; long term performance indices (corrosion, degradation, etc.), use of anti-foam solutions, use of lean vapor compressor, etc.

− Use of anti-foam solutions provided SRD down to about 3.7 GJ/t CO2

− Use of 40 wt% aq. MEA provided SRD down to about 3.4 GJ/t CO2

TCM emission permit • TCM was granted an emission permit for the CO2 capture plant from the

Norwegian government in 2012. For the first time health risk of nitrosamines and nitramines was addressed.

• Final permit approval and conditions:
