The Embassy of the State of Israel together with Israel's Agency for International Development Coop-

eration (MASHAV) donated two greenhouses to the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV). The inaugu-

ral ceremony was kicked off by Deputy Ambassador Mr. Or Daniely.

ASYV, was founded by the late Jewish philanthropist Anne Heyman

whom modeled the village after Yemin Orde, an Israeli youth village

established in 1953 to care for orphans of the Holocaust. The Village

is a place of hope, where "tears are dried" (signified by the Kinyar-

wanda word "agahozo") and students can live in peace (from the

Hebrew "shalom").

ASYV is 144 acres residential community of 454 children in rural

Rwanda. Its home to youth orphaned during and after the Genocide

of 1994.

It is an internationally recognized fact that Israel is among the lead-

ers in Agricultural technology. Greenhouses were originally invent-

ed by the Dutch. And have since been adapted in Israel for crop cul-

tivation in adverse climate conditions both in the dry arid desert and in the cooler part of the country

with a higher rainfall.

The donation of the two greenhouse this years and one last year

will further uphold the village’s goal to be 100% self sustained in

terms of food production. The addition of the two new greenhous- es

will enable the villages to produce 70% of its consumption.

Israel with its cooperation agency MASHAV, has been working in

Rwanda mainly in the field of Agriculture. MASHAV is sharing

knowledge and expertise with Rwanda for quite a while now and

the donation of the greenhouse is another extension of its engage-

ment on the overall development of the country.

transfer of knowledge; capacity building and demonstration; agro-inputs (nurseries for better seed-

lings and varieties) and fresh produce.

The center puts special emphasis on building local capacities in agriculture and agricultural entrepreneur-

ship, and will conduct applied agricultural R&D in order to adapt Israeli agricultural experience, technolo-

gies and innovations to local needs, serving all stakeholders in the horticultural sector, from small-holders

to large commercial farmers. The project is accompanied by a MASHAV long-term expert.

This year, with experts coming form Israel a total of 100 Rwandans were trained with for different

The Smallholder Horticulture Project

(SHP), MASHAV-USAID-MoALR is a Joint

Technical Cooperation Program mainly

implemented in four main regions in Ethi-

opia - Amhara, Tigray, SNNPR and Oro-

mia. The project is designed to be imple-

mented between May 2016 and October

2019. It aims to access new domestic and

avocado export markets, as well as pro-

vide technical support to improve phyto-

The future is Avocado!

By building a stronger, more produc-

tive commercial horticulture sector,

SHP intends to increase smallholder

farmers’ income and foreign currency

earnings while making these nutritious

crops more available to the Ethiopian

consumer. In general, the project

works to develop a competitive and

sustainable fruit development sector

focusing on establishing a base for avo-

The market is hungry for avocado!

Avocados market is expected to reach

7.6 million metric ton by 2025 globally.

Avocado is a fruit native to Mexico and

Central America, which has been widely

planted and naturalized in other Latin

American countries with tropical cli-

mates as well as in the United States (in

Florida and California). The Crop is be-

come popular also in Israel, Kenya

Rwanda, South Africa, Ethiopia and oth-

er African countries too.

Although avocado is not a product of

daily demand, it continues to gain popu-

larity around the world due to the fact

that it contains lots of fiber and is rich

in monounsaturated fats, vitamins and

minerals. Avocado's unique nutrition

profile is combined with a pleasant

taste. Mexico and the U.S. are the largest

avocado consumers in the world. While

Mexico is also the largest producer and

exporter, the U.S.A mainly imports avo-

cados from Mexico.

Smallholder Horticulture Project de-

signed not only to expand avocado

plantation but also to commercialize the

sector.

Therefore, the project has been working to lay

a strong sustainable base for the export of avo-

cado fruits from Ethiopia. In response, 2.8, 9.8

and 11.5 tons of avocado fruits were exported

from Ethiopia in 2015, 2016 and 2017 respec-

tively. A total of 27 tons of Hass avocado fruit

was collected from Amhara, South and Oromia

regions and after the process of Sorting and

grading. The project has exported in total net

21.1 Tone of Hass Avocado fruits to Europe
