Corner Director’s December Celebrations During December, there are three major holidays celebrated around the world: Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Christmas. Observed on Dec. 25, Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the central figure in Christianity. According to Christian tradition, the infant Jesus was born to the Virgin Mary, placed in a manger, and visited by shepherds and wise men. Nativity scenes depicting these figures in a stable setting are popular holiday decorations. Other common Christmas symbols, such as evergreen trees and Yule logs, originate from ancient celebrations of the winter solstice. Those who celebrate Christmas often exchange gifts with loved ones, and children look forward to receiving gifts from Santa Claus. Hanukkah. An eight-day Jewish celebration, Hanukkah occurs in late November or December, beginning on the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar. The holiday focuses on the miraculous oil that the Jews used to light the menorah in the newly Mike Amici, Executive Director reclaimed Jerusalem Temple. Although there was only enough oil to last one night, the menorah candles burned for eight nights. Families celebrate Hanukkah by preparing traditional foods and lighting the menorah, adding one candle on each night. Kwanzaa. Observed from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1, Kwanzaa is a celebration of African- American culture and heritage. Based on traditional harvest celebrations, Kwanzaa highlights the seven principles of African heritage: unity; self-determination; collective work and responsibility; cooperative economics; purpose; creativity; and faith. Many Kwanzaa celebrations include candle lighting, discussion, music, feasting and gift-giving.

Grow Your Own HerbsEnjoy fresh herbs during the

winter by growing them indoors!Select herbs suited for indoor life, such as basil, parsley, thyme andsage. Use pots with drainage holesto prevent root rot. Keep the soilmoist but not overwatered, andgive plants plenty of light eachday—six hours of sun or 14 hoursof artificial light. If your indoortemperatures are around 60degrees at night and 70 degreesduring the day, you’re set; in fact, the warm, moist conditions inyour kitchen or bathroom makean ideal home for indoor herbs.

Don’t Be Fooled byWintertime Myths

Did your mother ever say youwould catch a cold if you wentoutside with wet hair? Well, ourmothers weren’t always right. How many of the followingwinter health myths did you thinkwere true?

You catch cold by being in thecold. Freezing temperatures, wethair and bare heads don’t causecolds. Colds are caused by viruses, which are more often spread inthe winter because people tend tostay inside, in closer contact witheach other.

You don’t need sunscreen. Youmay be wearing more clothingand spending less time outside, but you should still wearsunscreen to protect your skinfrom the sun’s UV rays, which arepresent year-round. You shouldalso wear sunglasses in the winter, especially if there is snow on theground, which reflects thesun’s rays.

Don’t exercise outside in the cold.As long as you do a properwarm-up before starting anystrenuous physical activity, itshould be safe to exerciseoutdoors. What better way to beatthe cold?

You should sleep longer in thewinter. Always make sure you aregetting enough sleep to feel rested, but sleep is no more or lessimportant in wintertime.

Elderly people are morevulnerable to UTIs for manyreasons, not the least of which istheir overall susceptibility to allinfections due to the suppressedimmune system that comes withage and certain age-relatedconditions.

But elderlymen and women experience aweakening of the muscles of thebladder, which leads to moreurine being retained in thebladder, poor bladder emptyingand incontinence, which can leadto UTIs. In elderly men, anenlarged prostate can also lead toobstructed urinary flow and urinestagnation, while in women, bladder prolapse due to weaknessof supporting structures can havethe same effect. In either sex, no

matter the cause, stagnant urinebecomes a breeding ground forthe growth and colonization ofthe bacteria that cause UTIs.Interestingly enough, the elderlywith a UTI are often misdiagnosedwith senior dementia orAlzheimer’s disease, because a UTIcan mimic symptoms of suchconditions. Also, according toNursing magazine between 30%and 40% of elderly patients withserious infection don’t exhibit thehallmark sign of fever due theinability of the immune system tomount a response to infection dueto the effects of aging. As thebacteria in the urine spread to theblood stream and cross theblood-brain barrier, confusionand other cognitive difficulties canbe the result. Sudden onset ofthese symptoms should lead oneto investigate possible UTI. Anelderly person who is experiencingsigns of mental difficulties shouldalso be closely monitored forother signs of a UTI.

Common signs to look for inthe elderly that relate to infectionis a sudden onset of urinaryincontinence, falling, confusion,or not being able to perform dailytasks (feeding, dressing, bathing)themselves. It is very critical thatwater intake (in both men andwomen), wiping from front toback, and showering versusbathing are implemented as theyhelp prevent a UTI.
