Bell's Palsy Treatment

There is little point treating the swelling around the nerve tissue, if it is caused by an underlying herpes virus. You see there are many causes for Bell's Palsy, and knowing which is which, and how to identify the different types can make everything much easier.

I do need to stress that reading this guide while being helpful to you, isnot a substitute for a trip to the doctors. This guide should be used forinformation purposes only, but please do not try and self diagnose.

However, knowing the possible causes and effects will enable you to consider all the things you need to tell your doctor. The causes of Bell's Palsy are very diverse, so I recommend you let them know of any medical problems you have had in the past, and any physical trauma you may have recently suffered.

What is Bell's Palsy

Bell's Palsy is based around damage to the facial nerves, and can forsome people be a terrifying experience. It is a neurological disorder occurringsuddenly and without warning, often appearing overnight. You can be fineone minute, and then suddenly you are unable to control certain parts of your face.

Common symptoms of a sufferer of Bell's Palsy are: Slurring of thespeech, loss or change of taste, dysfunctional tear-ducts, drooling and facialspasms or paralysis.

These symptoms can be quite horrifying for most people, especially ifthey have not heard of Bell's Palsy before.

Bell's Palsy Treatment

It is not as uncommon as it appears, as it affects around 40,000 people in the United States each year alone. Worldwide this is approximately 0.2% of people, which is roughly 1 in 500 people that suffer from this condition.

Bell's Palsy is most commonly seen in young adults, affecting bothmales and females equally. Many people confuse the symptoms with that of a stroke, as it has very few similarities. To the casual observer a Bell's Palsysufferer would appear to be the victim of a stroke.

The way Bell's Palsy works, is that the brain sends electrochemicalsignals along the facial nerves to the muscles. Because of a breakdown ortrauma to the facial nerve the signals simply cannot get through properly. You could think of it as a faulty wire in an electrical system, as the signal issent but the wire is damaged.

What are the Symptoms

The symptoms of Bell's Palsy are quickly progressive, and therefore maystart as difficult to identify, but should be clear relatively quickly.

Facial weakness/paralysis: This usually occurs on one side of the face.Very often you may find that your eyebrow or eyelid is drooping . You mayhave difficulty speaking, but this is purely muscular and not related to theeffects of a stroke where such paralysis is often accompanied by confusion.Your mouth may sag and you may have difficulty drinking or eating. It mayalso be difficult to close your eye.

An altered sense of taste: You may find that some foods taste strangeand this is due to some of the nerve endings in your tongue being affected by the paralysis.

Facial pain or earache: In some cases pain behind the ear or in the backof the head is a precursor to Bell's Palsy.

Lack of tears in one eye: Again this is an effect of the facial nervebecoming paralysed.

Sensitive hearing: Some sounds may become amplified and you mayfind your hearing in on of your ears has become overly sensitive.

These symptoms are not only limited to Bell's Palsy but are verycommon in people diagnosed with this. To make sure that you actually haveBell's Palsy, I highly recommend you seek a trained professional for diagnosis.

However, Doctors can occasionally be reluctant to diagnose Bell's Palsy, sojust don't give up until they give you a clear and definite diagnosis of what iseffecting you.

Getting Diagnosed

Because Bell's Palsy has so many symptoms in common with otherconditions it can often be confused with them. To stop this confusion frombecoming detrimental to your possible treatment, it is essential to knowexactly what condition you suffer from. The common conditions that areconfused with Bell's Palsy are:

• Sarcoidosis• Cancer• Diabetes• Lyme disease• Myasthenia gravis• Facial tumors

• Guillain Barre• AIDS

Luckily there are various tests than can be performed to determinewhether you have Bell's Palsy, or one of the above conditions.

One likely test that will be performed during your diagnosis is thehearing and balance test. The reason for the hearing and balance test is todetermine whether or not there is damage to the inner ear, but also includestests of taste and tear-duct performance.

They will almost certainly perform an EMG as this is effective atchecking the facial nerves ability to transmit signals. As the ability totransmit the signals is a large determining factor in the diagnosis, it isobviously an important test. Knowing whether the brain is sending theelectrochemical signals, or the nerves are failing to transmit the information is one of the main things used in your diagnosis, as it sets Bell's Palsy sufferers apart from stroke victims.

Possible Causes

Unfortunately it is not been definitively proven what causes Bell's Palsy, but medical research has managed to link it occasionally to the herpes virus. The virus may lie inactive deep in the facial nerve and cause swelling when it“wakes up.” This then causes pressure on the facial nerve which may lead tothe symptoms we have discussed.

The brain sends electrical signals to the muscles in the face via the facialnerve. The one that is affected by Bell's Palsy is usually the seventh cranialnerve.

Bell's Palsy Treatment

If these signals are disrupted in anyway then this will have an affect on your facial muscles, and occasionally, depending on the extent of the injury to the nerve, can have an affect on your speech, hearing and balance.

Some people may experience a mild weakness while others may have complete paralysis of one side of their face. This pressure on the facial nerves is not only caused by Bell's Palsy, and can also be the result of the following conditions.

• Lyme Disease• Tuberculosis(TB)• Diabetes• A Tumor pressing on the facial nerve• Pregnancy• Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

However if it is a very mild case of Bell's Palsy then your condition mayeventually improve. A lot of times the condition will resolve itself on its own, however there are times when treatment is necessary. For most peoplesuffering from Bell's Palsy the eye is the area they they should be most careful about in regards to treatment.

If the paralysis has affected the eyelid muscle it is vitally important toensure that the eye itself is well lubricated. This could mean using dropsregularly and some people often go so far as to tape the eyelid shut at night to prevent it from drying out. It is very important to keep the eye moist as it is this moisture barrier that protects the cornea from abrasion from the innersurface of the eyelid while you blink. Without it severe and even permanentsight damage can occur.

Conventional & Natural Treatments

Conventional TreatmentThere are a number of conventional treatments that can help suffers ofBell's Palsy, and it is important to determine which is best for you.

Curcumin a.k.a. (Diferuloylmethane) is a phytochemical derived fromthe spice turmeric, and until recently would have been counted exclusively asa natural remedy. Recent tests completed within the last few weeks have notonly proven once and for all that Curcumin does help with Bell's Palsy. However it has made even more of a stir because they have just proven thatthe biological agents actually attack and brake down cancer cell walls.

Due to these new findings there may soon be an excessive demand placed upon manufactures, but for now it can still be obtained online as Vedic Relief.

Anti-viral drugs may be used if it believed that the root cause of yourBell's Palsy is a dormant herpes virus. Because herpes causes swelling thatmay damage the nerves, it can in some cases be used to stop the herpes frommaking your problems any worse.

Corticosteroids like prednisone are often used to reduce swelling. Assuch they are often used to prevent further swelling, and to help with thepressure the nerves are currently experiencing.

Botox can be used to stop spasms, and this is sometimes important incases were eye spasms threaten the health of the eye. Botox is readily available and is usually used by injection to the eyelid. However, if a Bell's Palsy sufferer is particularly troubled by other facial spasms, it can also be used in these areas.

Vitamin B12 injections have been seen to protect the overall health ofnerves, whilst also helping with nerve inflammation.

Surgery can sometimes be used to repair the damaged nerve tissue, or insome cases reroute the signals. Other forms of surgery include re-constructive work to remove the drooping of the facial features, and even plastic surgery of the eyelids. The eyelid repairs are done primarily to ensure that the eyelid can close properly, as this is important to stop infections within the eye.

Bell's Palsy Treatment

Natural TreatmentThe more natural treatments for Bell's Palsy are no less efficient in thantheir way than their more contemporary counter parts. Many people haveused natural methods of treatment with great success, but the best way to use them is in combination with the conventional drugs.

Physiotherapy has been used for a long time because of its obviousbenefits to Bell's Palsy sufferers. Physiotherapy main function is to retrain the brain to get control over a part of the body.

Acupuncture is another great way to reroute the nerves systems, but itsfull potential is still being discovered. The largest problem with acupuncture,is that its practitioners often claim it is good for everything. Unfortunatelythis has lead to a general distrust of acupuncture itself. What is proven ofacupuncture is that it does help to stimulate the nervous system in the treated area, and certainly with Bell's Palsy this must be considered advantageous.

Facial Therapy is another relatively new technique, but one built onsolid foundations. It has long been known that if you concentrate andexercise a part of the body that doesn't move, you can often learn to controlit. A great example of this is children who physically wiggle their ears andkeep trying to do it by muscle power alone. After a while they will be able toflap their ears under their own power, and the reason is that the nervoussystem has rerouted some control to previously unused muscles. In the caseof Bell's Palsy, the muscles you are trying to control are already active, and itis just the a case of getting the brain to reroute the signals.

Page 17: Bell's Palsy Treatment

Bell's Palsy Treatment

As it is so simple to physically move your face with your hands; whilst trying to control the slack parts of your face, you will find it a cheap and easy therapy you can perform at home.

Facial massage is very similar to the technique mentioned above, butinvolves other people massaging your face. As mentioned above, the morephysical interaction your face has, the faster your nervous system will heal orreroute.

Herbal remedies there are a number of herbs and remedies that havebeen claimed to help with Bell's Palsy. These include: Aconite,Valerian, St.John’s Wort, Avena sativa, Gelsemium and Causticum. It it hard to determine the actual effects of most herbal remedies, but the key benefits are clearly to stimulate the senses, and thereby stimulate the nervous system.

Managing Bell's Palsy

There are many things you can do to make your Bell's Palsy moremanageable, and better controlled. In this section we shall look at some ofthe things you can do, starting today, to improve your situation.

If you actually follow the advice in this section you should see anoticeable improvement in your condition, however I do need to point outthat these are not miracle cures. While these treatments will help, they willstill take some time to show their full benefit.

Exercise regularly and your over all health will improve. Healthierpeople heal faster, and the endorphins exercise causes will help to keep upyour spirits.

Bell's Palsy Treatment

Eat well, and by this I mean a healthy full but balanced diet. It hasbeen proven that eating a balanced diet aids in the recovery of many parts ofthe body, and this includes the nervous system.

Meditate, and yes I know this may seem silly but it really helps. Thereason is simply because meditation reduces stress, and stress as we know is amajor stumbling block to a healthy recovery. Meditation in its pure form hasno religious connections, and is merely you sitting comfortably in a quiteplace, and thinking of absolutely nothing until you feel calm and relaxed.

Vitamin supplements B12 and B6 promote nerve tissue regrowth, and ifyou take a zinc supplement as well this will be beneficial. Zinc is used in thegrowth of the nervous system, so can be seen in some ways as adding somenecessary fuel to your recovery.

Facial massage is very beneficial for sufferers of Bell's Palsy, so Irecommend adding some facial exercises and massage to your daily routine.

Goggles can be useful. When you take a shower, or even when it rains, you have trouble with water going in your weaker eye. To solve this problemyou can wear goggles when in the shower, and bring some with you in case of rain. I also suggest a hat, as the brim can be very useful to keep rain fromrunning in your eye.

Padding is very useful under your eye patch. There is a risk of dust andgrit getting in under your eye patch, but if you use something like cottonwool as padding it will keep them out.

Page 20: Bell's Palsy Treatment

Bell's Palsy Treatment

Also the pressure from the cotton wool on your eye will be greatly beneficial in making sure that your covered eye stays closed.

Straws are very useful when you are drinking, as it can be hard to drinkfrom a cup in the normal way. Sometimes your lesser control over one side of your mouth will enable some of your drink to spill out, but with a straw the sucking action causes a vacuum effect that keeps your mouth closed.

Curcumin is just really starting to be noticed for the full potential it has.Until very recently is was assumed that curcumin was relatively helpful butnothing special.

However, recent studies in London during the start of 2010 have shown that it has some extraordinary properties, both beneficial for Bell's Palsy and Cancer sufferers alike. The best source of active curcumin is the product Vedic Relief, which I highly recommend you look into.

Up to half of Bell's Palsy sufferers, will recover within a few weeks ifthey look after themselves. This figure should give you some hope, but don'tforget that this does depend on how the nerves have been damaged. If youhave a latent strain of herpes, you will first need to cure the problem beforeyour swelling stops pressing on the nerves.

If you are Diabetic you have a slightly higher chance of a relapse, soeven if you have dealt with the problem, I still suggest you work on buildingup your nervous system.

The Natural Path

As you will have noticed, there is some blurring of the line betweenorthodox medicine and natural medicine. Don't forget that most modernmedicines are usually based around what was natural treatments. You willhave noticed how treatments like massage slowly get swallowed by orthodoxmedicine, and renamed as physical therapy. Back as far as caveman timespeople chewed willow bark when they had ahead ache, but today we extractthe aspirin.

A large part of the problems and benefits concerning the modern waythat medicine is used, can be traced back to the clinical trials stage of theirdevelopment. When a new medicine is to be accepted and released to thepublic, it must first be proven not only that it works, but also why it works.

©Copyright 2010 • Michael Koschitz • Bell's Palsy Treatment • Vedic Relief Page 21

Page 22: Bell's Palsy Treatment

Bell's Palsy Treatment

To understand how this affects what is available to you consider thatJapan has now had a treatment for cancer for 4 years, they are unable torelease it as a mainstream treatment because they cannot adequately explainwhy it works. The tragedy is that unless the manufacturer can explain why itworks, it doesn't help just proving that it works.

Natural medicine doesn't rely on anywhere near the rigorous testing, and this is both good and bad. To start with you have the fact that if it worksit will probably go into production, but the negative aspect is that as a naturalremedy, people will take it less seriously. There has been a prejudice bydoctors against natural medicine in the past, but thankfully this is starting tolesson. The problem doctors have with natural medicines, is largely that theingredients are readily available without their prescription.

Natural remedies can be used in conjunction with conventionalmedicine, and this is probably the best route to take. However, somemedicines themselves are changing sides. Consider curcumin, it was viewedmore as a n alternative medicine for a long time, but now is considered amain stream treatment. How did it do though? Well the answer was it gotmore thoroughly tested, but are we to assume the people who had been using it before the testing were getting lesser results than those after the tests. You see natural and herbal remedies are often only separated from conventional testing, due to not being properly understood, and examined yet.

Regardless whether you decide to use all natural treatments, all orthodox treatments or a combination of the two, I recommend you cross nothing off until you have properly explored your options.

Self Esteem Issues

Another issue it is important to address is your self esteem.

Unfortunately the symptoms of Bell's Palsy can easily lead to a poor selfimage, and this in itself is a medical problem. It has proven many times thathappy people recover more quickly, but unfortunately it is very easy to feelself concious when suffering from Bell's Palsy.

My advice is that you should view your temporary condition as alearning experience. Don't be afraid to go out in public, as everyone is sick atsometime or another. The important thing is to take the opportunity todiscover who your real friends.

Bell's Palsy Treatment

Having Bell's Palsy is an advantage if you let it be. During your life youwill have many experiences, and some will be good and some bad. Theimportant thing to consider is what you can learn from this. Luckily Bell'sPalsy is treatable but many other conditions aren't. Consider this as the viewbehind the looking glass, and take the opportunity to find out who really canlook behind the surface. After all you will have plenty of time lookingcompletely normal again, but this is your one chance to find out who yourreal friends are, and what they are made of.

If you are having trouble coping with the emotional issues of yourcondition, go and see a therapist. Some people have a natural dislike of theidea of talking about their problems, and as you would expect this is moreprevalent in men than women. However, talking to a professional really canhelp you get through this, so I recommend if you are having difficulty coping you book yourself a consultation. Just remember that you are the same person underneath, and your condition is treatable.

Conclusions

I need to stress yet again that reading this guide is not a substitute for visiting a professional. However there are some things you can take away from this guide, and apply to your own situation.

I would like to recommend Vedic Relief at this point, as its advantages are becoming more apparent all the time. The main ingredient that really captures my interest is curcumin, as this has now been proven to help with a whole host of issues, ranging from Bell's Palsy to two types of cancer.

While I am certainly no advocate of miracle cures, it would certainly seem there is something to this one.

Make sure that you continue to do your facial exercises as these really dohelp. Try and make a routine that you can stick to, like one hours exercisefollowing your dinner etc... It is important to make an actual appointmentwith yourself, because otherwise you will forget.

Lastly I would leave you with a quote by Bobb Marley:

“Don't worry, be happy,” because your condition really is treatable, but it is important to keep your spirits high.

Nothing will slow your recovery more than allowing despondency and negativity to creep into your mind, so make an effort to do something you enjoy every day.
