Body Cavities

Page 4: Bellringer :

Two Internal Sets of Body Cavities:

• Dorsal– Cranial and spinal cavity

• Ventral– Thoracic and Abdominopelvic cavity

Page 5: Bellringer :

Useful Terms:

• Viscera– The organs in the ventral cavity

• Pleural Cavities– Houses the lungs (part of ventral cavity)

• Mediastinum– Contains pericardial cavity

Cardial or Cardiac = HEART!

Page 6: Bellringer :

Useful Terms:

• Mediastinum (cont)– Superior and Inferior– Superior houses esophagus, trachea, others

• Diaphragm– Muscle that separates thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities

• Pelvic Cavity– Houses bladder, reproductive organs, rectum– Tips into pelvis

Page 7: Bellringer :

Play Dough Cavities! On your torso models: • You will mold:– Thoracic, Abdominal, Pelvic, Superior and Inferior

Mediastinum, both Pleural, and Vertebral cavities.

• You will Label– Cranial cavity, Diaphragm, Ventral, Dorsal, and

abdominopelvic cavities (in brackets)

Color Matters!

Time to get Serous…

• Serous Membrane– AKA serosa– Covers walls of ventral cavity and outer surfaces of

organs– Double-layered membrane

Page 9: Bellringer :
Page 10: Bellringer :

Two Parts:

• Parietal Serosa– Lines cavity walls

• Visceral Serosa– Covers organs

• Serous Fluid– Secreted by both membranes; lubricant

Serosa Gloves

Objective: Make a model of the serosa using latex gloves.
