OUR MISSION

Reflecting the spirit of Christ’s love, Bellewood reclaims,

educates and empowers struggling youth and their families

to lead healthy, independent lives through supportive

services and a caring staff.

OUR VISION

Create a culture in Kentucky where formerly abandoned,

abused or neglected youth are connected to caring adults

and families and stay connected in supportive relationships,

developing life skills that help them achieve self-sufficiency.

Sometimes it’s easy for us to fall into the trap of not seeing the forest for

the trees. We do so much work so quickly that until we take a step back

and examine our efforts, we don’t realize how much we’ve progressed.

As I look back on this past fiscal year, I am deeply proud of our work

to change lives and build futures for young people and families across

Kentucky. This year Bellewood cared for 570 young people in the state.

Three of Bellewood’s four programs experienced enrollment increases.

Additionally, you will see we heightened our profile across the state, region

and nation with more media coverage on our work and special events.

Our volunteer base more than tripled this year, from 175 people to

more than 600 individuals supporting our mission by offering their

time and talents.

As you glance through this report, remember that you helped make

our remarkable accomplishments possible. Thank you for your time,

talent and financial support. Together, we are stopping the cycle of

abuse and neglect while building a brighter

future for Kentucky’s most vulnerable youth.

Jerry CantrellPresident and CEO

With great pride, I write to you my final note as Bellewood’s President

of the Board, a role I have been honored to serve since 2007.

Over the years, my relationship with Bellewood has deepened, and I am

proud to play a integral part in carrying out its 163-year-old mission. Be

proud of Bellewood, as I am, when you see our outcomes in this annual report.

We share the celebration of our achievements with you because you

helped make our dream a reality.

I continue to advocate for Bellewood, assuming new responsibilities on

the Board of Directors, and am excited for the new board chair, Reed

Farley, a former Bellewood youth, who takes his new role in leading the

agency in 2012.

On the topic of leading this organization, I ask you to take a moment to

think about something new you can bring to Bellewood this year that will

make an even larger impact on Kentucky’s youth and families who are

experiencing abuse, neglect and homelessness.

Bellewood is performing incredible and critical

work, and just as I am a bigger part of it, I

invite you to be a part of it, too.

R. Harvey Johnston IIIImmediate Past Chair

This year Bellewood cared for 570 children and young adults in Kentucky. Our scope of services take youth from cradle to career, offering them the protection, education, love and hope they need to become self-sufficient adults. This is made possible by our donors, volunteers, foundations and businesses that contribute to our mission. We are proud of our results in the 2010-2011 year and share them with you here.

GROWTH AND REACH

Prevention Services

We are proud of the significant 54 percent increase in this program which equips parents of unstable families with the skills they need to manage their homes and children.

Therapeutic Foster Care

Building upon the great success of last year, this program continues to grow. With a 16 percent enrollment increase, more children and families than ever are involved in our therapeutic foster care program which provides youth with a safe home and offers foster parents the guidance they need to properly care for their child.

Residential Care

When young ones come to live with us, they bring their turbulent past with them. On our residential campus, they find the safety and stability they need to overcome their burdens and move toward a bright adulthood. We are proud of the 10 percent increase in this program as we take youth from chaos to comfort.

Independent Living

This essential program protects and guides young adults in the years where they can be most vulnerable. Although there was a decrease in youth served, the quality of care in this important program has not altered.

Winter Warm-up Soup Luncheon

People in Paducah beat the bleak winter weather during our third annual Winter Warm-Up Soup Luncheon in January 2011 at First Presbyterian Church. More than 500 guests enjoyed savory soups and delectable desserts on a very snowy day.

Special thanks to Applebee’s, Artisan Kitchen, Doe’s, JP’s Grill, Kircoff’s, Pork Peddler, Serenitea, Sulli’s, Super Valu, The Gold Rush, The Pasta House, Ryan’s and Whaler’s Catch for donating soup and supplies. An army of volunteers helped organize the event, and we are as grateful for them as we are the hundreds of people who attended.

Bellewood’s accomplishments come small and large across the state. We’re proud of our achievements made possible by staff, volunteers and donors. Here are some highlights taking a look back at the year.

A LOOK BACK

The Spirit to Succeed

In March 2011, we hosted our third annual Youth Film Festival, challenging young people ages 12-18 in Kentucky to create a short film for competition. Doubling the entries from the previous year, 21 films were submitted reflecting the festival’s theme, “The Spirit to Succeed.”

Bowling Green High School’s “American Spirit of Gritification” and Sarah Downes’ “Steps to Success” tied for first place, each taking home the $500 grand prize. Jackson Power and Ryan Fuquey’s film “Grit” placed second, and “Cul-de-sac Kid” from Fourth Presbyterian Youth Group won third. Honorable mention went to a group from Noe Middle School for “Striving for Perfection.”

KET featured selections from our festival in August and September on their program “Reel Visions.” Thanks to our sponsors and young filmmakers for making the festival a success with more than 250 guests!

A Day Away at Camp

It was an exhilarating experience for our young people when the family of budding actress Jennifer Lawrence invited them to their Camp Hi Ho for a day of fun. Many of our youth learned to boat, fish and even swim for the first time here. Outdoor sports and an all-American cookout were part of the day as well.

Taking Center Stage

After a successful first year, BelleWoodstock, our competition for young singers, musicians and bands, returned in October with 28 children competing for grand prize - a chance to perform at the famous Bluebird Café in Nashville.

Held at the Capitol Theatre in Bowling Green, 17 acts performed a variety selections to a crowd of 300. Austin Wilson and the Take-It-Easy Buddies received grand prize as well as a session with Studio DD Recording.

Congratulations and thanks to all the performers! We hope to see you again in 2012. A large thanks goes to our sponsors for making the event possible.

Sprucing Up Our Spaces

Thanks to the Warren County Public School employees on United Way’s Day of Caring in July. These hard workers made a portion of our administrative office in Bowling Green more kid friendly with fresh paint and some colorful wall art.

Employees from the PC (USA) Headquarters transformed our lobby and hallways in Louisville for Mayor Fischer’s “Give a Day” week. It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do. Thanks to both groups for making our workspace more warm and welcoming!

A LOOK BACK

Tee Time

On a beautiful September day, 76 golfers were on the green at Long Run Golf Course for the annual scramble benefitting our Independent Living program. We thank our sponsors, staff and participants for the $4,000 raised. A special thanks to Absolute Networking Systems for their ongoing support; Kohl’s Cares: Associates in Action for their sponsorship and volunteers; and Golf Headquarters for participant prizes.

Barking for Bellewood

Our second Anchorage Dog Show was held in October with great success. On a sunny afternoon, 76 dogs of varying breeds competed for the coveted Best in Show. The family-friendly event was followed with an outdoor screening of Disney’s “101 Dalmatians.” Thanks to the Anchorage community for their support as well as all the sponsors. Congratulations to the Ensor family and their dog Lulu for winning Best in Show!

Batting for Bellewood

Bowling Green’s minor league team, The Hot Rods, are ardent supporters of Bellewood, and this spring they gave $1 of every ticket sold for their May 18 game to Bellewood as part of their Facebook Fans Night contest. Bellewood’s fans deserve an equal pat on the back for their support of the contest by getting Bellewood and the Hot Rods the most mentions, likes and status updates, winning the contest for Bellewood.

Grow-to-Go Garden

This summer a remarkable transformation took place on our residential campus when a group of dedicated volunteers worked directly with our youth to plant vegetable gardens and begin a farmer’s market for Bellewood. More than 106 tomato plants in addition to squash, peppers, zucchini, potatoes, watermelon and cucumbers were planted, grown, harvested and sold to the public throughout the growing season.

Our youth learned the importance of healthy eating as well as the results of dedicated labor in the therapeutic setting of the gardens. The volunteers became their friends and supporters, while the community got closer to Bellewood every Saturday at our roadside farmer’s market, which raised more than $5,000. This has been a thrilling experience for everyone while our youth ‘grow to go’ in the community as solid adults. We thank the volunteers, businesses and the community at-large for supporting this transformational initiative.
