Issue 50, Volume 2 Issue 50, Volume 2 LENT BEGINS ON MARCH 5
“I invite you in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent,
by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self denial;
and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word.”
You are invited and encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities to observe a holy Lent.
Ash Wednesday
The Holy Eucharist and Imposition of Ashes will take place at 9:30 am and 7:00 pm on March 5. As usual, this is a joint service with St. Mark Lutheran Church. This year we use the Episcopal service and our preacher will be Pastor Brian.

Lenten Soup Supper Series - “Interfaith Exploration of Women in Ministry”
The role of women in Islam, Judaism, Christian Orthodoxy, the Catholic Church, and our own Episcopal tradition will be the topic of our annual Thursday evening Lenten Soup Supper programs this spring. The interfaith series will feature two area professors, two Episcopal clergywomen, a Roman Catholic nun, and an Orthodox laywoman. The schedule is:
March 13 - Sr. Jan Renz, ASC, Women’s Ministries in Roman Catholicism March 20 - Professor Nancy Berg, Washington University, Exercising Gift for Ministry in Judaism March 27 - Professor Gulten Ilhan, St. Louis Community College-Meramec, Women in Islam April 3- Didi Kafka, Women’s Roles and Ministry in Christian Orthodoxy April 10 - The Rev. Suzanne Wolfenbarger and the Rev. Deacon Jody Coleman, Women’s Ministries in
the Episcopal Church.
As in past years, a simple soup supper at 6:00 pm will precede the presentations at 7:00 pm, all in the parish hall. Please sign up to bring your favorite soup, breads, or relishes. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the parish hall. A freewill offering will support local outreach ministries. And child care will be provided!

Lenten Adult Forum explores “Aids to the Spiritual Life”
Many of us yearn for spiritual growth, but sometimes we don’t know what our own role in this process is or where we can turn for help. Responding to interest expressed in the RenewalWorks survey last spring, during the six Sunday mornings of Lent St. George’s Adult Forum will explore aids for a spiritual life in a series designed to support us as we strive to grow in faith and discipleship.

one hour!
The Tuesday Evening Bible Study will continue through Lent. Everyone is invited to join Joe & Carol Hooten in a study of the Letter to the Ephesians on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm in Room 6.
An inventory of church assets needs to be completed and anyone interested in helping is asked to contact Joe Hooten. Also, Joe is interested in input from anyone who may have helped with the last inventory, which was in the mid 1990s. Joe can be reached at 618.567.9693.
Open House - Elisabeth Weilbacher has worked at Toddhall for 28 years, and now she is – no, not retiring – inviting everyone to an Open House in the Wilson Conference Room at Toddhall to help celebrate her 80th birthday! The Open House takes place on March 16 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
St. Mark Lutheran Church invites everyone to the seventh annual Schaaf Memorial Lecture Saturday, March 8, at 2:00 pm in the church. This year’s speaker is the Rev. Dr. Mark Wegener, who will lecture on the topic, “Jesus and Justice: A Question of Values.” Admission is free. A brief reception will be held immediately following the lecture.
The SHINE Eucharist takes place the first Sunday of every month at 5:00 pm in the church. Pastor Brian Robison is the preacher and celebrant, and we use the Joy music book. Everyone is welcome to join us!
We will need to cleanup our grounds before Easter. So get your rakes, clippers, shovels, etc ready and start looking for a scheduled Saturday work day as we approach Easter.
