What is Community Education?

Community Education operates with the belief that schools belong to the entire community and should serve all residents by providing lifelong learning opportunities.

It is the goal of Community Education to identify the needs of the Belle Plaine community and provide corresponding educational and recreational experiences for all ages by utilizing available resources. Community Services strives to communicate our offerings by mailing brochures to all households, providing a weekly column in the Belle Plaine Herald, the Community Education Website (www.belle-plaine.k12.mn.us) and by listing activities on channel 8 of the local cable service.

If inclement weather forces the District #716 schools to start late, morning Tiger Kids Preschool and ECFE class will be cancelled. Afternoon and evening classes and activities will meet as sched-uled. If school is cancelled all Community Education, Tiger Kids Preschool and ECFE class and activities will be cancelled. All facilities will be closed as well. If school is dismissed early all Community Education, Tiger Kids Preschool and ECFE class and activities for the remainder of the day and evening are cancelled. All facilities will be closed as well. Emergency school closings can be found at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us and with messages from the district instant alert system. Announcements can also be found on television channels KSTP 5, KARE 11, WCCO 4 and Channel 8.

Where To Register** You can register online at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You can also phone, fax, or mail in your registration. Payment must be received with registration.

Registration Policy ** To register for a Community Ed class, program or trip complete the form on page 5. Then either register online, call in your registration, or deliver it to the Community Ed Office. Once you register, you are responsible for following the registration, cancellation, and facilities policies. **Payment is required prior to start of any class, program or trip.

Cancellation Policy ** If you are unable to attend a class, program or trip you registered for, please call the Community Ed Office at (952) 873-2411 to cancel your reservation. Cancellation refunds will either be issued as a check or in the form of a class credit.

Tiger Kids Preschool

Tiger Kids Preschool offers a variety of preschool activi-ties within a stimulating early childhood environment. The Tiger Kids Preschool program curriculum is based on a weekly theme that emphasizes fun, self-esteem building, social skills and school readiness designed to promote the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of 3-5 year old children. Tiger Kids Preschool is held in the Chatfield Elementary School.

Kids Company is a program for elementary age school children offered before and after school and during the summer months at Chatfield Elementary School. The program is designed to meet the needs of parents who work earlier or later than regular school hours. Kids Company provides a safe, supervised recreational and enriching play environment for children, kindergarten through sixth grade. The staff, program and facilities create a warm and secure environment for channeling the child’s energies and meeting individual needs. Activities include arts and crafts, reading, nature activities, sports, games, relaxing, movies, field trips, special events and more. NOT OPEN holiday break and spring break. The Belle Plaine Community Education Drivers Education program is for students, ages 15 - 18, who live or attend school within Belle Plaine School District 716. The driver’s educa-tion program includes classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training.

Classroom Instruction: 30 HoursClassroom includes lecture, class discussion, videos, written work from the textbook and written tests. Upon completion, students will be issued a blue card.

Behind-the-Wheel (BTW): 6 HoursBehind-the-Wheel allows a student to practice driving on public streets and highways with an instructor in a dual control (two brake) car. Please come in or call Community Education and sign up for Behind-the-Wheel. Priority will be given to students based on age. If a student does not receive Behind-the-Wheel immediately after their class, please contact Community Education to be placed on a list once you have received your permit. There is a $20.00 per hour charge to make up for a missed Behind-the-Wheel session. You MUST call the in-structor or the Community Ed office 952-873-2411 at least 24 hours prior to cancel an appointment. Upon completion of behind-the-wheel, students will be issued a white card. A lost or misplaced white card will cost $10.00 to replace.

TROPICAL FISH (NEW!)

Create a Tropical fish of your choice using the pinch pot and slab technique. Bring in a picture of a fish you would like to create or choose from the pictures I have in the classroom. After finish-ing the clay fish you will add color by using a variety of colorful glazes.

Using our slab roller and a milk carton, students will learn to create a house out of clay. Use your imagination to add extra details to your house. YOUTH FIREARMS SAFETY CLASS

Students will obtain a better understanding of their obligation to the re-sources, the landowner, other hunters, non-hunters and to themselves. The Department of Natural Resources is responsible for formulating the course of instruction and designating “competent persons or organizations to give such instruction”. Parents must complete the registration/permission form at the first class. Parents are encouraged to attend all classes. Students MUST attend all classes. Minnesota law specifies that any person born on or after January 1, 1980 applying for a MN Hunting License must show proof of successfully completing a firearms safety training course provided by the DNR. Students must be 12 years old by the upcoming fall deer hunting season (November 3). TIGER CUBS BASKETBALL

The Tiger Cubs Basketball Program is for boys and girls in Kindergarten thru 2nd grade. The program goal is to introduce and develop basic basketball skills. Each practice will conclude with a short game and fun activity. Tennis shoes are required and should be carried in. Kindergarten and first graders receive a basketball and second graders receive a t-shirt.

ZUMBA!! AEROBICS

Zumba, it’s the hottest aerobic fitness craze, that’s all about dancing, party-style, to exhilarating music. 55 ALIVE DEFENSIVE DRIVING

Drivers, age 55 and over, may qualify for a 10% discount on their auto insurance premium by taking a 4 or 8 hour course. Four hour courses are for those who have taken the class before. Eight hour courses are for individuals taking the class for the first time. Many safe driving topics will be covered. All classroom instruction is by AARP volunteer instructors. “FOLLOW THE BONE” DEER CUTTING

This class will teach you the basic skills to cut your own deer and cook your deer. We will show you the proper care of the deer - do the actual field dressing, skinning, and cleaning of the carcass. Next we will show you how to cut your deer, from pulling back straps for chops, to the hind for roasts and jerky and trim for ground venison to sausage. We show each primal and talk about how to cut it and cook it - what the best practice for each piece to cook it for the best end results. We have added cooking instructions to our classes - This 2-hour class has about 45 minutes dedicated to cooking the venison for the perfect dry tasteless deer - NOT. We will identify which cuts are better on the grill and tips on how to not over cook venison on the grill to avoid the dry steak. We will have a road kill deer for hands-on experience. TWIN CITY MODEL RAILROAD MUSEUM

Located in historic Bandana Square, the Twin City Model Railroad Museum is an exquisitely detailed model panorama of railroads of the Twin Cities during the 1930′s, 1940′s and 1950′s. ST PETER SWEDISH ART EXHIBIT AT GUSTAVUS ADULPHUS

The Hillstrom Museum of Art on the Gustavus Adolphus Campus presents “150 Years of Swedish Art.” The 44 pieces on display are from two of the most prestigious art museums in Sweden - the National Mu-seum and the Modern Museum in Stockholm. While on campus, we will see Christ Chapel and the Paul T. Granlund sculptures. Christ Chapel is located in the center of campus as a symbol of the central place of faith at this church-related college. Each of the four entrances to the Chapel are graced with bronze sculptures and friezes by Paul T. Granlund. The four narthexes honor four Gustavus presidents.We will then have lunch at Whiskey River Emporium, situated along the Minnesota River. Our menu is half sandwich, cup of homemade soup, beverage and a small dessert. After lunch, we will meet a lo-cal guide and take a riding tour of St. Peter and hear about the culture of this village and the changes that have taken place over the years. It has been a gathering place from bluff to river bottom. Founded in 1853, it has retrained a historic community flavor and there are over forty sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After a stop at Lanette’s Mercantile in Montgomery, we arrive at the Liberty Restaurant in Red Wing for lunch. Welcome Back!

Wow!! Summer went so fast and I cannot believe that we are about to start the 2012-2013 School Year. I hope everyone was able to take some time to sit back and enjoy some time with family and friends.

We are all excited to start a new year and catch up with everyone in classes. ECFE classes will begin on September 10. We are hoping to see everyone at the Back to School Bash at the Purple Park on Friday, September 7 or at the Vehicle Fair on Thursday, September 20. We will also bring back the popular Costume Party in October and Holiday Express in December so be sure to check out all of these events.

In addition to the special events are all the classes. Please be sure to check out the new classes like Take a Break! and the Yoga Classes. If you have a child under 1 year of age be sure to check out the Come and Play Baby Day. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and get some helpful tips.

What is ECFE? Early Childhood Family Education is a state funded program that is run through Belle Plaine Community Education. ECFE works to begin an effective and satisfying school-home partnership. We offer regular series classes and special events for ALL families with children ages birth to pre-kindergarten. ECFE strives to help build positive parent-child relationships.

Who is ECFE for? ECFE is for any and all moms, dads, and their children (birth to pre-kindergaten). Whether you are a single parent, a teen parent, a stay at home parent, a grandparent, a guardian, or even a daycare provider you are invited to come to our classes with your child/children.

Why should I come to ECFE? ECFE focuses on age-appropriate child development as well as parent and family education. Being a mom or dad is one of the most important jobs you will ever have. Come and share information with other parents about raising your child/children. Come to learn more about your child/children and you. Come to meet other parents and learn that you are not alone in the many joys and challenges of raising children.

Where is ECFE? All Belle Plaine ECFE classes are located at 330 South Market Street at Chatfield Elementary.

When are the ECFE classes? Classes are offered throughout the school year and you can choose from daytime classes or evening classes. Class listings are found in the Community Education bro-chure. If you have not received a brochure please call (952)873-2411. To register for classes go to www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us.

What about my other children? We offer sibling care to children not in series classes for a nominal fee. Children are under the care of experienced classroom assistants. The charge for registered chil-dren per session is $25.00. Sibling Care is not available for Special Events. Drop in slots are available for $5, but we must have a one day notice to ensure proper teacher-child ratios. Siblings will join the class for snack and remain in the classroom the remainder of class.

If your class fee has not been paid and you have not made other arrange-ments with Sheri you will be removed from the list and other families on the waiting list will take your spot. Payments can be made by check, cash or on-line by credit card. The sliding fee scale applies to all regular weekly classes. READERS WORKSHOP

Some of our classes this year will have a focus book for 3-4 weeks. Research tells

us that repeated experiences help strength-en a child’s brain and so our goal for this concept is to give us a chance to look at

the book from different perspectives and a chance to dig deep and explore the story.

Each class of this type will have new activities each week, but the book at group

time will be the same.

Update

Last year PAC co-hosted the Fall Musician, the ECFE Costume Party and Holiday Express as well as headed up various fundrais-ers throughout the year. Each year PAC helps plan, organize and raise money for events made available to families in the Belle Plaine district. PAC would like to thank everyone that has sup-ported these events and fundraisers in the past and looks forward to more to come.

In addition to these special events, PAC would like to extend an invitation to all Belle Plaine families to join an ECFE class. Classes are offered for families of infants through pre-kindergarten age. These groups provide families with an opportunity to net-work with other families, as well as give their children a variety of social experiences. Many classes offer a parent/child experience as well as parent educator led parent time.

What is Early Childhood Screening (ECS)?In Minnesota, all children are required to complete a free Early Childhood Screening before they en-ter kindergarten. This is not a test that they need to pass to go to kindergarten, but instead it is a way to make sure your child is on track and to connect you to services that may be available to your child.

What Should I Expect at an ECS?Your child will visit a nurse to have his/her vision and hearing checked. After their visit with the nurse your child will go in and work with another person who will do the developmental screening. After your child is taken to the developmental screening room, the nurse will review general health and nutrition practices as well as immunization information with you. When the person that is doing the developmental screening is done with the assessment, they will come and get you to go over the information with you. You will also have a chance to ask any final questions at this time.

When Should I Schedule an ECS Appointment?You should schedule an appointment when your child is 3 ½ years old. We have found that this age works the best, as it allows us to provide you with information about early childhood programs and it allows us to provide your child with any services that they may need to get ready for kindergarten.

How Do I Schedule an ECS Appointment?You will need to call Rita at (952) 378-2454 to schedule an appointment. ECS appointments are available on Fridays from 8:00 am – 2:00 pm. The following are scheduled ECS dates for the 2012 - 2013 School Year.

TOY LENDING LIBRARYDid you know that we have a Toy Lending Library in our Community? If you didn’t you should go to the Belle Plaine Public Library to check it out. There is an assortment of items including book and prop combi-nations, puzzles, creative dramatic play, science, musical toys, com-puter games and audio CDs. Toys can be checked out for three weeks at a time and must be returned in clean and complete condition. This is a great opportunity to have special toys for grandchildren coming to visit or Daycare Providers to provide a unique experience for their daycare children. The information you provide will be confidential. All families are welcome to attend ECFE classes; no one will be denied access due to inability to pay fees. If you do not qualify for the sliding fee, based on income, but have other circumstances affecting your family, please contact the ECFE office to explore fee reduction op-tions. Immunizations. State law requires immunizations upon enrolling in the ECFE and School Readiness programs. Immu-nization files are not kept from year to year. Legal exemption from the law for medical reasons or conscientiously held beliefs is available by calling your doctor, clinic or health plan. Immunization forms MUST be returned to the ECFE offices on or before the first day of class.

Participant Questionnaire. This mandatory questionnaire should be completed one time per school year for each family enrolled in the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and/or School Readiness Program. Each family is asked to provide participation information that will be used for local and state program planning and evaluation. Only one family member should complete this questionnaire. The information you provide will be kept confidential and will not be directly connected with you or your family.
