Protestant Reformation: A protest and reform against the Catholic church lead by Martin Luther in the 16th century. Martin Luther disagreed and argued with the ways of the Catholic Church (indulgences).
Martin Luther & the Reformation
● Martin Luther, a monk from Wittenberg in Germany began to criticize the power and corruption of the Catholic church in 1517.
● Luther demanded reform!
Luther’s criticisms of the church: ● Indulgences - Paying for forgiveness
○ People could pay money to the church to have sins forgiven!
● Bible - was only written in Latin ○ Only people of the church could read Latin○ Commoners did not read Latin○ Nobody knew what the bible really said
95 Theses● Luther posted the 95 Theses or 95 Reasons the
church was corrupted on the door of the Wittenberg Church.
● A list of questions and propositions for debate
● In this protest, Luther gained followersknown as Protestants.
95 Theses● He questioned and challenged:
○ That God wanted believers to have faith and seek repentance, not just good deeds.
○ The practice of indulgences: Paying the church money to have your sins forgiven.
○ Power of the Pope
Gutenberg Bible● Luther then began to translate the
New Testament of the bible into German.
● Johannes Gutenberg invents the “Gutenberg Press” that allows books to be copied quickly!
● The translated bible is copied on the Gutenberg press.
● This spreads the idea of the reformation
