other over land claims in the New World?
Big Ideas-(Roanoke, Jamestown,
John White-Smith- Rolfe, Pocahontas)
FOUNDING OF THE ENGLISH COLONIES
THE ENGLISH DOMINATES THE NEW WORLD
THE FIGHT TO CLAIM THE NEW WORLD
ROANOKE ISLAND (NORTH CAROLINA)
First attempt was Roanoke –
Failed because:
First settlers were not reinforced fast enough (because
the war with Spain prevented this) ARMADA 1588
First settlers believed to have been attacked by the local
Indians.
Pirates tried to live here.
But what do they do????
The Lost Colony of Roanoke- VA- 1587
John White- His granddaughter (Virginia Dare)
What Happened?
He goes Home 1588.
He is held up by Queen Elizabeth
1590-he returns no one is there

John Smith- dealt with harsh conditions
John Rolfe- tobacco, Pocahontas goes to England
ROANOKE (NORTH CAROLINA)
ELIZABETH I IS TRIFFLIN
The daughter of HENRY VIII (1st PROTEST KING)
She takes the thrown after Mary I (half-sister) dies
Elizabeth used pirates (sea dogs) to cripple Spain's
(Phillip II) sea power.
Her sea dogs (Sir Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake)
help destroy the Spanish Armada.
Spain will not be a major power after the Armada is
destroyed
England will dominate, only rivaled by the French.
The Turkish slaves that came over with the
English look like this..
The Croatoan..
WHERE DID ROANOKE GO?????
JAMESTOWN
Drawback
Settlers were not FARMERS – were adventures
Were excellent to explore
Horrible to grow food.
No one could build homes
JAMESTOWN
John Smith - Captain
Provided strong Leadership to the “starving

Established friendly relations with the local
Indians (Powhatan Confederacy)

JAMESTOWN STRUGGLIN’
Why it struggled?
