MYP: Can you hear (OR SEE) me NOW?AOI: Health and Social EducationLearner Profile: InquirerEssential Question: What are waves?Standard: S8P4.Students will EXPLORE the wave nature of sound and electromagnetic radiation. A. Identify the characteristics of
electromagnetic waves and mechanical waves. Learning Target: Today I am learning about
the properties of waves, this is important because it will help me understand my world better.
Homework: Study for upcoming quiz on Friday.

Wave Basics Definition: A disturbance that transfers
ENERGY through matter OR empty space What causes waves: Waves are
created when a source of energy causes a medium to vibrate.
A vibration is a repeated back and forth or up and down motion.
Waves are classified by what they move through or on how energy moves through them.
![Page 8: Bell Ringer 3-17-14 Write the question and your answer](https://reader033.vdocuments.mx/reader033/viewer/2022051403/56816474550346895dd65907/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Classification based on what they move Through
Mechanical waves: waves that can ONLY move through a medium (through matter).. Mechanical waves require the particles of the medium to vibrate in order for energy to be transferred. They cannot travel through empty space!!
Electromagnetic waves: are waves that
can travel through matter or empty space where matter is not present.

NATURE OF WAVES- Do Not Write We now know that waves can be
mechanical or electromagnetic, but there are also 3 types of waves:
Three types of waves:*TRANSVERSE*LONGITUDINALSURFACE/WATER

Classification based on how energy moves through them.
Transverse waves- waves in which particles of the matter vibrate by moving in an up and down motion (move perpendicularly to the direction the wave is moving). Transverse waves are made up of
CRESTS and TROUGHSex: electromagnetic waves (light, x-ray)

Time to Practice Use your rope to demonstrate a
transverse wave:Work with a partnerOne of you move your end of the ROPE
back and forth (left and right, like a snake crawling), perpendicular to its stretched length.
The other student must hold his or her end of the ROPE still.
A series of transverse waves will be generated and will travel through a medium (ROPE)

LONGITUDINAL WAVES Particles vibrate parallel to (in the same
direction of) wave travel
