Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

Whether known as a tenacious horsewoman, seasoned traveler, dedicated philanthropist, or “best friend,” Amy Doris Bell touched lives across the world. This kind and generous young woman loved life and lived it to the fullest. Her sudden death last year left a void in the lives of her family and friends worldwide.

Amy was at the heart of the Bell family’s Kalpowar Quarter Horse operation and managed the breeding program. Amy’s love of the horse was in her blood. Her parents, Ellen and Larry Bell, have deep family roots in farming and ranching. Larry grew up in ranch country in eastern New Mexico. Ellen, the granddaughter of AQHA Past President Roy Parks Sr., has life-long interests in the cattle and the American Quarter Horse industry in West Texas. A lifelong rider, Amy discovered cutting and reined cow horse after college with the help of her beloved horse Hobby Five.

Philanthropy was a quiet but important part of Amy’s life. In her early twenties she established the Amy Doris Bell Fund at the Permian Basin Area Foundation, which supported agencies worldwide to provide education and wellness for children.

Amy loved to travel and took the lead on numerous sight-seeing and hunting trips to Africa, Europe and New Zealand.

On trips to Africa, she left “love gifts” to help support schools, health clinics and an orphanage. Wherever her travels took her, she looked for opportunities to “Pay It Forward.”

Larry says Amy was “living out her cowgirl dream - raising and showing horses, loving and serving her neighbor, especially children in need - that was her calling.”

The Bells will continue Amy’s legacy by establishing the Amy D. Bell “Pay It Forward” Memorial

Scholarship with the American Quarter Horse Foundation. Through this scholarship Amy’s passion and service to people and horses will live on and grow in the lives of young people. The recipients of this scholarship will be afforded an opportunity to “pay it forward” as they learn and grow into our future industry leaders.

Bell Scholarship details:If you or someone you know is interested in applying for the Amy D. Bell “Pay It Forward” Memorial Scholarship, the deadline is December 1, 2015. Applicants will be judged on academic achievement, financial need, American Quarter Horse involvement, leadership and communications skills, as well as civic involvement. The winning recipient will receive a $10,000 four-year scholarship.

Bell Family EncouragesYouth to “Pay It Forward”

Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

Jack SorensonJack Sorenson, signature artist for the 2015 America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale, has a sense of humor. And when he tells you that many of his paintings are based on his own childhood, you get the idea that he might have been a pretty ornery little boy.

Jack has been painting American Quarter Horses for 41 years. For his signature art show painting, “Mimbers Only,” Jack called on one of his favorite subjects, William Sugar Bars, a 2005 bay roan heading horse owned by Bill Cornett.

Jack loves doing renderings of mares and foals, and he also enjoys depicting the Old West. Jack is a prolific artist who is nearing 4,000 paintings, and he finds his satisfaction in simply doing what he was born to do.

In mid-August approximately 45 world-renown Western artists will provide more than 100 different pieces for purchase at the America’s Horse in Art Show & Sale benefitting the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame. Log on to aqha.com/AHIA by October 10th to purchase art pieces, high-quality prints of “Mimbers Only” by Jack Sorenson or printed catalogs. E-mail questions and inquiries to [email protected], or call the Hall of Fame at (806) 376-5181.

Each piece shares the passion all American Quarter Horse riders and owners claim as their own – the unspoken bond between horse and man.

Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

I can’t give much. Why bother?• Every gift regardless of the amount makes a difference.• When combined, many small gifts make a big

difference. For example, 25 gifts of $20 equal $500, which could fund one of our scholarships.

What is the deadline for making my gift? The deadline to make your gift each year is December 31, but if you make your gift today, you make a difference now.

Smart Little Lena was born in July 1979. Sired by Doc O’Lena and out of a Peppy San mare carrying the blood of Leo and Royal King, his future was no surprise; he was born to cut.

Smart Little Lena sired World Champions, Reserve World Champions, Register of Merit foals, and after proving themselves in the performance pen, his daughters are a force in the breeding shed, producing earners of over $5.5 million.

In the beginning, his breeder, Hanes Chatham, saw him as a sale colt, until a neighbor and cutting trainer, Bill Freeman, put the horse to cattle.

Chatham sold half ownership of his colt to Freeman, and in a burst of confidence based on Freeman’s assessment, they syndicated him. But a few months before the 1992 NCHA Futurity, the horse with all the promise ate blister beetle-infested hay.

It was touch and go for the little sorrel for a couple of days, and then three months to recover and get ready to prove himself.

He did, too. At the 1982 NCHA Futurity, Smart Little Lena made the finals with 19 other Doc Bar grandsons in a field of 23. He swept both rounds, was second in the semis by one point, and scored the first ever 225 in the finals to win the event and $264,085. With a win at the 1983 Super Stakes and another at the 1983 Derby, Smart Little Lena became the first horse to win the cutting horse world’s Triple Crown.

Our horses give their whole hearts and ask little in return. Your annual gifts are a special way of saying “thank you” to our horses and investing in their future. Without steady resources, the American Quarter Horse Foundation would not be able to

• help find cures for the ailments that plague our horses• develop youth into future industry professionals• help special-needs individuals overcome physical and

cognitive barriers with the assistance of a horse• share with future generations the legacy of the people

and horses that have shaped our breed.

How can I make an annual gift?• Online: aqha.com/donatetoday (select recurring gift

option to repeat gift monthly or annually) • Telephone: call 806-378-5029 with your credit card

information• Check: make payable to AQHF; mail to PO Box

32111, Amarillo, TX 79120-9971

Is my gift tax-deductible, and will I receive a receipt?Yes, in most cases the full value of your gift is tax-deductible, and you will receive an acknowledgement or gift receipt.

I pay my AQHA membership and registration fees. Why should I give more money?AQHA membership and registration fees do not support the Foundation. The Foundation relies on the generosity of our donors to continue improving the lives of people and horses.

Every Year, Every Gift Makes a Difference

Our horse puts his whole heart into his job. Put yours into his future.

Ambassador Spotlight Dee Ann Staley-Best has been a Foundation Ambassador more than five years. She and her family have a long standing tradition of honoring our fallen service men and women in Ohio’s Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade. This year marks the 42nd year Dee and her family have provided the “riderless horse” for the parade. The riderless horse honors those who have given their lives to keep us free.

Dee says, “It takes three days to get the horse ready, and it takes a special person to lead him. If your handler is good, then you have no problems. This year’s American Quarter Horse Powerful Time, aka Cruizer, was led by Sam Frazer who did an amazing job.” True to his breed’s versatile temperament, “Cruizer stood still for the 21 gun salutes through the entire parade and the Blue Angel Fly Over. He is a good boy!”

Dee laughs and continues, “Nine of the eleven horses used have been AQHA registered horses…since I took over from my dad, it has been nothing but AQHA Proud!”

This summer make time to teach the young people in your life about the meaning and importance of sacrifice, tradition and your AQHA pride. The time and knowledge we share with our youth today will pay off in the future when they become passionate stewards of their country and horses.

How do you and your American Quarter Horse celebrate freedom and AQHA? Send your story to [email protected] before September 18, 2015, for a chance to win a surprise gift.

Equine-assisted activities and therapies is a thriving industry which allows many American Quarter Horses the ability to help improve the quality of life for those with special needs. Through the EAAT Hippotherapy Scholarship, AQHA members pursuing a career in hippotherapy have an opportunity to get their degree and provide the much needed care and services for individuals with physical, cognitive or emotional limitations. This scholarship, courtesy of the Carl and Caroline Swanson Foundation, supports students going into the fields of mental health, physical or occupational therapies, and speech language pathology.

The Foundation’s vision is to foster educational opportunities for horse industry professionals. Facilitating the development of professionals who continuously raise the EAAT standard of practice will help ensure a brighter future for the entire equine industry.

For more information on the Foundation’s efforts to support education in EAAT, visit aqha.com/foundation.

“I saw the envelope and thought to myself, ‘Am I expecting anything from AQHA?’ I was truly surprised to open it and see ‘Congratulations’ and a bumper sticker with AQHF Scholarship Recipient. I was so excited! The first thing I did was text my mom to tell her about it. After the shock wore off, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. This is a great honor!”
