Coventry. 1979. A city of strife in the factories and violence on the streets. It’s hard being 16 – but something’s stirring in the garages and living rooms of the city. Music offers a way out for spiky Gary, posh boy Nick and cheeky Sonya. As industrial relations reach boiling point and Gary’s band takes its first few tentative steps, an act of shocking violence propels Nick, Sonya and Gary’s family towards a decision that will change all their lives forever.

Paul Robeson was a great and famous actor, singer and civil rights campaigner. When he got too radical and outspoken for the establishment’s liking, he was branded a traitor to his country, harassed and denied opportunities to perform or travel.

This rollercoaster journey through Robeson’s remarkable life highlights how his activism caused him to be disowned and disremembered, even by leaders and descendants of the civil rights movement. It features some famous songs and speeches, including a dramatic rendition of Ol’ Man River, and a spectacularly defiant testimony to the Senate House Un-American Activities Committee.

Issue: Autumn / Winter 2010 • www.belgrade.co.ukThe Belgrade Theatre’s Education Newsletter

Welcome...to the first edition of BelgradeED, the Belgrade’s Education Newsletter.

Our exciting Autumn/Winter 2010 Season is packed full of inspiring productions, including four Belgrade Theatre home produced shows, and a new show by the Belgrade Young Company, the latest offshoot from the Belgrade Community & Education Company.

Our upcoming work has a home-grown feel to it, as we celebrate our heritage with a trilogy of plays about Coventry’s history. We Love You City marks the victorious moment in 1987 when Coventry City FC won the FA Cup, and One Night in November returns to the Belgrade ahead of the 70th Anniversary of the Coventry Blitz in a new revival on the Main Stage. Completing the trilogy is Too Much Pressure, providing a snapshot of Coventry in 1979 – a time when the manufacturing industry was in decline and many young people were turning to music as a way out.

The Belgrade Theatre is also working in association with leading theatre companies this season to bring you I’m a Minger, Shakespeare’s Richard III, and our popular festive pantomime Cinderella.

Our visiting company programme is as exciting as ever with The House of Bilquis Bibi – an adaptation of Lorca’s House of Bernarda Alba, classic favourite Annie and Call Mr. Robeson which recalls the controversial life of singer, actor and civil rights campaigner Paul Robeson. We also welcome New Art Club, Britain’s funniest comedy dancers in their hilarious new show This is Now.

Inside you will find details of some of our shows from our Autumn/Winter 2010 Season, with details of the learning resources on offer. If you would like extra copies of BelgradeED it is available to download from the download section of our website www.belgrade.co.uk
