Foreword to the Second Edition

A question frequently by readers of journals and magazines must be “Now where on earth did I see ?”. As I am well aware from experience, the query may be answered, or may not be. This index is an attempt to remedy this situation as far as BELGAPOST is concerned. Vol 1 No1 of BELGAPOST was issued in 1988 and is now in its 23rd volume. The decision to publish a new index now rather than after each dozen or even ten issues is an arbitrary one, and it was felt as the Index is available electronically and on the BSC website, that there was nothing to be gained in waiting. The Index is kept up-to-date issue by issue, and electronic updates are available on request. It will be noted that BELGAPOST has had very few editors in the nearly quarter of a century since the first issue. This edition is a tribute to the past and current editors, who put many hours of their time into each issue, sometimes with insufficient material, sometimes having to make the decision to delay the inclusion of an item. Largely un-noticed will be the contributions of these editors in terms of material which is “unattributed”, often included as a filler or comment. Many articles were penned by our late Founder and Past-President S Jack Andrews during his editorship of BELGAPOST, and not specifically attributed to him. I have only attributed articles to him under his name when he claimed authorship by adding his own name. Readers will appreciate his prolific writings formed the core of the issues during his editorship. It should also be said that other editors wrote articles without claiming authorship. As with the first edition, the Index is in three parts: Part 1 (pages 1-3) lists items about the Circle, its activities, members and associates; Part 2 lists articles by topic (pages 4-20); Part 3 (pages 21-28) lists articles by author. Sources show volume number and page thus: 4/20 (Volume 4 Page 20) except volume 5 which also shows the issue number thus: 5/2/1 (Volume 5 Number 2 Page 1). There are two Appendices: first, a list of the early BSC Records – research papers written by the founding members; second, a list of contents of the BSC booklet published in 2007 on the occasion of our second display to the Royal Philatelic Society to mark our 50th year. This edition includes entries for displays given at BSC meetings, and in addition brief details of the contents of letters have been given. It was felt that little snippets of information can frequently be lost in write-ups of displays, and that these entries will enable members to track down information on their pet subjects more easily (see in Part 2 “Displays at Meetings”. Due to the difficulty with carrying out a “word search” when words with accents are involved, accents have intentionally been omitted from this index, with apologies to French speakers. Full editions of past volumes (and some individual numbers) are still available. Please contact the Treasurer or the Librarian. Any comments as to ease or difficulty of use of this index or suggestions for improvement will be gratefully received.
