First  launched  with  a  pilot  effort  in  2009,  Beijing  Design  Week  has  quickly  become  

A  new  BJDW  debuted  in  2011  as  a  citywide  showcase,  catalyst  and  laboratory  for  raising  public  design  awareness,  while  helping  to  develop  a  stronger  design  infrastructure  and  discourse  in  Beijing,  and  China.

BJDW  is  an  initiative  of  the  Ministry  of  Education  of  the  PRC,  the  Ministry  of  Culture  of  the  PRC,  the  China  Federation  of  Literary  and  Art  Circles,  and  the  Municipal  Government  of  Beijing.

Running  from  26  September  to  3  October  (preview  days:  24  &  25  September),  Beijing  Design  Week  2011  was  a  major  success.  It  comprised  and  attracted  more  than:

60 exhibitions,  installations  and  pop-­up  shops

40 talks,  lectures  and  workshops

100  partner  events

1800 participants  from  25 countries

200

900  unique  media  reports,  and  300,000  web  impressions.  

3.5  million  visitors

Opening  Ceremony:BJDW  2011  opened  on  26  September  with  a  gala  ceremony,  presided  over  by  GuoJinlong,  Mayor  of  Beijing,  at  the  China  Millennium  Monument.

Design  Triennial:In  2011,  BJDW  was  mounted  in  partnership  with  the  First  Beijing  International  Design  Triennial,  organized  by  Tsinghua University,  at  the  National  Museum  of  China  on  Tiananmen  Square.

Guest  City:  LondonLondon  was  the  official  Guest  City  of  BJDW  2011.  

The  program  included  a  delegation  headed  by  Lord  Marland,  Parliamentary  Under-­Secretary  of  State,  and  was  highlighted  by  Manuscript,  a  largescale installation  by  designer  Paul  Cocksedge.

Milan  will  be  the  Guest  City  of  BJDW  2012.

Beijing  Design  Forum:The  one-­day  Beijing  Design  Forum  was  held  on  28  September  at  the  Great  Hall  of  the  People,  with  leading  dignitaries  and  luminaries  in  attendance,  including  Mayor  GuoJinlong.

BJDW  2011  was  a  citywide  event,  encompassing  dozens  of  venues  across  Beijing.

However,  two  primary  zones  were  established  at:

751  D PARK,  a  former  gas  plant  adjacent  the  798  Art  Zone

Dashilar,  an  historic  hutong neighborhood  by  Tiananmen  Square
