My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?

Jesus echoes this psalm of David (22) as both a proclamation of his suffering and an acclamation ofGod's fidelity. We all suffer feelings of abandonment at times during our lives. Jesus felt it more. He suffered it inorder to rescue us in times of such pain and vulnerability. It is easy to move from abandonment to self-reliance,anger, or worse. Jesus knows the feeling. And yet the psalm goes on to proclaim the goodness of God, "Yet thou art holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel." (v.3) Godis faithful to those who call upon him, especially those who suffer unjust oppression. Jesus had reason for confidence in God's promis-es that he would not see corruption. He had shared with his disciples that he would rise again on the third day. Jesus, even while hesuffered the depths of agonizing feelings of abandonment, trusted in the Father of all. I say "feelings" of abandonment because God never abandoned Jesus. One could say, that with Jesus' permission, his hu-manity was given over to the cruel death on the cross. But un-glorified flesh is temporary. Heaven awaited him. His body would be glori-fied. He wills the same for us. He desires our bodies, along with our souls, would be glorified in heaven. In the meantime, he shares hisown glorified body through the Eucharist. We celebrate its institution on Holy Thursday. The Institution of the Holy Eucharist begins Jesus descent into the depths of human suffering, even as he totally associatesHimself with us, body and soul. Can you feel his Passion in your members? Let us walk with him on this Via Dolorosa. We will haveseveral opportunities for that during the Holy Triduum. Please see our Holy Week schedule for all the events of Jesus' life, death, and res-urrection. May you be blessed with a deeper union with Him.

From the FathersAccording to Jesus, the Word of God, by the Holy Spirit the bread is his body and the wine is his blood (John of Damascus). The givingof Christ's body with the bread is just as real as the giving of his body into death on the cross. Instead of eating the meat from a lambas in the Passover, we now eat the Word of the Father. The lintels of our heart are smeared with the blood of the new covenant (Atha-nasius). By eating his body and drinking his blood, we have life in us. The communal meal of Christ’s body and blood in this life-givingEucharist of bread and wine is Jesus' new Passover that we now receive in faith as a divine mystery (Cyril of Alexandria). (From An-cient Christian Commentary of Scripture, Luke)
