Congratulations are in order for Assistant Chief Deputy Patrick Bonner and Assis-tant Chief Earnestine Sanders.
Dallas County Commissioners formally recognized the promotion of the two new assistant chiefs at the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department during their meeting on June 3, 2014. Sheriff Lupe Valdez said “These new chiefs have an abundance of institutional knowledge to help lead our department in this next chapter. They are the right candidates for their new respective roles.”
Our executive staff objectives are in action. This spring, the executive staff gath-
ered to draft innovative objectives for the department. This summer, we’ve taken
it to a new level by teaming up with the Dallas Police Department to host our first
Joint Command Retreat.
These type of leadership retreats serve as a refresher and constant reminder that
we must continuously seek ways to improve procedures in place. It is also a
place for common ground to learn from each other and come up with better solu-
tions to serve the community..

The 6th Annual Fallen Deputies Memorial Ceremony was held at Founders Plaza on May 16, 2014 to honor the sheriff’s deputies killed in the line of duty. The monument which stands forever as a tribute to those who gave their life in defense of others was first unveiled on May 15, 2009.

The first joint command retreat between the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department and the Dallas Police Depart-ment took place on June 5th and 6th, 2014. Some of the topics of discussion included at assessment of each department’s visions and goals, an evaluation of leadership styles, as well as a refresher course on mentoring and reverse mentoring. The retreat also included a presentation on community active shooter preparedness, led by Dr. Alexander East-man, who serves as part of the Dallas Police Department’s tactical response squad. James Capra, with the Drug Enforcement Administration also presented as well as a duo from Zale’s Jewelers corporate team who addressed leadership development. The training has potential for growth in the future.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department took part in the 13th annual Click It or Ticket campaign led by TxDOT. The campaign ran from May 19 to June 1. Motorists found not wearing a seat-belt faced fines and court costs of up to $200.
The 13-day campaign costs an estimated $1.5 million, which comes out of TxDOT and other federal funding.
The program began in 2002 when statistics showed that only 75 percent of Texans wore seat-belts. That num-ber has gone up to 90 percent. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics, in 2012, there were 10,335 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants who died.

Detention Service Officer Donald Lynch serves as a Medical Assessment
Program Officer. He is a dedicated employee who currently serves in Kays
Tower. He puts his heart into his work and is always willing to help get the
job done. You can tell he enjoys his work and his motivation is contagious.

Hospital staff for their quick
thinking to assist during a re-
cent altercation.
Six Parkland Hospital staff members were recently honored for assisting during an altercation involving a jail
inmate. On May 21, 2014, at approximately 1:30 p.m. a detention service officer was escorting an inmate to
Parkland Hospital for a routine appointment. During the visit, the officer removed restraints from the inmate for
a medical procedure. Once the medical procedure was completed, all medical staff left the room and the officer
attempted to place restraints back on the inmate.
At the time, the inmate turned around and struck the officer in the face with a closed fist. The inmate continued
to hit the officer, which caused her to fall to the ground. When she fell, she grabbed the inmate and pulled him
to the ground and yelled for help.
Parkland’s Marie Burns, RNII, heard the commotion. She responded and grabbed the inmate around the neck
and pulled him off the officer and to the ground. She held him until the Parkland Police Officers arrived.
While this was happening, Jerrica Robinson, LVNI, came to assist the other nurse and sat on the inmate so he
could stay down. Jeremy Tomsic, Trauma Nurse Clinician II for Neurology, also assisted in restraining the in-
mate and put his knees on the inmate’s back. Monica Jackson, AUM, focused on the officer and got her out of
harms way and assisted with getting medical treatment.
While the other nurses restrained the inmate, Eva Lopez, CSA, ran for help out of the clinic back door after she
pushed the 9-1-1 panic button and Diana Ramirez, Sr. CSA, ran for help through the front door, and assisted in
ensuring other patients the situation was under control.
Without the quick selfless reaction of these Parkland staff members, this officer could have been seriously in-
jured and the inmate could have attempted an escape.

Annual DFW Dragon Boat Festival held at Lake Carolyn in
Irving on May 18, 2014. The event is sponsored by the
Marco Polo World Foundation.
Sheriff Lupe Valdez presented a scholarship to Emma L. Wim-berg, daughter of Coppell Police Department Corporal James Chet Wimberg. The award comes from the Sheriff’s Association of Texas. You can learn more about the scholarship program by logging on to www.txsheriffs.org.

Thanks to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, District Attorney Craig Watkins, Sheriff Lupe Valdez, and Park-
land Hospital, Dallas County will be participating in the Corporate Challenge this year. The annual challenge
takes place during the months of August, September, and October in the Richardson area. It is designed to
promote fitness, wellness, and improved morale; and to raise funds for the Special Olympics of Texas. Employ-
