The Dallas Sheriff’s Department took part in the 27th Annual Elite News Martin

Luther King, Jr. Day Parade on Jan. 21, 2013. With more than 250,000-plus spec-

tators annually, this parade ranks as one of the top five celebrations in the coun-

try. Proceeds from the annual event provide scholarships to local high school sen-

iors in their pursuit of a higher education. This year, the 1.5 mile parade route be-

gan at the corner of M.L.K. Boulevard and Lamar Street and proceeded to Fair

Park where an all-day festival took place.

As the final touches for the first Bridge to the Communities: Recognition Banquet

are put in order, I’d like to challenge each departmental section/division to show

off your artistic talents. This formal event, which is designed to recognize the hard

work of so many of your peers, promises to be epic. Expect the unusual. The chal-

lenge? Round up some of your most talented co-workers and video record a three

to four minute skit, dance, commercial-type script to air during the awards ceremo-

ny. In turn, the executive staff and I will start practicing our own little number. But

hurry! Don’t waste time. March 15th is right around the corner and we only have

about 8 video slots for you to sign up and show us what you’ve got. Register your

team with Chief Wilson. Good luck!

Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville during the January movie premiere stop in Dallas.

Hollywood stars paid Dallas, TX, a visit during a recent film premiere tour featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger’s return to the big screen in his latest film “The Last Stand.” The film marketing team expressed interest in wanting to pay tribute to our law enforcement officers for one night by treating them to a free movie, followed by a reception at a nearby venue.

“Bridge to the Communities” Upcoming Fundraiser

If you missed the fun at the January event, here is your second chance! Come enjoy a nice evening mixer with dinner included in a private room setting with a DJ.

The Sheriff’s Bridge to the Com-munities Banquet Planning Commit-tee would like to thank the generosity of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Associ-ation, the Latino Peace Officers As-sociation, and the Fraternal Order of Police chapters. Your associations’ donations will help make the March 15, 2013 banquet a memorable night for all the deserving employees at the Dallas Sheriff’s Department. Many thanks!

DSO Adam Nguyen, who works Third Watch-Intake was recently recognized with a certificate of merit by the Dallas Police Depart-ment for his exemplary conduct and excellence in law enforcement performance. Congratulations, sir!

Pioneer Art Jail Program Recognition

These El Centro Art instructors were recognized at an El Centro Col-lege awards ceremony on January 16, 2013. The duo received a nomination for The Teaching Excellence Award for the Mental Health Art Program for The Dallas Sheriff's Department.

Sandra Lara and Janet Love pioneered the Jail Education Art/Mental Health Art Program. The instructors use innovative teaching ap-proaches to reach a rare and high risk student population. Sandra was one of the first art instructors to begin teaching for the art pro-gram three years ago. Janet joined the Jail Education Program a year ago, and began co-teaching the Mental Health Art students with San-

dra. Instructors interface with Parkland Psychiatric Team concerning the welfare of the students. Parkland praises the instructors for their work and their contribution towards the betterment of the inmates’ mental health.

This duo has proved to strive for their students’ excellence despite the untraditional classroom environ-ment. Within the past twelve months ,there have been six article publications highlighting the results of the high caliber teaching efforts of Sandra and Janet.

Lt. Matt Perry officially retired Jan. 31, 2013. Many friends and colleagues gathered to reflect on his extensive career with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department. Several of them talked about his incredible leadership skills as well as his role as a mentor for many rookies throughout the years. Lt. Per-ry’s immediate plans are to simply take time to relax.

Happy trails, Lt. Perry!
